  • First-class act Johnny Boy!

  • Ref was a fool, he did not know who he is dealing with, and it cost him huge, Like his Job

  • Classy stuff by McEnroe. Terrible Umpiring

  • @TNO73 Only Peter Fleming ever cheered for McEnroe

  • @TNO73 Connors always had the crowd on his side, especially in New York. Only Peter Fleminf

  • @thankyouverymuchman We just need Basil to smack this guy in the head.

  • why is bob odenkirk refereeing a tennis match?

  • The idea of the video is that the ball is like 5cm whitin the line and the judges say out...Who can blame Bjoern?

  • Love Borg staring down the ref like Clint Eastwood, then McEnroe makes a fool of the ref. Awesome.

  • Even though at the time McEnroe was nicknmed Super brat for a reason, but such was his respect for Borg that he did what I don't think I have seen anyone do in ANY sport.

  • didn't like the way the umpire handled borg.

  • what tournament is this ? the january tournaments are normally in australia , wtf maddison square garden !

  • @90alexcatalan This was actually the season-ending championship, now known as the ATP World Tour Finals. It was simply called the Masters back then. From 1978 to 1985 it was played in January, then went back to November/December. Madison Square Garden hosted it from '78 to '89.

  • Love it. Borg is standing there like a knob, waiting for an airline ticket. Dickhead

  • what a prick of a umpire. he's just sitting there ignoring Borg while Borg is trying to talk to him

  • Really Generous and correct actually from McEnroe, giving Borg the point

  • @Coolboy25

    when did he do that?

  • This is why I love McEnroe. He was a bad-tempered SOB but he was never petty and had HUGE respect for Borg. His temper came from his competitive attitude and that was it. He would never take an unfair advantage.

  • @cschnei08

    are you kidding me?

he knew when to use his bad temperament to his advantage... have you ever READ winning ugly?

here's proof: you don't see him blowing his mind when he's up... there's only one exception to that. he does blow up when he's about to lose a lead.

not to get an unfair advantage? funniest thing i've heard the whole day.

you're right in that he had huge respect for borg, but not (m)any others. "I'll drop my pants if Chang wins Wimbledon" ?

  • @musiccritic10 Dude you're making my point for me. McEnroe flipped when he was behind in order to psych himself up and get his edge back. And please, that Chang shit was hilarious.

  • @cschnei08

which, by definition, being disrespectful and disturbing the opponent's concentration... that's not an unfair advantage? any other player would have a point penalty for what he did. of course it's unfair! unsportsmanlike conduct would have been called on any other person, but mcenroe used his prestige like that.

yeah, funny maybe, but still disrespectful. there were so many other times that weren't "funny" but were still disrespectful.

  • poor umpire.. looks like the monopoly guy

  • you all okay with borg's backhand motion?

  • @dimpoochie yes. why wouldn't you be ok with it?

  • @cain2335 no offence. it just looks unusual to me.

  • nazi umpire

  • The chair umpire was probably freaked out about having to do a McEnroe match, but relieved that he knew he wouldn't have any problems from Borg. He's probably sitting there thinking, "Why is this guy Borg arguing with me? Oh well, I'll just threaten to deduct a point and tell him to go play' that will put an end to it."

  • You know I remember these little wood tennis raquets, its ridiculous how difficult it was to hit the ball consisitently hard with those little wood raquets. I played #1 Varsity tennis in So Cal back around 79 and I can tell you the change over to wide body space age composite material larger tennis raquets sure did add a hell of alot more power and control to the game, try one of these old vintage wood raquets out on the court sometime and see for your self, you will be enlightened.

  • the women are better than this these days

  • @jasonlevin8 You clearly don't know shit

  • @jasonlevin8 Give the women these days a wooden racket and let's see if they manage to win a point against Bjorn and Mac.

  • @jasonlevin8 lol yeh right. mcenroe can still beat pro level mens players and he does so still as shown vs recently retired pro players or in the WTT where he does consistently beat PRO level mens players in singles and doubles.

Also consider at wimbledon recently murray lambasted the womens player by placing serena in outside the top 1000s if she was to play mens tennis while mcenroe said she would be outside of the 600s. Based on mc's recent performance, id say hes in the top 100-200

  • @gabe228

also, you have to consider that big Mac is pushin 50+.....

    mad respect.

i go as far to say that Mac could maintain a ranking WITHIN the top 100.

