While playing a level hold L to access the sub-menu on top. Tap the d-pad up and down to select your item and left and right to select your Pokémon. Google for a list of items and Pokémon. You must use item "M Ball" for a Pokéball. Not all items are available in all level banks (stages) so you will have to select level "test" to use all available items.
