  • There's nothing 'light' on railways!!

  • Thanks for uploading this nice vid. We can appreciate the progress that have been made to ease handling stuff in 50 years. Workers at 9.22 had it all wrong though. o_O

  • this is so harry enfeild great thanks for posting it

  • these early OH&S (occupational Health and Safety) Vids are more informative and demonstrative to the bullshit we have to put up with today.

  • Shame she passed away. Well those were the days b4 feminism Enjoy

  • What kind of idiot dislikes this?

  • Unfortunately, some of the puny weaklings they breed these days, and their 'Bad Backs' wouldn't know where to start here.

  • @charade97 -- Your singing my song! The English language I learned as a child is virtually well dead and gone. Today we have to suffer what I describe as "Americanisms" and pigeon English.. Not too far from where I live there are two quite large housing estates which suffer from all the ills of today’s society - In their estates they have developed a unique vocabulary. "What" is pronounced as "wha" and >>>>>>

  • @goinghomesomeday1 may i ask You to send me titles of really old known English films where they speak very clear language as it was in good society. like this man.

  • @martpast1 Well, anything with Jack Hawkins-The Cruel Sea, The League of gentlemen' and Bridge on The River Kwai with Alec Guiness. Anything with John Mills. In fact any British film from the 1930's to the 1970's for a start! Let me know if you have trouble finding these. Some of the BBC TV series are also worth a look. Upstairs Downstairs from the 1970's etc.

  • @charade97 thanks for names. but i cant any British film--u tube doesnt work without precise name. i found super American film if U happen not to know :O H M A A G (1937)

  • @martpast1 Try this

The League of Gentlemen (1960) Jack Hawkins & Nigel Patrick

  • @goinghomesomeday1 Oh how I pity you living that close to your neighbours.ad luck, Old Boy!

  • @charade97 --Hello - Luckily, this neighbourhood is quite small and the only people who come and go are the people who live here. We don’t have any bother from neighbouring estates.

  • @goinghomesomeday1 How I pity you living that close to your neighbours. Bad Luck, Old Boy!

  • Boy! wouldn't minded have doing some shunting maneuvers with her back then LOL

  • no one is allowed to lift more than 100 grams today and only then wearing a high visibitly vest and after filling out 5 forms to confirm the authority to move said object...

  • Chumbley-Warner!

  • How well people spoke in those days, not the slovenly slurring noises that pass for speech now!

  • >>>>> “come here, I want you” translates (including profanities) “comeeerIfukinwantcha”.

And “will you please go away” translates “gerawaila”.

Yes, how sad to see the death of the Kings English

    Regards

    G

  • good old british advertisements

  • im guessing this is when health and saftey started

  • The rather well built woman in the fishnets at the Beginning ,is Joan Rhodes, she was a famous strongwoman act in the dying days of Vaudeville theatre, but also made several films and appeared in several Bob Hope shows Born in 1920 she is still alive and was recently writing her autobiography. Just thought you'd like to know that !!

  • @jeanniedee Joan Rhodes died on 30th May 2010.

  • What a great age, and hopefully a great life :0)

  • We had this training about strain and lifting on BR 35 years ago and they are still relevent to anyone doing a lot of lifting today.

  • Tasty bit of stuff though. I lost interest for some reason when she disappeared.

  • @Snedger You don't get eloction like that these days, do you? especially in this country. Oz

  • Very interesting and quite entertaining!

  • To right East Re stressing kits stll weigh a ton concrete sleepers seem heavier now then when I started 22 years ago!!

even the rail is now heavier

But I can still shovel ballast faster than the young uns!!

  • Aside from the facetious replies, this film, although dated holds just as true now as it did then. There is nothing lightweight on railways! Lift something incorrectly, and you may have the rest of your days to regret it - shifting and lifting concrete sleepers to name just one job, is not for idiots at 4cwt each!

I know, I have worked in PW gangs

  • Were is Mr Chumbley warner ?

  • i thought after a good curry you followed through

  • Superb! I can see where Harry Enfield got his inspiration from.

Sorry re the thumbs down - pressed the wrong one. Was meant to be thumbs up if that helps..

  • What a fascinating video, how things have changed.

I enjoyed the surprise appearance from Duffy's grandmother at the beginning!