    ; -)

  • Wow. I'd read about this the next day in Newsday and never forgot about it. Very cool to see it all these years later. McEnroe, knowing Borg had been shortchanged a second time, said, "he's the last person in the world I want to give a point to. But that serve was good." He couldn't believe it, Borg protesting a point at length!

  • When watching this you notice how slow tennis was back then. Two of the best players in the world at the time.

  • @loch70

What a comment, I would like to see you play them, unreal

  • @leverwork1 Thats not what i ment. =) I mean if they would play now they probobly be top 10! The material is much better today. Therefore the game is much faster now. =)

  • @loch70

    Okay

  • @loch70 Borg got slaughtered in 1993 when he tried to come back, and McEnroe began deteriorating in 1991.

When they play exhibition matches McEnroe seems to have Borg's number pretty good.

  • The guy won 60 matches in 8 years, still has a 89% winning average in major events that has not been matched, he played the Australia once in 74. LOL

  • altoguh protesting, borg was a gentleman.....

  • typical stalwart british umpires

  • Resistance is futile.

  • you really gotta admire borgs character...

  • @podge325

seriously....im sure not even federer can keep his cool in this situation :P

  • @wildboyz322 Lol yeah but borg is even calmer than federer

yea hard to believe someone could be calmer than fed but yeah

  • That's about as pissed as I have ever seen the Ice Man-Borg! He was cheated and he was steaming INSIDE but you'd never know it by looking at his face and body language. If that had been Mac or Conners, you'd have seen the top of their heads blow off! But I agree with those who feel tennis has lost it's golden touch over the years because of the SUPER-IMPROVED racquets. It's now a WAM-BAM Thank you man, manner of playing today. The old timers really had to think 2-3 shots ahead to win a point.

  • What a silly thing to say.

Is exactly because the racquets are better that the players got much harder physical training, must think twice before hitting a ball to not allow his opponent to hit a winner.

Silly thing not to recognize the talent and hard work today's tennis players put on their lives.

  • I don't dispute that the players of today are great. They are. But, I simply liked the game MUCH more when players had to work their way into winning a point. They had to think several shots ahead. Now days, the only person making Fed play some tennis is Nadel. Fed basically whacks everyone else into submission with a fast serve and a mean shot from either side. He deserves his wins but like MANY, I just miss the game the way it was played in before big rackets. NOTHING SILLY ABOUT THAT. SILLY U

  • stupidump

  • Borg has a good temper. I would have been pissed of at the chair....

btw: I love the way borg looks at im at 2.22

  • I know this is not very important, but has anybody noticed that nowadays you can hardly hear the famous phrase: "Quiet, please!" anymore? I guess the reason for this is that this phrase is widely regarded as very antiquated today. And they also want the people to cheer and be enthusiastic as long as they are fair. Just 15 or 20 years ago the spectators could make one "beep" and you could bet you would hear a "Quiet, please" from the umpire. Especially in Wimbledon...

  • This is great. How I miss the way tennis was. Back then it seemed much more about placement than power. Did you notice that there was no Gawd awful gruntin & groaning with every shot. You can tell that both Brog & McEnroe respected each other as I can't see what Mac did throwing away a point happening to often today. Oh & for the record I think Bjorn was right to argue as I think both balls were good.

  • umm I think you're talking about women's tennis mostly

  • Borg is the Silver Fox of Tennis

  • You mean nowadays he's the Silver Fox? He was blond in the early days. ...Mac wrote in his book from a few years ago (GREAT READ!) that when Borg started playing the Master's tour approx. the past 10 years or so, that Borg couldn't hit the ball if his life depended on it. Saying that many times the other palyers had to give Borg a set to keep it interesting for the exhibition crowds.

  • 11 majors in 7 years

  • I'm not questioning Borg's record or his abilities in the past. I have NOT seen him play since '83. But Mac wrote he can no longer thread a needle with his passing shots NOW! Today! Perhaps he's gotten better since Mac wrote that??? But Borg was a special kind of player. Mac also said that Bjorn was the most athletic tennis player he ever played and John's played many of the greats...

  • @goofydog2

    Well said!

