  • we just used ti like, do out own thing, we just used to like

  • Blew their entire album advance on BMW's, dropped out of school because "people were telling them what to do", living with their parents, and listening to music as loud as you can through headphones. Classic.

  • source direct is beast!

  • He kills his ears @ 7:38 :D

  • @TheVisitor3 indeed

  • 00:44 "making DnB music for the next century...CHECK MY RIMS" Priceless

  • It was definitely the right decision for them to leave college and further their love of music elsewhere. It was their music that first inspired me to listen to D&B. They're a part of D&B history... D&B legends, big up!

  • watch?v=lGnSvismXvA Listen to this and then skip 1 minute 28 seconds into the above Source Direct piece (disclaimer: I didn't find this myself, @Notezy1 did)

  • Who are the artists shown?

  • hahaha if these source direct lads are anything like me, they will now be regretting 'taking the headphones'. i used to 'take the headphones' and have developed the worst case of tinnitus imaginable ... at least i had fun getting it though eh

  • Ha, agree with them on the comment of Hertfordshire (where I'm from), it's a very dull area...

  • Holy crap, what is the first tune? It is massive!

  • @BreakTheYagura

Nevermind, I should have just searched it in the comments. It's Source Direct - The Crane.

  • @BreakTheYagura It's The Crane (by Source Direct, of course).

  • Source Direct kicks it.

  • Till the next century!!! Only underground music that in immortal like that: JUNGLE!!! Junglist for life, peace!

  • Why have DnB artists stopped using the Amen break??? Who cares if it's "overused". The Amen started DnB

  • @OperationGeneside exactly mate ..we need somebody to bring it back in a big way :)

the music scene these days is weak

  • @truthfilter check out jungle syndicate, scientific wax, foundation x, life4land... all crews still bringing the amen pressure :)

  • @OperationGeneside I still use it... a lot

have a listen and let me know what you think.

look for Mr manuva on soundcloud

  • Comment removed

  • @MrSargy2009 yeah, I don't use the full break. but I've got atleast two songs online where you should be able to recognise it.

  • @OperationGeneside check out Nebula, Dub-One, Paradox (Alaska), Fanu, Equinox, B-Key, Dom & Roland, Breakage for more contemporary Amen usage

  • Source Direct Big !

  • Old Skool jungle type DnB over anythin

  • dope ass tracks! i love jungle (or old skool dnb?)

  • they so have tinitus now

  • @zeker111 Must do! That was well loud on the cans

  • its a relic

  • u could do a pisstake mockumentary on these two, would be dead good

  • I watch this and I want to stand up and rip a whole in the space-time continuum and go back to these golden years and relive it all again.

  • @migraine516 Me too. But, meh. I have the means to create the Jungle I want to hear. Jungle is NOT the past. There is nothing wrong with creating it NOW! :D

  • enit, cars, ganjas, beats and fanny...

  • Good documentary but that jackass is asking for tinnitus :)

  • The best ever....END. ;)

  • geweldig, dat was zwaar genieten, bedankt voor de upload!

  • cool BMWs guys

  • 4:10 the beats, bass and the soft pad sounds ...with the image of that beautiful girl it's a moment I would want to last for ever.

  • Fuckin right infiltrate. There hasnt been anyone since these two that really 'cut the mustard'.

  • No wonder source direct is so good on headphones...

  • @mud409 HA !

  • Damn...he must be deaf now or have a serios Tinnitus. Insane volume on the headphones...great short documentary. Nice to see how their home studios from back in the day.

  • these guys are legit. i feel the same way as them, minus the fact im not a producer

  • This music was wayyy ahead of it's time.

  • Oh MAN, this is awesome!

I remember seeing this on tv at the time, i should still have it somewhere on tape...

    Thanks for putting this up!

Some things stuck in my mind all that time: The cars, the cannabis , but mainly the INSANE volume on their headphones! Crazy stuff!

