The commentator should have studied his materiel, especially his pronounciation. Wilhelm was Emperor (Kaiser der Deutschen), but also King of Prussia, the name of the port of Kiel is pronounced KEEL not Kile and Compiegne is pronounced
@chloe7829: Nonsense. German & French comentators do not always pronounce English place names exactly. Similarly English-speaking comentators are not obliged to pronounce German & French names exactly as native speakers do. Some people are ugly snobs who think that they are somehow more exalted because they pronounce foreign words & names like natives do. We don't have to be like them.
It seems from this clip that the US won the First World War after less than a year on the front! Great - UK and France been fighting for 4. Wilson's 14 points were a pathetic basis for a peace settlement and were a major contributory factor in events that led to WW2 (eg the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). The fall of both German and Austrian monarchies inevitiably led to instability in central Europe.
@Rawego Where did you get that piece of wisdom that "Kaiser" is "King" in German?
Kaiser is a German word coming from the Latin Ceasar. A Kaiser in English is an Emperor. Kaiser Wilhelm II was Emperor of Germany AND King of Prussia. Period.
The French were not "demoralized". They had been launching offensive after offensive, and resisted victoriously to all German attacks. They were on the offensive again on the whole front since June 1918. PS: Wilhelm was King of Prussia as well as emperor of Germany.