  • Borg never lost his cool. This umpire must have been a real "tool"; a mere "mediocryte" wanting to be heard on a big stage for once in his life. I always find it humurous when the "mediocytes" want to get in on the limelight, and since they can't do it with talent, they force their way into this kind of situation. LOL. I'm surrounded by these "mediocrytes" on a daily basis, and I tell you what, it gets taxing on the spirit. They're like "spiritual vampires".

  • @theatlantean1 I know that you posted Ur comment some months ago but I'd like to ask you how many grand slams you have won and what number you consider a player should win before you consider them to be great

Borg was and remains one of the greatest players ever, hi talent speaks for itself

tell me you just posted this comment to get reactions

  • @anthonynewsome I was referring to the Chair Umpire, not Borg. Go back and Re-Read what I wrote. What I was pointing out is that the "mediocrytes" (chair umpire in this situation) like to show what little power they have to the true great ones' (Borg in this situation). And yes, I completely agree with you in that Borg is one of the greatest players to ever lace em' up. Had he not retired by the time he was 26, he probably would have won 15-20 slams. He's the champion I look up to the most.

  • I've played both those raquets: the Donnay Borg Pro with extra long leather grip. An awesome raquet that was a wood/composite combination.

And I currently have the raquet McEnroe was playing, the Wilson Staff Jack Kramer Autograph (actually autographed by Jack Kramer !), strung to 65.

I don't play much anymore, but when I do people freak when I beat them with a wooden raquet !

  • Was that the end of the game? If so, it's funny how neither of them shook the umpire's hand :)

  • hahah wow, I guess Mac didn't like him either, what a kick in the pants

  • borg was da only person mcenroe respected.

  • Well, Umpires arent always right, and some of them at wimbeldon were really pathetic... Sometimes pros have the right to dispute a call like Borg did here... But some of the Mac outbursts and recently Serena is just really unacceptable. If Serena would have kept her cool she would have gotten away with it and the foot fault may have been reversed by the chair umpire. Too bad. They will be held accountable for there actions. Brian Earley is a class act ( Tourney Director)

  • wow...that is actually awesome

  • Mac is like, "see how the other half lives, Borg?". Once in a blue moon, his opponents spoke up, and Johnny knew EXACTLY what they meant!

  • life isnt fair get over it borg

  • Look at Borg's tongue on 2:31:). Clouseau's in danger of being dragged right off of that chair lol lol lol

  • Borg didn't lose his cool at all. He strongly challenged the decision, but he didn't raise his voice, name call or speak disrespectfully. McEnroe conceded the point in the only way that he could. He loved Borg. He admitted it later in his book "You Cannot Be Serious". He knew Borg had been treated unfairly, he also knew how it felt to be in the position that Borg was in at this point. He respected Borg and done the only thing that he could to put matters right.

  • This is the first time I have seen Bjorn argue with an umpire, he's usually so stoic and calm.

  • @wouldntyoulike2know i think he still was even arguing to the umpire here, didnt really blow up majorly was more stubborn and refusing to back down, having said that after the point deduction it looked like he was going to smash the umpire didnt it lol.

  • he means red hair with ginger

  • so in...

  • That was in.

  • Mac deliberately hit the ball in the stands on Borg's 2nd serve due to the umps 2nd bonehead call. Incredible stuff on this vid.

  • i hope its just the age of the film that is making everyone look severely ginger

  • Ginger? What does that mean?

  • Hi, what do you mean "severely ginger"?

    Thanks.

  • People with red hair are called "gingers" and they have no souls.

  • It is, Borg's hair was very blond, nowadays it's grey.

  • What did McEnroe do that was extraordinary?

  • Check Wikipedia u dumbass... U will know why he is considered to be on e of the greatest ever... The mere fact that he was able to beat Borg in Wimby finals speaks volumes of his credentials

  • No! I mean what did he do in this video that the OP called "extraordinary"? I know he was a really good player!

  • He gave away a point because he knew that Borg had hit an ace and the umpire made a wrong judgement

  • I love the end when neither of them shakes hands with the ref:D

  • @DjProdKK Truly awesome. Both guys respected each other and in a show of being on the same page they both just looked the other way when passing the ump.

  • The most coward umpire I've ever seen in my life

  • to give in to McEnroe's rage so easily and call a ball out when it was clearly in is sheer cowardice. Borg was right to complain. I totally agree with him.

