  • If you want to here an AMAZING cover of this song type in John Prine-Angel From Montgomery (Cover by Bonne Finken)

  • Kristen Stewart sang this! :>

Okay I know what wot would u reply:

THUMBS UP if Kristen Stewart didn't bring u here. ;))

  • One of the Best... If you like (love) John Prine, and haven't heard of Steve Goodman - give him a listen too, same era, similar style: authentic sweet sad folk stories. (I can't believe anyone disliked this!!) Great Song.

  • How can you not like this?!... Original artist doing his own song... Nothing better, especially with a sad song like this one.

I've seen JP a couple of times and his songwriting and delivery always pull me in. He is, in my opinion, one of the most under-appreciated artist's of our time.

  • Saw him last night at Massey Hall in Toronto. Nothing compares.

  • I'm going to go downstairs

I'm gong to sit by myself

All alone in the middle of the night

I'm going to put a John Prine record on

I think we need to slow down for awhile

  • Good down to earth pickin and singing..let me know what you guys think of my cover of Spanish Pipedream (above, folkdub)

  • I love the way he sings this song. He not only sings it but tells it too, i really like his emotion, it feels so real. What a great song. So full of raw strong feelings.

By the way you guys, i really don't mean ot bother you or anything really, but i just uploaded a cover i did of this song, and really tried to put my heart in it, with my own feel. Check it out in the video responses "mathieu saikaly" or on my channel if you got 3minutes, its right there. That would be great :). Thank you!!!

  • I might be mistaken, but this man is grossly underrated.

  • i LOVE THE WAY HE COMMUNIATES ITS LIKE HE IS TELLING A STORY OR SOMETHING NOT JUST SINGING A SONG VERY ADAMENT TO THE POINT HE IS ALL YOU GET

    BEAUTIFUL

  • Oh the stories that Martin could tell.

  • Mandolin sounds awesome!!

  • The greatest story teller of our time.

  • Evanston Love!!!!

  • Not sure why the mandolin guy showed up...sounds better raw

  • john is the man--wonder if he knows where new-zealand is//would luv for him to visit

  • @SamsonExperience1: Can't wait for you to come here! I think you'll love it, and you'll be surprised by how nice we actually are :)

  • Every song he sings brings me to tears. He is amazing!

  • Well Bonny Raitt did a good job on this one...but John says it all...

So much tks 4 the upload.

    Have a nice day.

    Vanu.

  • this song will go in history

  • A song about real life just like most of other John's song. That;s why he is appreciated and loved. He makes mainstream clowns like Dylan fade away.

  • This song can be redone all the world wants, but nothing beats his original voice.

  • sounds familiar but i've never heard it before... at least not him singing it.

  • @winggoddess

You are more likely to have heard Bonnie Raitt's version. Though John wrote it, hers got a lot of radio play.

  • fuc u your getting some of my music.via hs @ debs house love you sister

  • Added to My Favorites. What can you say about John Prine... His lyric creation is simply amazing and head of time. The song is soothing and relaxing from beginning to end. I do wish he did remastered this song in the studio as I prefer his older voice. John is among the unknown greats that society have no clue of.

Kids, time to learn. What you are hearing over the pop station in your local city is 99% untalented, autotuned 'musicians'. Its time for you to listen to what music is really about.

  • 'to believe in this livin'.. whoa this is true, make me one of those angels too

  • I loved the slide guitar in this song a lot! Beautiful version!

  • Wonderfully beautiful. The mandoln, or whatever that instrument is, & the slides adds so much. I love him and Bonnie singing this song, but WOW this is Great!!!! This is my favorite song of his, but it speaks to 20 years of lonliness in a 290 year marriage. I cried the first time I heard this. I would hear a few words ...nothing to talk about. This song helped give me the courage to finally leave. What a powerful song. Thank you so very much for this version!!! It is so beautiful!

  • He's just too good, too good :')

  • What a wonderful song

  • Such a great song and a great performance. The guy playing the slide guitar is a great player.

  • Been a fan since "72. Going to see him 6-10-11, Orphen Theatre L.A.. Prayers are answered.

