I'm not sure why, but I think Domingo is definitely my favourite opera singer. Particularly in these darker roles, Don Jose, Cavaradossi, Otello, Tristan - he performs superbly. 5 stars
Placido is a God. I saw him live as Jose in LA about a decade ago. Even then people were saying he was past his prime, but he outshined anyone else on stage that night. Check out my humble recording of the flower aria. I love comments
@MissJimipuma Ti consiglio quello di Carreras tra i due ke hai citato..... è molto più indicato al ruolo..... Sentilo( da escludere però la registrazione al Met del 1987)...Ciao
@jchambers1991 I do agree with kingston and I think that you are really dumb for saying that this is a average performance, because it is anything but that....
This is a wonderful!!! Placido when he was young and intense. If you want to hear this sung well live, listen to EMMANUEL DI VILLAROSA sing this. He sings the B flat with the most amazing mezza voce and sounds similar to Domingo and Carreras, but with more control. The video was recorded live and is an obviously bootleg, but the audio is GREAT!!! More people should know of this great, great tenor. I heard sing this live last week in Germany, and he was just marvelous.
Still nobody (in my eyes) has surpassed Jussi Bjorling in this aria. Bjorlings voice is more intense and on fire through low-middle - and high register.
I'm sorry, this is just the best. Domingo is my favorite DJ and EO is just about the fiercest Carmen ever. What I would give to see these two in action in 78. Legendary.
Maybe the most touching and vulnerable aria for tenor ever written. Not as much testosteron as Puccini, but a wonderful lack of too much sugar coating, like Gounod or Massenet....
I like Kleiber's conducting style, not just his tempi but his look on the podium. He also resembles dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov somewhat.
One of Domingo's best performances on stage. We used to have this production on Betamax, but that was years ago. Everyone was great in the cast, and Zefirelli had a great production.
They both are MAGNIFICENT! I just can't stop listening to them in this Carmen production! Their singing, with their dark-coloured voices, as well as their acting is just OUT OF THIS WORLD!
es excellente increible..!! tal vez una de sus mejores interpretaciones que me ha tocado ver .. y tecnicamente hablando impresionate de los mejores agudos q le escuchado a placido..!! bravo !!
I'm probably ignorant but this is too pretentious for me, maybe because it is obvious that he is trying to be excellent, and he is, don't get me wrong, but I just can't help it. When I am aware of the singer singing a song that is not my ideal of artistic experience.
Domingo really acts, knows his characters well. Try watching Otello - you see him crumble over the course of the opera. I've seen him to it at the Met 3 times. Always moving. Saw Carmen 6 times. Bravo PD!
I'm really sad that Carlos Kleiber conducted so few pieces of music and he worked hardly with Domingo (Carmen, Otello, La Traviata). Fortunately if they worked together it was everytime a overwhelming success. Those two artists together is like combining a beautiful piece of jewellery with the rarest gems on this earth.
Thanks for uploading a version of Carmen which should be bought even if you don't like Obrastzova.
Domingo actually drools at 2:33.... :-/ he was really into it.
But WOW, this may be the best live interpretation of this I have seen. Domingo is amazing here.... this is the first performance I have seen where I actually got lost in it for a minute and was believing that it was real and Domingo meant what he said. Wow.
Well I listened to all videos by all OS of this on YT and this is the one I chose to send to a friend - even out of Domingo's other recordings of it. She loves it as much as I do.
What can you say about Carlos Kleiber? Look at the subtlety and direction of his phrasing in the intro, the gentle and incendiary support of Domingo during the body of the aria, the miraculous dialogue he creates between singer and celli during "O Mon Carmen," and his deeply felt wind-down during the postlude. Just the best, the best...
I couldn't agree more. It doesn't get much better than this. Two accomplished musicians! Listen to the phrasing when he sings Carmen! Je Taime! However, it would have helped if he looked at her when he says he loves her!
Haunting to say in the least.

Carmen, just after Jose gets out of jail and tells Carmen how he saved the flower she gave him.
Lakme is sung in French as well, but the music is very different
