Good evening!
I don't know how he can say he's done 'nothing at all', every one of his performances is a piece of gentle beauty, you don't make art by not putting your heart and soul in, even just a little
Am I the only one who thinks that, judging mostly from his speaking voice, if Hoffman was an animal, he would be something like a weasel? I have no idea why. He just sounded kind of like a frustrated sidekick, I guess. XD
Guinness didnt want to attend the ceremony. It was Dustin Hoffman who talked him into attending as he was in the UK doing publicity for KRAMER VERSUS KRAMER at the time.
Come on, guys. Hoffman's speech was funny and self-effacing. Why do you think his speech was longer than Guinness's? Not because Hoffman is self-absorbed---the opposite, in fact. So much can be said about Guinness, whereas Guinness himself is a humble man who has little to say about himself, his work, and other things involving himself.
@YourFaceWillDie468 Why doesn't my comment have any thumbs up? You all know everything I said made a valid point. Why not stop paying attention to how long Hoffman's speech was and start paying attention to exactly what he was saying? He's in awe of Guinness! And rightfully so. Besides, of course he'd look somniferous when delivering the speech. It was a long fucking speech. You guys have got to start thinking about things rather than just jumping to conclusions because of little things.

Guinness = the Western world's greatest character actor of the 20th century - just view his range in his movies and then his tv turn as john le carre's george smiley. an unassuming giant of delightful impersonation. i don't know which is worse, watching the self-absorbed Hoffman introducing him or, in another clip on youtube, the imbecilic Letterman interviewing him. Like an old lion being harassed by a toothless warthog and a creepy spider-monkey, in my perhaps very unkind, critical view.. :P
A true actor from the old school. Not a 'star', but an amazing ACTOR. I'll echo what others have said about his attitude to Star Wars and everything surrounding it. He never put the film or the fans down. He was a true gentleman.
The presence of a gentleman, the voice that echoes within our ears and the spirit that will live within us forever. It is well debated that his voice is greater than Liam Neeson.
Lol Dustin has more to say about Alec than Alec himself!
But seriously, he's a great actor, as is Alec. And perhaps Dustin isn't as classy as Alec, but he's pretty classy all the same. His voice isn't a pain to listen to either, but once again, Alec tops him in that category. I wish everyone would stop with the abuse. Watch Hoffman's Oscar speech for Kramer vs. Kramer. He's terribly witty and humble.
fucking dustin hoffman, just blabs on to hear himself talk, what a fucking self loving narcissist.... with those over dramatic pauses and cliche phrases.... what a fucking dweeb.

What a bore Hoffman was. Go back to miking stupid movies with Streisand. What a washup Hoffman is. So pretentious. A great contrast to this great actor.
Yeah, why is it that some of these Hollywood heavies don't like doing fantasy, or even comedy work. Like Orson Welles playing Unicron in Transformers; The Movie, or even John Cusack for making Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer. All three of these, I thought, were enjoyable movies, but shunned by the actors themselves. I mean if someone wants to tell you that a movie you did was their favorite, but it wasn't your favorite, be glad for that moment anyway, gosh.
@chairmanofthebored1 It would be fine if it was a one-time thing. We're talking about a franchise where the characterizations literally glued themselves to the actors forever. Guinness would have probably been less irritated by it if people in the then-modern era did not instantly say Obi-wan when they saw his name. To actors like him, its kinda like saying "I don't care about your other work, but thanks for playing Ben Kenobi!".
...Alec Guinness is a POS!!!...In most people's minds Alec Guinness is Obi-Wan Kenobi. But despite gaining eternal nerd worship and a percentage of future Star Wars earnings for his role (thus making him rich for life), Guinness wasn't a fan of the character. In his autobiography, he mentions a small child coming up to him and saying that he'd seen Star Wars 100 times.Guinness replied that he'd give the kid an autograph if he promised to never watch the movie again and the boy burst into tears.
lol, guy at 6:53!!! How did they allow him in? Just kidding. Alec Guiness is one of the best actors ever. Trully deserved. Why didn't Dustin say anything about sir Alec in Star Wars? Probably, he didn't watch it:)
Probably because that was the LAST movie that Sir Alec wanted to be remembered for--he had a body of work that is still amazing. He pops up in almost every David Lean movie. Watch "Bridge over the River Kwai" or "Lawrence of Arabia" to see him shine.
@pluto4847 Watch "Great Expectations". There you can see a young - and handsome - Alec Guinness! (very cute. I would have said yes to a proposal.) :)
Funny: when they started the Guinness Book of Records I thought it had something to do with him! (haha. That´s how great he was considered in those days.)
Alec Guiness was a great human being and actor. He seems to be from an era that is unregcognisable now, one where prodigious talent and unique character made a person celebrated and successful.
What year was this? Dustin Hoffman looks quite young. By the way execlent actor (Alec Guinness) his peformance in Bridge on the River Kwai was fantastic.
What year was this? Dustin Hoffman looks quite young. By the way execlent actor (Alec Guinness) his peformance in Bridge on the River Kwai was fantastic.
As Guinness had seen the Star Wars script, he recognized, that this will change everything and he worked for Lucas without geting payed. He wants to have a part of the income the Film would bring, what makes him very ritch at last.
But i think what embarrased him, was that the Succes had been that huge, that he get reduced only on Star Wars.
My first movie I watched of Alec was "Star Wars" From that I watched "The Bridge On The River Kwai," "The Lavender Hill Mob"&"Lawrence of Arabia" I respect him as an actor and as a person. He definately embodied someone different in each role. Bravo Alec Guinness.

you wouldn`t like his old movies if you were there in that time when those movies were new. now you just want to be excentric and shit by loving foreign movies and old movies...fuck you!!
@Beck19781 Couldn't agree more, my friend. You forgot two smaller, but very effective roles: "Great expectations" and "Doctor Zhivago". But every his role is golden.
First: to those who don't understand/can't appreciate why Hoffman presented: these 2 actors are linked by their descernable identites as comedians and dramatists. Each has a separate identity in comedy and drama. Second: those curious about Hoffman's "mood" that evening should watch clips of his acceptance speech for best actor (this was the year in which he won for "Kramer vs. Kramer". 3. There's a reason why Guinness was embarrased by his participation in "Star Wars". Just watch it.
What a great actor this man was . Who else could have attempted the tour d force of the D'Ascoyne family and who else could have done it so successfully? Even with a virtually non speaking part in "A Foreign Field " he came close to stealing the show.! This award was very richly deserved and we are lucky he left us such a fine cinematic legacy.
oh its so cute, Dustin takes himself so seriously. Wasnt it Alec Guiness who told Dustin Hoffman, who is a method actor, "my dear boy you really must yearn to ACT..."
Yeah of course...We never forget than inmortal words:"Vader was seducted by the dark side of the force,The force wiil be you..always..Use the force, luke,,,Luke trust me". R.I.P.
haha...LOL the comments...haha...and also, does not Dustin Hoffman has the exact same voice that Robert Downey Jr:???Or Jodie Foster and Holly Hunter, or Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon...haha...stupid comment...

Alec Guinness, the master of the Force. One of the all time greatest actors.

Hoffman unfortunately drags on way too long in his introduction but thankfully Sir Alec is as witty and gracious as he always is and was.
Definitely one of the most subtle and talented of actors of the 20th Century.