Gotta find me that Therapy 12",,,

  • It's funny, they're such nerdy kids, but they made some good music though.

  • @sebeasy Nerdy? Wrong adjective. You meant lethal.

  • I neved liked Pendulum...

  • source direct are og's

  • Thanks for uploading this!! You have anything else about oldschool dnb?

  • and hertfordshire is still as boring as it ever was.

  • Photek and Goldie both mentioned Björk...

  • explain? liek good or bad?

  • No man, it's good, Björk is really great. They all are. I think it's super all those artists listen to eachother's music and have respect.

  • @AnthonyDingemanse For me Bjork is absurd music I prefer Massive Attack or Portishead.

  • Okay, that''s cool, I'm more into Björk myself, respect for Massive Attack too, don't really know Portishead's music.

  • Goldie and Tricky used to have beef over Bjork.... She's a playa!!!

  • @VECTRISM Hehe... but you're right. Fun. I forgot.

  • I seriously seriously wonder what it will be like if Photek and Ryuichi Sakamoto come together and if they can fuse any magic from the contrasting sound element each possesses.

  • wich software are they using? it appears also in the photek video of this documentary

  • I believe its the Atari version of Cubase. Popular with electronic music producers in the early and mid 90s

  • This is old Atari, and Cubase. No one uses this anymore though ;)

  • How do you mean no one?! I just bought it (seriously). But still, producers use it because of it's great timing.

  • I've had an Atari, with the old version of cubase for 10 years. I use it as a paperweight, and the timing is great. lol

  • (Sigh...)

  • the last tune is baaaad!

  • YOU ARE A NINJA

    CONCEAL YOUR IDENTITY!

  • I used to listen to Source Direct in my car as loud as I could.

My fucking stereo at home hits pretty hard too; but nothing like what these guys formed their sound around. I just try to give as much credit to their vision as I can -- even if it's only on a personal level.

  • Source Direct for me is the best Drum N Bass, that ever made.

  • Phil Source run it rude boy .........

  • is this kruder and dorfmiester

  • Yes! Fuck Pendulum, Old Skool, man!

  • I agree

    Pendulum is the fucking worst

  • @TheReapersSon

the only credit i like to give pendulum is their sound skills, other than that they should have stayed FAR away from dnb.

  • @TheReapersSon Pendulum isn't even really full on drum'n'bass, it's a mixture of other genres, so I don't think this video relates to their band.

  • @TheReapersSon I've nothing against a band performing Drum & Bass, as long as it's a Bukem/4hero style Jazz band. But a band using rock guitars and trance keyboards?? No, just NO. No no NO!!!!

  • source direct is the shit! i miss them days. keep it ol'skool

  • i bet there deaf now lol

  • Absolutely brilliant series. Ty 5*****

  • LEGENDS!

anyone got an ID on that first track?

  • The crane

  • @bartolome3 source direct - the crane

  • fuck me the first track sounds soo fat

  • if anything is starting to sound plastic it's because it's over produced, and everything is straight to digital or mp3 now instead of cut to acetate/plates/pressed on vinyl or put on analog mixtapes. this video is pretty sick just seeing all the gear these guys had, i would almost guess that they come from fairly well of families to begin with. good old atari + cubase.

  • Atari ST + Cubase yea, those were the tools of many mans trade. I used to watch my dad knocking out Dub tunes like 15 years ago on the same setup.

I still support the vinyl killers though man. Whether its true sound quality and warmth, or something else, CD's and MP3's, especially MP3's are nothing compared to a good 12".

Also, I really like outboard / rack equipment, and I think they shouldn't be completely overshadowed by software.

Sick documentary man, where can I get a clearer copy?

  • yeah man, im feeling the same way. Looks like it was almost a rich kids leisure activity back in the day, but cool that it was and that it gave us the music it did.

  • Man,those Beemers at the start of the vid are fuckin' class!