  • I kind of understand why Mac goes berserk now.

If you bottle up that anger with the umpire, it will just mess up your game entirely. Better to vent it all out and look ugly than loose

  • Actually, psychologists have proven that letting the anger out only solidifies an angry attitude, which is why when McEnroe stayed calm, it helped him win the '81 Wimbledon final, but when he let it out in the '82 final, it hurt him and cost him the match.

  • Comment removed

  • Everyone is different. Bjorn Borg had a different game and his demeanor lead to 5 straight Wimbledons and 6 Straight French Open titles. John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg won with different personalities.

So to say you have to be one way or the other is wrong. You have to be who you are.

  • Jimasian; Borg had six french open total but four straight 78-81!

  • sorry i don´t understand english very well

can anyone tell me what happen exactly?

    thank you

  • It's actually not in English, but another language. Borg protested the chair ump's overrule of a shot of his that he thought was a winner, so Borg argued until the ump gave McEnroe three points, putting Mac only one point away from the set. Mac won the set, but Borg took the next set to win.

  • great stuff. legends

  • good no one shook that deuchebag's hand he deserved it

  • This was a shocking moment for all us Borg fans! Our hero... protesting an umpire decision against him? At that time I couldn't believe it. Looking back at this footage again I think that Borg isn't used to protesting against the ref. You can see him repeating the same lines every time he opens his mouth. And did McEnroe really give away that point? I'm not sure about that...

  • I loved this match. This whole tournament was wild. I remember Lendl tanking in the last round robin match vs connors so he could face Gene Mayer instead of Borg. Then Connors vs Borg was a great match, with Borg winning. Mac lost all 3 of his RR matches.

  • Noone shook hand with the ugly clown-empire ! "Take this, loser !"

  • This is a great moment in tennis. I can watch it over and over again.

  • One can tell how close these guys were..

just look at that warm hug a la nadal and fed...

  • i notice neither one shook the umpire's hand at the end i guess they were both disgusted with him,but what mccenroe did was no big deal if he had done that at 3 all in the second set tiebreak then it would have been a big deal cause it looks like the umpire gave that second set to mccenroe with that one bad call and then giving john 3 more points from delay of game.

  • im sure borg would do the same right? very rare to see a tennis player do this.

  • Jesus what a freaking dumbass jerk of an empire. Maybe he was so bitchy because he was jealous of Borg's beautiful head full of blonde hair, LOL.

  • Fantastic video. Thanks for posting.

  • rofl at the end neither of the players did shake hands with the umpire :D

  • i'm 24 and i know a lot about the history of tennis. don't make me laugh. BTW is that a wood cane or a metal one?

  • amazing. Never thought Borg had the ability to lose his cool on the court. Probably this was the time and beginning of the burnout that contributed to his early retirement.

  • nice vid. thx for posting.

  • I watched the whole video and have no idea what point Mac gave away, but nevermind. MacEnroe is a cool guy these days, I never saw much of him in action back in the days.

  • After the ace that was called out from Bjorn, he hits a backhand a mile into the crowd, on purpose, to award Bjorn the point.

  • despite what happened in the game it was still a bit classless to walk straight past the ump without shaking hands

  • NO it wasn't. The ump was a complete jerk and deserved it.

  • Mac gives away -1- point for Borg's ace serve that was wrongly called out.

But in the prior tie break he benefits from a bad call (that he SAW in) plus the 3 penalty points delay of game against Borg that followed on from that.

If he was such a good sport he should have hit at least -3- more balls out, maybe 4, in the tie break.

Get's a standing ovation for being a gentleman 20% of the time ... hah, that's Americans for you.

  • its not johns fault the ump is an idiot

  • that is so true

  • Yeah, and when did Borg EVER hit anything out when he saw the line judges make bad calls on Mac? I think its less than once.

  • wow, that was so nice of McEnroe!

  • And what's that strange material the rackets are made of. It almost looks like...wood.

  • yes, wood racquets....the way the sport was intended to be played...now its just a mindless bashfest...no wonder players have such short careers...or when theyre done...their bodies have had it..... way too much power...it took the craft out of the game when these "make even a hack look good" racquets took over..

