great video, im glad i didnt see more of andys family suffering at the beginning cause everytime i see it it makes me kinda sad n i really feel sorry for them.. of course andy will ever be the legendary fighter in our hearts but it always seems to me like he also was a good friend, father n great husband to his wife, so i feel like we didnt lose "only" a great sportsman - we lost another good human to something which he couldnt fight even that he tried hard, life really sux sometimes. RIP Andy
Andy Hug (September 7, 1964 - August 24, 2000) was a renowned Kyokushin Karate and kickboxing fighter from Wohlen, Switzerland. He died at the age of 35 from Leukemia in Japan. He won the K-1 World Grand Prix Championship in 1996 and was runner up in 1997 and 1998. Hug is widely credited for helping K-1's popularity world-wide, and is one of the most respected and idolized figures in combat sports history. In Japan he was given the name "Blue-Eyed Samurai".
Axe kicks are usable in MMA if you have good timing. He wouldn't have used them as frequently, but it's still possible especially against a stand-up fighter (I recall Crocop using one). In any case, Andy was a smart fighter who I'm sure could adapt his style to better suit MMA rules.
Terrific fighter. However, in MMA he would have had to drop the axe kicks. They worked well for him because he was fighting under stand-up rules. With axe-kicks like that in modern MMA you'd get yourself into the bad end of the ground-and-pound stick on a regular basis.
of his massive arsenal of karate strikes the axe kick is the only one that he wouldnt be able to use too often, but it is still usable under the right conditions. spinning back kicks are used all the time by georges st-pierre, and andy's spinning heel kicks would devastate people. there is no one in mma today in any weight class with the striking ability of OSU. no one.