  • those guys remind me of me... When it comes to my likes I

    - LIke music

    -Girls

    -Chillin

    -Driving in fast cars

    oh hellz yeah

  • very original and unique interests

  • Exactly.

  • That sounds like every straight bloke this side of the solar system. I dont know why smoking weed aint there though.

  • Ya, I was like Im not the only one..

  • my comment was in response to smokestrobehoovers and therealKINDLE.

    youtubes commenting system hates me.

  • I can see why! lol! Look, all Emotions aside, Look up a video Called 'the Loudness War' (by "LoudnessWar"), & it will explain why it all sounds plastic.

And if you can 4give my comment, pass it on so that we can do comething about it. People are charging nasty amounts of money to have their tracks blasted out of a range that reaches Punch & Clarity. :-(

    Thanks. Kindle

  • I'm a sound engineer, but also a musician. I'm afraid they're right - they were making these tunes way before the loudness war truly began, and the overdriven sound of Jungle is all about pushing levels. True they don't seem to understand that just pushing the headphone volume is not the same thing, and they do come across as chavs, but you have to accept that 'mastering' is an art that varies across styles of music. D'n'B works best when it sounds like the speakers are exploding at any volume!

  • Matering IS an art yeh! Boy don't I know it! Took me ages to study it! And there's no 'Right' or 'Wrong'; Only Styles.

I'm not sure. There's many types of D n'B out now it's hard to tell. Especially Ambient D n'B. You have to treat that more like R n'B. Jungle: Well my old CD's were Matered at a low level, but the new one's mixed by Shy FX Were Loud as Bjork Shouting! It was fun to go back & master them how I wanted from the old CD's. But Hard D n'B yeh. Pendulum Master at Stupid Levels!!

  • Proper mastering is an art. Most of the 'on the fly' mastering nowadays is a load of rubbish, and the technician really hasn't got a clue what he's on about, from the sound of things anyway. Ive got a couple of records that sound clipped to f*ck, you can hear the distortion clear as day, like it was an unfinished master.

I dont think DnB & Jungle should be mixed so it sounds like its damaging your speakers, especially the liquid and atmospheric stuff. A great skill to learn though.

  • At last... Someone who understands. If you take an old copy of any various artist 'Jungle' cd, & open it up in a sound editing software such as Adobe Audition or Cool Edit, you'll see that there's so much room for: clarity, punch, highs & lows & most important... It's not limited.

Then take the same track from a later release (again, CD) & open it up.. You'll see that everything is clocked up, full volume, no gaps for clarity of the kicks & snaps of the drums & it sounds insipid. Bland. u know?

  • Thanks man, a mutual understanding. I bet a lot of people think im talking a load of BS, but they just need to do what you said, and open up the audio to see what we mean!

  • tell me the names of these tunes please...

  • Do yourself a favour - just find every Source Direct tune you can and enjoy. You don't need to know the names. :)

  • i have, i realised i have the whole SD discography on my pc :D

  • Comment removed

  • Source Direct were legends. Shame they're not rolling it out anymore. They and Photek created such a poineering sound in the mid 90's. Made for the Blue Note Metalheadz days.

  • where can i find a track listing for this video the music is fucking insane

  • Class man, they look well young.... Big respects to the source direct boys. The metalheadz era of the 90s was fresh as fuck man!

  • This doc was created during a very interesting time of dnb. You can tell that the synths and leads are more floaty and melodic and less 'dirty' than the older jungle, but the drums are still cut-up and rearranged and not just looped. Little did anyone know that most dnb producers would bitch out only a few years later and do nothing but layer 909s playing jump-up rhythms over looped Amen breaks.

  • how do they rearrange the drum beats liek that?

  • I think they were using Cubase. The old school jungle way of doing it is with trackers. There's tons of ways of doing it, though. Cutting every hit of the Amen break and rearrange it like that or use sample offset commands in trackers. Whatever, really. I make breakcore (which is more extreme stuff with similar production techniques) in a tracker called Renoise myself.

