I actually stayed the night at Ampleforth Abbey last night and went to Compline. I'm not a Catholic but a Pentecostal Christian (although I dislike the idea of denominations as we all worship the same God :) ) but it was wonderfully peaceful. Listening to this is just like being back there.
@tjttzcspplt I believe compline is the same for every night. It's meant to be memorized eventually. Or at least that is how it is in the Book of Common Prayer for Episcopalians, and how it was at the convent that I stayed at last summer was. Only the readings changed nightly.
I am not a Catholic; doesn't mean I can't enjoy this. It is so awesome. When I close my eyes, I can picture myself in that vast church, with stone and wood all around me. What a wonderful experience that would be... Having the words there REALLY helps. As I have liked listening to Monks sing, this puts more "worship" in it; I can know what they are saying. Thanks for posting this. Now I think I may have to buy a CD of this music. Wonder if they put the lyrics/words on any of them.
sorry the lord is not with the catholic church.you do not put a mortal man in control of gods church. and confess your sins to him.catholicsm is a mixture of paganism and christianity. they changed the second commandment also.have you heard of the black pope? the catholic church fits all requirements of the beast. 666 is the popes name. filli vicarus dei.add it up in roman numerals it is 666.catholics there are good people in the catholic church being decieved.
Of course Catholicism incorporates elements of paganism. Paganism predates the Gospel and Paul recognised that those worshipping an "unknown god" (i.e. pagans) were on the right path. There is goodness in paganism that is brought to fulfilment in Christianity.
As to which version of the O.T. is authentic, I suggest you consult some Jewish scholars. That's what the Catholic Church did and what Luther failed to do, hence the difference in the 10 commandments.
"Black pope" is a nickname for the head of the Jesuits (he wears black as opposed to white worn in other religious orders and by the successor of St Peter). It's just Vatican politics - he used to be a big power broker when the Jesuits had more influence. What's the big deal?
Fooling around with numbers - now that IS superstition and paganism!!!
@salamonetalton you like to add up names eh? That's numerology and falls under divination and superstition. You are decieved then. And don't read the bible, it's a catholic book
@salamonetalton Why don't you shut up and pray and show us all up. BTW, what part of the Psalms do you have a problem with? On second thought, I am not interested. Go away, troll.
I converted from Calvinizm to Catholicism because our Savior, Jesus Christ is with the Catholic Church. This is the truth and undeniable. If you are ouside the Catholic Chuch and denounce the Catholic faith, it is apparent that you just envy the Catholic Church. No matter how hard you try to criticize the Catholic Church, it will be the main stream of Christianity eternally as it has been since the very time of its foundation by the hand of Jesus Christ.
There is always something that tugs at the soul of a man when reverent voices in unison sing like this, making that reverberation on ancient walls that have stood the test of time and reinforces the spirit of His faithful believers and rankles the curiosity of the secular man.
Of course, with modern illumination, ventilation, and fewer candles; the smokey haze is gone and there are fewer coughing fits; and thus some of the ambience of the old days is lost.
Night Prayer in Traditional Catholicism is called the Compline.
For those in the new religion of Novus Ordo, New Order, post-Vatican II new religion, learn something about "real Catholicism". Give up your Freemason religion.
Cool user name dude! If you can be your own pope, arbitrarily setting cut off points for orthodoxy, so can I!!!
I've decided I'm more nostalgic for early 1970s Catholicism than early '60s. It's all Pharisees, Roman collars, Opus Dei and neoconservatism since Benedict took over the show. I miss the old sandals, guitars and pop psychology. That's my tradition, dude! The Real Deal.
I opened up my prayer book, and Bible to follow along. Absolutely beautiful. All I can say is Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, All glory to God the Most High and Peace to His people on Earth.
wow, man, this video is something special! I just closed my eyes and felt i was there, in some church, just listening to these monks! This is totally different to the music that i usually listen to. Just hearing these monks singing relaxes me! Amazing stuff! You're a good man/woman for posting this.
Thank you for these videos. Compline has always been my favorite office of the day to recite, and this is a beautiful version of it. Thanks for posting.

It is found in the Liturgy of the Hours, and we can pray it also. Our souls can be lifted up to God with His Grace!
Beautiful to be sung in this way! God be praised

I visited Ampleforth abbey with a group from my school, and went to listen to this at compline (night prayer).
It is actually one of the most amazing things I have ever listened to, absolutely awesome :D

@herbgurl82 Perhaps. I thought the Psalm is different, but that everything else is the same.