  • @larrycchurch49 How was the show?

  • Just the best. Here comes my youth again.

  • Love John Prine. So wonderful.

  • Did I hear a cello?

  • i´m 15 and my friend hate those songs ...but i just love that guitarre and this man ^^

  • @MrsWalkingDead hey brother i hear ya. when were out in the field exposed to all the violence and killing and horrible bullshit that unfortunately comes with war we all listen to violent ass shit to help cope but sometimes its nice to sit back and just get a decent peace of mind goin on.

  • 10 people need a bitch slap.

  • just him, his guitar and his song.

  • comment pending crap from you tube.; why don't they just go the way of yahoo and kill their business already

  • Does anyone know what guitar he's playing? Martin D-28?

  • @van1980 Looks like an old D-28. BUT - If you're thinking about buying a Martin check out he D-16. I have one and love it.

  • Nice to hear this again...heard it from backstage the first time around.

    Really liking this YouTube. Heh

  • 8 dislikes? WTF? Have you lost your soul?

JP makes your heart smile and cry at the same time.....

  • @commando850norton no sense of timing?

  • Love this man. Love him.

  • just give me one thing, that i can hold on to

  • Is it just me, or is John starting to look more and more like Edward G. Robinson?

  • The great story teller! <3

  • John Prine is an amazing Song writer/performer. I've never seen an artist give as much as he does during his concerts.

  • I seen John Prine 2 years ago and he put on a great show. Everybody there was older than my parents but I loved it. Prime Prine!

  • You Tube and John Prine -- perfect.

  • Pure perfection. Thanks John.

  • the years go by ; no doubt about it :

  • Can't wait to see him tonight in Cincinnati!!

  • @11sunnywing how was he? i wanted to go so bad but had prior engagements!!

  • Oh my goodness! He evokes tears and laughter at the same time. The mark of a serious poet. Amazing!

  • Speechless as to what is displayed here. When it is beyond greatestness it ascends to the level of legendary.

  • Who's the mandolin player?

  • @alltheamputations Ronnie McCoury (Del's Boy)

  • he's a home-boy. his lyrics are timeless. his sincerety is unquestionable. and we country boys just think diffferently. we be the truly "laid-back" generation/gentleman

  • i love this song so much i'm getting a few of the lyrics tattooed on me.

  • This man is a folk god-Thanks John!

  • ..i really love this song :D and singer also~

  • If John Prine should ever come to Nelson in Lancashire, I hope he'd consider coming to my house for tea. I'd get some nice cakes in.

  • @sptfgpn What a great thought! He's in my town for a show tonight, & I'm going to go looking the streets for him!

  • Oooo My ----------- I never want to loose these beautiful musicians who ever will take their place? Love you John.... <3

  • I LOVE THE AUDIENCE! .But what is stunning 'this time' is the crazy best accoustic to frame the mona lisa. the michelangelo. the band, the feelings in each musician.. we cant believe how lucky we are.. we get to hear this and see him in small towns and bigger ones. (and come home in the evening..) Life has some fine points.. John is one fine 'case' in point.. thanks for such a great clear video share!

  • I wish an audience could shut up.

  • I love this man so much! He takes me away everytime I hear even just a clip of his sound.

  • 7 people thought dislike meant dis i like.

  • @MrCopperhead1861 - had to....can't believe anyone wouldn't love this

  • @AshGSam My Dad loved JP when I was growing up, this always make me grin. I remember boucing around in the jumpseat of our Ford Ranger in early '95, him blasting "It's A Big Old Goofy World" out the window. And I had Big Old Goofy Grin on my face the whole time. Amazing how a song just plops you right back in time. Dad and need to listen to some JP again for old times.

  • love...love ...love this!!!!! Brings back memories from the good days and times my now ex husband and I had back in our early years together. Bittersweet.

  • love...love ...love it!!!!!!

  • John Prine moves me. if you can sit still emotionless and listen to him, and watch him, you are inhuman. there is more 'real-ness' in that man than all of the pop artists of today combined.

