you can tell that the rephase smooths out the engine, simply by the fact that the bike isn't walking itself across the parking lot on the kickstand like every stock xs does.
Nice, but back in the seventies when I rode an XS650, I knew at least two girls that really appreciated the vibration of my bike. Especially while idling at stop lights. ;-)
Whatever the people are saying, i really like the sound and it sounds like you know what you are doing! Cant wait to see the finished product! Sweet bike, nice job!
Excuse me if I'm wrong, but rephasing alone does nothing for improved horsepower or torque and only changes the sound and makes it shake more correct?
If your rephase also changes something else, you should let people know. If you're boring out the heads and using bigger pistons, or changing the valves or stroke or timing or compression please say so... I like the sound, and I see the point in that, but unless it includes other mods to make it perform it wouldn't be worth the bother to me.
Do some research on the rephasing, it definitely gives more than a "sound" change. Torque and throttle response are greatly improved, without modding any other internals. I have several customers using bone stock internals and just the rephased crank and cam, and those bikes run much stronger than a stock configuration. There are some great Tech writeups on the xs650 . com site and others... Take a look around, you'll see the difference
@oregonmeds What re-phasing does is give you near-perfect primary balance in an engine design that is notorious for shake. It reduces vibration. The sound then becomes that of an 83º twin, and thus, very similar to 90º twins, such as Ducati, Honda RC51, Suzuki SV1000, etc.
@po18guy Yamaha re-phased the TDM850 to make it the TRX850. They also did this with the Super Tenere 1200. In a stock XS, both pistons stop simultaneously at the top of the stroke and again at the bottom of the stroke. The crank thus has to accelerate both pistons from a stop twice per rev. In a re-phase, only a single piston stops at a time, while the other is still moving - its momentum assisting the stopped piston to accelerate. This benefits both power and reduces vibration.
with all due respect to krogshede, ( I to appreciate the 650 soul), when the 650 was raced back in the day, I would be very surprised if this wasnt done. I think this is one awsome sound from a cool 650 yami!!
What gains do you get from re-phasing, i figure there would be less vibration due to having one piston on exhaust stroke other on intake , where do u get a cam to work with this crank i dunno man this seems like alot of serious machining
I know this guy, he can do all the hard work for you - Hugh's HandBuilt
The gains are impressive, feel free to do a google search and find my blog and you can read more about it there. Youtube won't let me do a direct link of course.
Cranks are $300 and Cams are $185. These are exchanged prices on your rebuildable cores. Subject to change. Email me at HughsHandBuit @ Gmail for more information.
got here after seeing your rephased crankshaft auction on ebay... as I live in mexico, is very difficult for me to dissasemble the engine, send crankshaft to you and then have it shipped back.. but I am willing to talk my local machine shop into doing it..is there a way to get a detailed description of the procedure? also, same for the camshaft....
Those purists out there that say it's no longer a parallel-twin if you change the phase don't know what the hell they're talking about! When Honda came out with the Honda Dream 305s and the CB77 Superhawks in the early 1960's, both engines were parallel twins. Same engine, except the CB77 Super Hawk put out more power and rev'd higher because it had a 180 degree crank, one piston at BDC when the other was at TDC. So a 90 deg change from that should still make it a parallel twin! Nuff said!
When I first heard the bike running I thought what kind of radical cams and what kind of fuel is it burning . Then i read a little further. Nice job ,she sounds great and looks good as well. Thanks for posting. Is there a article or info on how to accomplish what you did ? How do you figure the timming and ignition, cams and everything else thats envolved.
No such thing as a dumb question. This is gonna get lengthy... I'll try to make is short. The stock pistons travel up and down in the cylinders at the same time. Basically a 360 Degree orientation. Re-Phasing to a 277 Degree engine orients the pistons 83 degrees from each other ion the crank rotation. This allows for higher RPM ranges, smoother running, and amazing application of power. Can't link here, but look at wikipedia "Big-Bang Firing Order" for more details.
@punkskalar Haha thanks! I just got into a lengthy article about it...Really appreciate the response though, and what a cool idea! This thing sounds EPIC!
It really helps to take advantage of other mods, or just leave it stockish. The rephase makes riding one of these bikes a dream. No more numb hands or butt from all the vides, plus the power delivery will put a smile on your face everytime you twist that throttle. Email if you have more questions, that's what I am here for. Hugh - HughsHandBuilt @ Gmail.com
If by the stock rotation's soul you mean "Little old lady watching 'Matlock' while knitting a sweater for the neighbor's dog" then the Re-Phase's soul would be "21 Year old Hottie who drives a Hot Rod Cadillac, serving the finest Micro-Brews at your local watering hole and then going to your place after work " then I'm ok with that... :)
@punkskalar >> The unik thing about a XS 650 paralleltvin is it;s vibes and sound and engine Characteristic. All those thing is changed when you re-phase,- you might as well put a whole different engine in it,- its closer to a v-tvin when you re-phase.