  • sonicavenga - who cares they are M3s and back in the mid 90s that was mint !

  • atari st cubase is black and white haha, wow that's old!

  • still if you use it for midi only, it was the only rock solid system available for years

  • can an akai actually take the pain of fast midi data though?

  • just love the photek remix on bjorks 'i miss you' with the miles daves? trumpets... thanks for posting!

  • Imagine being 20 owning a studio like that! and making tunes like that b4 all this fancy fancy computer that to me doesn't cut it like the real equipment

  • yeah real equipment would be awesome, but the software has made electronic music production available to a lot more people which has resulted in a lot of great of music

  • Matching BMWs...what a couple of prize wankers.

  • @sonicavenga what a prize jealous wanker!

  • @sonicavenga well you won't be winning any prizes on spot the difference, ones stock and purple, ones black with tacky add ons.

  • there mixdowns arent great but the vibe in there tunes is incredible and thats what counts

  • its actually really unfortunate that i love this music but now i can only stand it in strides. it becomes very boring to me after a while these days :(

  • source direct are legends they are production geniuses, dnb isnt easy to produce you fucking fag, compared to shit like hard house dnb is like classical music, a music of precision and creativity (the exact opposite of bollox like hard house, same beat, same baseline, same rave stabws YAWN!!!!), so advanced that fags like you cant understand it, especially if u want to make diverse original music like source direct, btw the tune is THE CRANE, fucking devastating tune.

  • for real dude, dnb is the most technical and advanced tuneage there is. fuck your gabber and your hard house that music is garbage and isnt even effort to produce. dnb/jungle WILL BE classical music someday. dnb forever!

  • I guess you've never heard of IDM or Breakcore.

A lot goes into Gabber and House, you'll know when it does, because it stands out from the rest.

  • i have, and that is why i took the time to post what i feel.

  • Ive been into Jungle and production since back in the Altern8, Remarc, BizzyB rave era, and I can safely say you both have no idea what you are talking about....and thats coming from a Junglist.

Pull your heads out your asses.

  • if those comments were aimed at SD, you're both fking retarded. you clearly aren't a junglist or a fan of dnb if you're hating on these guys. source direct released some absolute classics on metalheadz back in day, tracks that have stood the test of time and ALOT of people are praying for thier return to the studio.

minsets like "you cannot master at that level" is the reason why dnb sounds so fking plastic now-a-days.

i think it's you that should pull your head out of your arse mate.

  • @Infiltrate808 This is completely false. You guys are all about how difficult it is. What matters is the music. This closeminded way of thinking is why modern dnb sucks so much now.

  • they may be deaf now, but they left some timeless classics along the way. i guess that was the price

  • Fukin legends,pure and simple!!!

  • Comment removed

  • 1. Not true, a good set of headphones and amp and an engineer that knows his phones can mix just as well on headphones. The key to a good mix is always A/Bing with different setups.

    2. True

    3. True

  • Comment removed

  • if it sounds good quiet it'll sound good loud, the reverse IS NOT true.

  • that is usually right but i have to agree with the boys that the source direct stuff actually sounded better loud

  • then again you should never ever have your headphones on that volume. but i do think he's trying to show off a little on the vid ;-)

  • if somebody would produce for a couple of years on this volume he probably can't tell the diffrence between a kick and a snare...

  • Comment removed

  • wat song is played on the road it sounds like the dreamcast beginning

  • Wow, they drive BMW M3s. Hm . . .

  • what is that music prog they're using?

    anyone got an idea?

  • cubase on a atari

  • SD boys have broke up now.

  • they are my GODS!

  • Thanks a lot!

  • you are just going to have to pay bruv.....unless you're ok with using the demo forever

  • whats a good software i can use to make dnb songs?

that isnt as expensive as FL studio

  • Maybe you should try using a tracker. I use one myself, and its pretty awesome.

Check out this piece of software called 'Renoise'. It may seem daunting at first, but its really awesome, trust me.
