I'm a big-time JB fan. I like this cover, and that Joe took it in a new direction. However, to say it's "a million times better" than Tom's original version is just plain nuts. This is a case where the original cannot be topped, ever. It's like saying that someone could do a better cover of "Satisfaction" than the Stones originally did. Yeah, good luck on that!
got to disagree with uglybob....can't compare apples & oranges...this is certainly an excellent cover but Joe's version doesnt have Tom's soul...both great tho & will probably go out & buy this
@unitedstatesofbeer1 I agree mate. No doubting that Joe is a talented guy, but he still sounds like John Mayer, and that says it all really. This version sounds like a bad 'New' Black Keys track.
@grubber1985 The only thing that makes him sound like John Mayer is the fact that he actually knows how to sing and sings all the time. It's the one thing I don't like about Joe. I wish I would hear his normal voice instead of his beyond pristine singing voice. His guitar playing destroys Mayer and most modern guitarists though.
A lot of people think he's one dimensional, but I don't hear verbatim licks from Eric Johnson, Paul Kossoff, Gatton, or Clapton when Joe is playing. I hear Joe.
mediocre at best. kudos for the effort though.......I guess I base this opinion on the fact that I have been listening to, singing, and playing Blues, exclusively for over 30 years. And also I happen to be fan of Tom Waits.
This is a showcase of everything that is wrong with Joe Bonamassa. He is technically flawless. and this is a different take on an incredible song, which is respectable. But no matter what, he cannot get away, in any case, without sounding sterile. Some people are into it, thats cool and all, but he is like Derek Trucks in the sense that he is a talented guitarist, not musician.
@unitedstatesofbeer1 Honey, I don't know what you've been smokin' but you need to by something with a little higher quality if you think Joe sounds sterile or that he's not a musician.
@TheBarkinFrog I apologize but I did not say anything regarding his technical ability in any sort of a derogative manner. "...that he is not a musician"-no he can play guitar, I feel thats unnecessary. What I criticized was his lack of anything revolutionary or important. he's loved by a circle of cum guzzling throne polishers like yourself-a collective of 1 dimensional nobodys, because he is NOTHING IMPORTANT.
@unitedstatesofbeer1 You know, you're entitled to your opinion, just as we all are. But your last sentence was entirely unnecessary...and it's no way to talk to a lady. Don't be such a boor.
@unitedstatesofbeer1 if you play an instrument you practically a musician and saying derek trucks isnt a musician thats just fucked up so can you please shut up everyone complains about the new musicans like joe and complains that there is no good music anymore so why pick on, joe you sort of people should just listen to nothing cause you just hate everything so please go away your boring as shit.
@Thedeoradude -I have to say 'jas13412' sums it up beautifully,in a nutshell and I would further suggest that if you're not sure what you're doing here by now and you need to ask me,then you are probably the latter....retarded.But that's just my humble offering.
what are you all talking about?? apparently you don't understand the character of the song as this version in no way captures it. Tom Waits is more about the scene that he paints in his songs and the characters that make up his world of songs than just giving you something that sounds good. This just takes a wonderful story that Waits wrote wiith exactly the right stage and lighting, and replaces it with a "nice" groove. Not my idea of improving a song.
@jasl3412 your oh so wrong...joe's version is 10X better the Waits. I give props to Waits for writeing a good song, but his version is slow, boring, and amateurish compared to joe's. Sorry bro, but Joe blows Tom out of the water with this song. Waits couldnt dream of ever playing Joe's version, and anybody with 2 guitar lessons could play waits version. Your whole wonderful story and painting a picture bs is exactly that...b....s.
@jasl3412 Personally I understand that the character of the song relates directly to the vision of the performer. It's like other forms of artistic expression. If you could put DaVinci, Monet, and Picaso in the same room and ask them to paint the same model, you'd get three distinctly different paintings, none of which would have more merit than the others.
In this case, JB is simply telling the story from a different angle, a different point of view. It has no more or less merit.
@dvdsmlprstylr i care that you dont care a lot not. and i am glad there are still dickheads in the world who live only to outdick the other dickheads. i also like english equivalents of the american "dick". cunt. and wanker.
so i ll go on to say that you out cunt and out wank us all. "WANKER!"
1 million times better version than Tom Waits' original. Absolutely nothing wrong with Toms composition but I really like Joes' sleazy blues tone that he's got going on here. Toms composition and lyrics A+. Joes feeling and blues A+.
The lad's an outstanding guitarist (I AM a fan) and he's bravely put a very traditional slant on a wonderfully weird original. However, it's testament to the towering artistry of Tom Waits just how 'ordinary' this sounds.
It's instances like this that highlight the creative gulf between a fantastic player and a fantastic composer...
Another fantastic song from Joe Bonamassa. If you're in Austin, TX March 24th join me at the concert at The Paramount Theater. Should be an awesome show. Looking forward to it.

Take it from a huge fan of Tom's. This cover is the only cover of his stuff I've ever heard that was better than the original. It is very good.

Very tough to cover a Tom Waits song, you'd wanna make sure you do it right, I think this version is very good though.

@dvdsmlprstylr trying to outdick not only trollers, but someone who merely suggested clarification of the present overuse of the word.
how pathetic is that? greeting from under the bridge. heh heh