  • Hmm I just found out about this guy. Maybe I am related to him. My last name being Prine and all.

  • @DanMarik and all what?

  • if dreams where lighting and desire thunder this house would of brunt down a long time ago

  • It's perfect

  • Some of the greatest lyrics" how the hell can a person etc" Saw him in Birmingham uk a few years ago BRILLIANT

  • @MrCynthia1942 my favorite part of the song...though the whole song is awesome. I remember playing Bonnie's version of this for my mother years ago (1987) on a road trip. She loved it!

  • Comment removed

  • John Prine is the one who said "that's for Bonnie Raitt"... probably because she made him some money on his song.

  • One Of My All Time Favorites Had the pleasure to see him 4or 5 years ago in south Bend In.. Up close and personal. He has so many great song and every one from the Beatles, ELVIS. and The Stones have done them

  • this song cripples me every time i hear it.

  • @ohemgeeadrienne yeah, sends tears floooding every time

  • this song cripples me every time

  • good ol' john prine

  • Best version ever. Nothing as moving as John's broken voice with just guitar, mandolin and Telecaster.

They shouldn't allow no other to sing this one!

  • @lilboyblue

    the telecaster is wicked

  • Who is playing the mandolin?? I love it.

  • Damn John, always got it

  • The other "talented guy" is Ronnie McCoury, son of bluegrass legend, Del McCoury. Ronnie provides a sweet intro.

  • @DaveRnBk ....hahaha...i always see him in john prine videos...always thought i recognized him from somewhere...now i know!

  • @DaveRnBk My God that was unbelievable.

  • This is John Prine after surgery on his throat and radiation.

Bob Dylan has highly praised him. He is one of the best in the industry.

  • god on earth.

  • Gettem John! the industry what a joke......Suit n tie guys looking for the next bottom line profit..keep doing what you do man! I learned that from dealing with the fishing industry.....Who consider the people as sheep...Keep playing the tunes that matter! AWESOME

  • @Rattlin12 that's funny. pretty sure the other talented guy in this video is wearing a suit and tie.

  • That's Jason Wilber on guitar.

  • i agree with indiana1fats - a treasure!

  • What a emotion ! he's a great one .....and the song....one of best ever.......from Como Lake , Italy

  • best song ever...

  • great song. was one of dad's favorites.

  • Better than god. Or at least more to the point.

  • God bless John Prine, he and all the other folk artists is what brought this country together with good hearted music and life hard lyrics he is a reall american...

  • At what point did the audience not realise that this song was Angel From Montgomery? The intro was played for at least a minute, so ther were clues. I went to see John in Nashville and Chatanooga 3 weeks ago, and was so irritated by the whooping and a hollering!

  • one of my favorite songs.

  • Gives me goose bumps. John Prine's voice is truly coming deep from his soul.

  • loved your comment 1peterz...that's exactly what he does...plants his feet, looks em in the eye and tells the truth...very fine...No bs..have loved john prine since he hit the stage back in the 70's...going to see him this week in portland.. what a treat.

  • John Prine,A ledgend in his own time

  • Great

  • You RULE John. Great to meet you at Carney's in LA............such a normal guy; just buyin' a burger. Right on.

    Long time Fan.

  • Damn... he just makes me smile!

  • John Prine expresses the most raw and authentic human spirit in song of anyone I've ever heard. Try hello in there or sam stone. They'll make you cry listening to them

  • I grew up listening to John Prine. Words cannot express how much I admire his songwriting talents, and how much I look up to him for all he's had the courage to say.

  • prine hits every word like a ball peen hammer hits smelted ivory

  • J'adore cette chanson !

  • He is a modest and incredibler human being ina world full of questionalble crap.

  • Absoluately love this man. America ceeds millions mor like him to srvive..

  • Life is good!

  • Seeing John play in Austin tonight. Yee-Ha!

  • It was an incredible show! Especially since I lucked out and got front row center seats thru the pre-sale! Life IS good!