  • actually that's a bunch of old-timer crap, sorry you can't see that. even mcenroe himself would acknowledge that the times have changed and the players are (technique-wise) better now than they were in johns's era. Not taking anything away from john or bjorn, they are both absolute legends and nothing federer or anybody else does can erase that. And never let it be said that John McEnroe was a poor sport- the guy was cruel but undeniably fair, as showed here

  • well considering youre probably 12 and know nothing about the history of the sport, ill overlook your old timer crap remark....the sport was intended to be played "under the sign of wood" so that a ball could only be hit as hard as a human body could propel it. the only technique thats changed is that everyone bashes the ball with heavy topspin to keep it in play...and McEnroe was one of the players leading the charge to change back to wood....now let me get my cane and beat you over the head..

  • How did wood keep people from hitting it "only as hard as a human body could propel it" as opposed to the rackets we have now? (rhetorical question, btw)

  • if you ever hit with a wood racquet youd understand what im saying.... even total hacks can hit the ball really hard with the new frames....it took real precision to hit with wood....which chris evert did with unbelievable accuracy over and over.....i doubt the williams girls would have ever reached the top with wood..

  • I suppose the tour de' france should be raced using penny farthings, and the olympics should be in the nude.... your point is absolutely ridiculous. Technological advancement is inevitable, the sport must simply move with it, and adapt to it, e.g. longer golf fairways, which is already occurring .

  • if i wanted your opinion, id beat it out of you...lol..... the game sucks now...end of story...

  • OK buddy, you know what would be good to get that aggression out.... a good long jog, ohh NO put down those runners, not allowed, just bare feet and a loin clothe, remember we have to keep it pure!!

  • lmao, that was GOOD.....as hannibal lector said to clarice...... the good thing about wood racquets was that , not only did you have to be more precise( lets face it, go to a park and see how much better hacks are today with these clubs) but since the points were slower, it involved much more mental strategy...you had to stay focused and not choke...how many players do you see choke today? there isnt time with the brainless bashing that goes on.....the mental aspect of the game was taken out .

  • you know im only kidding with you , dont you....? although , if the swimmers were nude, we wouldnt have had all the brouhaha about the suits they said were cheating.....it would have come down to how big phelps balls were....literally.....lol.....

  • Hardly ridiculous. It is FACT that it is harder, MUCH harder to hit a clean shot with a standard frame wood racquet than with the new technology. Now, there's no excuse to hit the frame. That knowledge should lend to the appreciation of the players in this video and the AMAZING shots they hit in spite of the limitations and comparative handicap of their equipment.

  • JJ, you shouldn't reply to such an old comment. I was arguing against chrisrei's point that apparently the sport had been destroyed by tech innovation. I would agree that it is harder to play with older equipment, that much is obvious. I also think that today's players deserve equal respect regardless of what equipment they use. The sport is no worse due to tech innovation, in fact I think it is better. There may be a time in the future when standardization is needed but this has not yet come.

  • so lets get a hack to play against federer or nadal. ya im sure thats going to go real well.

  • Excellent point. It's WAY easier teaching beginners now than before. (Almost impossible with some before!) Your point can be tested TODAY. Supply a top player with a wood racquet - and see how well they play! =)

  • an experiment was done with players in the top 100.....they didnt fare too well with the wood frames.....they couldnt put the ball away after the first shot and got frustrated faster......so , the new frames dont allow for much time to choke, which was the point i was making....the mental side is easier now because theyre reacting to the speed of the game and its more instinctive.....youre gonna still have some classic matches like nadal/federer... but most are just bam bam bam...

  • Interesting. Gael Monfils couldn't get away with half the winners he makes off his FH using wood. Though it's a different game now, I'm surprised players are taking much fuller strokes lately (larger backswings) and mixing shots more. The larger players today move amazingly well too. It woud be fun if they had a 'vintage racquet' tournaments once in a while.

  • the one area where players are undoubtedly better today than earlier is in their fitness level...theres no denying that....credit martina navratilova for that though......

  • Must be true. I entered a serving contest - hit 119mph - fine, a little soft but respectable I thought. Later I found out Venus Williams hit 120mph !! So much for my manhood. Training is even more crucial as you get older - thank you Martina!

  • i remember tracy austin serving at less than 70 mph and still winning 2 us opens......i thought that was a low speed serve til i saw dementieva hit one that went 49 mph....... ....but she pounds the groundstrokes...

