The WJ isnt the best model of jeep (in my opinion cherokee XJ is), but the WJ will go through, up and over anything a landrover can. land rovers are a lot more top heavy than the WJ. ive got a 2001 WJ with a Powertech I6 and selec-trac 4x4 and i drive through shit other vehicles shouldnt even attempt (such as POS toyotas). My point is, see that jeep, its stock and has no problems going over things that lifted wranglers have trouble with.

If your amazed by this you should look at the P38 Range rovers. I have a 4.6 V8 with air suspension completely stock and its fab off road, snow, wdaing depthe is great too...I also have an 01 Grand Cherokee which is good but not a patch on the Range Rover.

You can pick up a great condition, low mileage Range Rover here in the UK for around 6-7k. Not sure how much they are in your neck of the woods used? But if you can afford one, well worth a look.

i drive an 03 jeep wj overland, and the entire undercarage of the car is coverd in skidplates, so the grinding your hearing is the protective metal plats scraping against the rocks, not the actual floor of the vehicle
