  • actually the engine in the 240T was the B21ET.(2,1L, 155hp in stock spec)

    It's very similar to the B23ET which came in the first 760 Turbo (2,3L, 185hp)

    both engines have forged internals, the blocks are very strong: cast iron shortblock, heads are aluminium with OHC shim & bucket setup. Very simple and durable)

    The 240T GrA racecar used to run 285km/h down 'Conrod straight' at Bathurst. (Francevic, Bowe)

    B23ET is a Turbocharged 182Hp engine from aprox 80-90, so if i am to belive the duel V70R - 23ET nonturbo, please post engine specs!!!!!! :P

    but YES, volvo turboengines are the best, and can take more beating than most other brands. often seen in race\drift bmw's and other just becouse of volvos stamina during max power usage.

    one example is f.ex. manta magic on youtube.

    Opel Manta\Vauxhall Manta tuned with a compressor(?) AND Turbo, 16V!

  • volvo have some awsome engines for turbo tuning.. one of the best for 4cylinder turbo.. peopel use them it other car becose they are fucking awsome.. have seen a race where a tuned 700hp volvo 240 turbo beat a porsche 911..

  • Why can no one accept that the volvo 240 is a great car? You can pull about 1000 hp of an B23ET engine and if you don´t belie me google it!! I have 3 of my own and they haven´t let me down anyway. one of them won a race from 0-100kmh against a V70R and thats without turbo . Compete that !!

  • i am so amazed about ur comment, u said what i wanna say that they r all modified but in comparison i checked up the final results of this race and i found that BMW 635 csi had blown its engine but volvo was out of fuel so finaly thanx alot gonbugas

  • There is a german saying "Turbo läuft, Turbo säuft". In english "Turbo goes, Turbo drinks (huge amounts of gas)".

    I guess that old volvo suffered the same fate.

  • Yes, my Volvo 'säuft'. but I have a friend with a slow 320i, that one drinks as much.

    Mine has 280bhp, the BMW only has about 150BHP... So, It think they're both thirsty..;)

  • Look man, I'm not knocking Volvos, especially not the old ones. I'd love to have a Turbo-Brick. I know these cars have incredible potential, and have wonderful Parts-interchangeability. I have worked extensively on them. All I'm saying is the stock Vehicles can't compare, and that's where its at. I have to accept the same for BMW's VS most Japanese cars. Jap cars (stock) are simply faster (generally) than stock BMWs (M series and Tuners excluded).

  • Point being the Turbo is the only thing making the Volvo faster. Are we comparing Cars or Upgrades? If upgrades, then the car does not matter; if comparing Cars, we have to compare them stock.

  • That's exactly my point. it takes the Turbo and extensive suspension modifications in order for that Volvo to hang with that BMW. That 635 is almost bone stock. They added a stiffer suspension and a different Camshaft to that M30 engine, and that's it. Look, my brother owns 8 Volvos. I own 4 BMWs. the only way any one of his cars can beat any one of mine is by adding a Turbo. That just means the Turbo beat me. If I add a Turbo on mine, we're right back where we started.

  • Alot of Volvo cars are Turbo stock (i.e. the 850 Turbo, 240 Turbo, 740 Turbo). It is stock.

  • What an idiot. Volvo's amazing B21FT is only a 2.1 turbo 4-cylinder, the turbo effectively makes it use as much air as a big straight-6, y'know.. like the bmw has? So its all fair.

    Volvo engines are way better than the BMW rubbish.

    The BMW is a better car from the factory It has an M30 engine which is seriously reliable, low maintenance and has no lag N/A. The car as a whole is better. Handles better, has a nicer interior and looks stunning. The volvo is ugly. Force the induction on an M30 and they generate a shitload of power with little lag provided its done properly.

    On the race track it's totally different, the cars are engineered to the hilt.

    The M30 reliable? It's an interference engine, if that timing chain breaks it lunches the whole thing. Not to mention those uneven cooling issues.

    How much was the 635 CSI in the showroom compared to the 240T? Probably twice the price.

  • @revcom301 The timing chain on that engine will outlast the car by a factor of 10. They are built very well. The cooling system's major downfall on the bimmer is the mechanical fan easily fixed with an E Fan conversion. I have an M30 in an e34, so long as the cooling system is looked after there are not problems. As for the s38 which was in the M6, the same unfortunately cannot be said.

    Yeah, and whereas BMW has won 55 International Engine of the Year awards since 1999 (when this started) and is on top of all manafacturers, Volvo hasn't even won 1 award in any class yet.

    Volvo engines are so good they needed PORSCHE to help them design their 5 cylinder in the 90's, and they YAMAHA designed the V8 which they used in the XC90 for a while. In the 80's their cars came with old pushrod Renault engines.

    BMW's 4 cylinder M10/M12 engine was designed in 1961 and also made the list of the 10 best engines of the 20'th century by a car historian.

    You see this engine was good enough to be used in Formula 1 in 1982-1987, and it won Brabham the world title in 1983 with Nelson Piquet becoming world champion, scoring the first turbo-title. In 1986 when they were still allowed to use max boost in qualifying Paul Rosche said that the BMW 4 cyl, had over 1400hp on the dyno. From 1,5litres.