  • IGNORANT

  • ALL CAPS

  • Couldn't say it better

  • I was unaware there was a "Monty Python School of Tennis Umpires."

  • it's not so strange if one person refuses to shake the ump's hand, but this is very weird...it's almost like they had some kind of psychic connection at the net, silently agreeing to not shake his hand

  • from this clip I couldn't see Borg's reaction -- did he thank Mac? I also wonder if this unnerved Borg in that game -- it could have messed with his head.

  • this is what sport is all about. even though they're eachothers nemesis, there is still honor to it. great.

  • Lol! I love how both Borg and Mac ignored the ref after the match. I've never seen that in my life. For Borg to complain must have been a big deal because he always played it cool and never showed emotion.

  • I remember the early Connors/McEnroe battles. Just spectacular! And when they played for the american Davis Cup team they had Arthur Ashe as a captain for a while, whom Connors particular didn't like.

  • Didn't like? Connors sued Ashe (directly or indirectly) several times.

  • This was a very nice thing of Mac to do for Borg, but it begs the question, would Borg have done the same for Mac?

  • Was the point that Mac gave away the one where he hit Borg's second serve out? Did he try to hit the ump?

  • That was it, but he wasn't trying to hit the ump, just to hit it out.

  • Haha.. everybody hates the umpire :D !

  • Borg should of challenged those calls.

  • they didn't have challenges back then, doofus. Honestly. Don't comment until you know what you're talking about. Why do you think Mcenroe argued about? bad calls. If they had had challenged, there would have been much less arguing. duh.

  • You retard. Its called a fucking joke, sarcasm....derp. Do you know humour? Do you? Really? Are you sure? Jokes? Make people laugh? No? "Errrr you idiot IricForset dey didnt have line calls back then, DEERRRRRRRR!!! You IIIDDIOTT!!! DERRRRR!!!!!!" Fuck me, testament to the fact that YouTube is full of retatds.

  • yes, real mature. And you're how old? 20? grow up. your a failure at life and you will never get anywhere, speaking like that. grow up.

  • Coming from someone who couldnt even understand basic humour. Yes I do know they only brought the challenge system in 2006, Im not a moron. Why do people attribute the sum of ones life to success? You couldnt handle the fact I rebuttled, the end.

  • Listen, I'm sorry, Did I understand it was humor? No. You know why? because there are countless morons on youtube, many of whom have made dumber mistakes than you have. My apologies.

  • thats alright. Im sorry for getting upset.

  • Zeb is right, Mcenroe rarely, if ever, acted up when he played Borg. If you look at Borg while he's confronting the ump, it looks like it's taking all he's got from whacking the guy.

  • McEnroe DID idolize Borg; he said it today during the first few minutes of commentating The French Open. Somehow, I had forgotten about the call controversy in this match. I cannot ever remember seeing Borg argue a call, albeit gentlemanly, to that extent. Thanks for posting this!

  • McEnroe wouldn't have done that for any other sport. He practically idolized Borg.

I'm not surprised 19,000 people showed up to watch this. This was in the heyday of tennis when the Borg-McEnroe-Connors rivalries were going strong. Tennis was huge

  • So who won there? bad picture cant tell.. neither reacted

  • mcenroe's always been a fair player....people have this weird misconception that he was a bad sport, when really he was just pissed off at himself/the bad line judges.

  • I know I hate when people misjudge Johnny Mac, he was always quite far and respectful and he was HIGHLY respectful to Borg, he still talks so nicely about him today. Mac was a great tennis player, forget the blowups and everything, he could really play tennis. This era with Mcenroe versus Borg was some of the greatest ever. I loved what Mac did in this video and how neither of them shoke the umpire's hand, the umpire was a jerk and an idiot.

  • this goes to show just how much respect mac had for bjorn.

and people say mac had no sportsmanship...

  • Calling ball out at the baseline from the chair risky business. Some might even call it inept. Both Borg and McEenroe knew the ball was good. It's a good thing this umpire did not chair a Wimbledon or U.S. Open final.

  • No handshake for the umpire. Lol! They just ignored him.

  • haha, thats the first time ive ever seen that!

  • even when he argues he was so cool. Come on borg punch him

  • OK WHO PISSED OFF THE COOL GUY LOL

  • fascinating

  • Awesome. I remember that I was in 10th grade I think.