  • In 2009 I saw Niel Young, Joel Plaskett, Disturbed, John Prine, AC/DC and The Stone Temple Pilots. John was the best, of all, and none of those shows disapointed either trust me. Hope he comes back to Saint John.

  • @Matty6983 ah i see we got another New Brunswicker! I got to see disturbed and AC/DC. Really wanted to see Neil Young, and i'm guessing John opened for him? woulda been nice to see

  • He played this last night in Red Bank, NJ, what an experience it was to be so close to such an amazing musician!!

  • @maremare9657 I can't imagine what that must have felt like. i just recently discovered his work (believe it or not) but that must've been a great experience to see him live playing this song...

  • This song is first in my "playlist" for a reason.

  • I just have to listen to this every now and then...it still moves me.

  • I hear ya!

  • and then.. there is that guitar.. Make me a rainbow.. well John sure did.

  • Anyone know who the electric player is?

  • Jason Wilbur. He's a stud.

  • shivers ..

  • ive loved him for years.....Prine is one of the greats I rank hm up there with the best songwriters ever.....hes a story teller a picture painter in three minutes and 100 words and 5 chords he will touch yer soul.....

  • John P. is one of our American treasures. No ifs/ands/buts.

  • @indiana1fats ,,why doesn't everyone see that?,,he is so talented ,,

  • Thank you for posting this song.

  • John Prine of Maywood,IL is recognized

as the father of the Texas singer/ song

    writer genre.

  • @ThunderBobtoU Hey john is comin to the Rialto in Joliet in March '10.. just saying..! cant wait.. Thanks for this great share..

  • John Prine is a great singer/songwriter, but not really underrated, at least not by the people in the industry. Johnny Cash, Kris Kristopherson, Willy Nelson et al give him credit as the best. Kristopherson once said "he is so good, we are going to have to break his fingers." He does in song what my father tried to convince me to do in life. Plant your feet, look them in the eye, and tell the truth.

  • You said what I couldn't . Well done man!

  • cuzz I'm really high...

  • its kind of white men blues ( without the distinct of skin color etc ) .

its from the heart and he really knows how to hit one straight into the heart ..

thats what i call music !

  • @1peterz well yup..........

  • @1peterz you can say that again ;)

  • @1peterz

    thank you for these comments

  • @1peterz wow I didn't know that, inspiring...

  • I have loved this song for years. Thank you, John Prine

  • "The years just flow by Like a broken down dam.".You betchum red rider! Cheers!

  • Whenever you need some inspiration or help through something put a John Prine album on.. Works everytime.

  • Is that Del McCourry's son on Mandolin?

  • no definitely not

  • I think John Prine is one of the most underrated singer/songwriters of his and our time.

  • agreed.

  • Agreed. I'm just discovering (re-discovering? He was probably there in the background forgotten somewhere, but Youtube has brought him to the foreground for me ) him and this song, and "Hello in there" are sheer genius.

  • "How the hell can a person go to work in the morning, and come home in the evening, and have nothing to say."

    Sigh.......

    This song moves me.

  • This performance reminds me of Tom Waits singing "Train Song". Such a beautiful and heartfelt mood.

  • john prine, my daughter will never forget seeing this. Cassandra was 5. Loving life already....

  • Big Old Hearts dancing in my eyes. ;-)

  • yeah that song wasn't written by Bonnie Rait, it was written by John Prine - that announcer sounds like he's got his head up his ass

  • That was John Prine saying "That's for Bonnie Rait"

  • thanks for all of your downloads. check out this link on youtube, greatgrooveband2009@PFF. My daughter is amongst the band of children, I'm loving it. Buck Mountain and Keep a knockin'

  • @StoneyLaTroy dumbass.

  • @StoneyLaTroy look who's got their head up their ass now.

  • Right at the end did the announcer really say, "Mr Bonnie Raitt?" Did I hear that correctly?

  • "That's for Bonnie Raitt"

  • Love to hear John Prine and Steve Young play accoustic unplugged show together

  • John Prine not only writes and and performs great and original music, he presents it in an extremely professional mannner. Look at how his band dresses.

  • I absolutely love this song, and all forms of folk music.
