  • Haunting to say in the least.

  • Placido is fantastic singing Don Jose in the plenitude of his voice. Also great was Carlos kleiber conducting.

  • This is the best "Flower Song" I have found so far. Thanks for posting!

  • Mario Del Monaco.

  • LOVE HIM!

  • I'm not sure why, but I think Domingo is definitely my favourite opera singer. Particularly in these darker roles, Don Jose, Cavaradossi, Otello, Tristan - he performs superbly. 5 stars

  • Placido is a God. I saw him live as Jose in LA about a decade ago. Even then people were saying he was past his prime, but he outshined anyone else on stage that night. Check out my humble recording of the flower aria. I love comments

  • ho il cuore spaccato a metà.... Don Jose di Domingo o Don Jose di Jon Vickers? Oh Cielo..... aiuto!!!

Senti a Bjorling. Credo che fosse il migliore.

  • Bravo! Bravo! Yes, the best performance ever.

  • So beautiful

  • plácido es Don José

  • @jchambers1991 I do agree with kingston and I think that you are really dumb for saying that this is a average performance, because it is anything but that....

  • The best performance of this aria ever

  • Maestro grazie

  • This is a wonderful!!! Placido when he was young and intense. If you want to hear this sung well live, listen to EMMANUEL DI VILLAROSA sing this. He sings the B flat with the most amazing mezza voce and sounds similar to Domingo and Carreras, but with more control. The video was recorded live and is an obviously bootleg, but the audio is GREAT!!! More people should know of this great, great tenor. I heard sing this live last week in Germany, and he was just marvelous.

  • Very good version by Domingo.

Still nobody (in my eyes) has surpassed Jussi Bjorling in this aria. Bjorlings voice is more intense and on fire through low-middle - and high register.

  • I'm sorry, this is just the best. Domingo is my favorite DJ and EO is just about the fiercest Carmen ever. What I would give to see these two in action in 78. Legendary.

  • The orchestra is MAGNIFICENT!!! What sound, what depth and colour. Timing is perfect as always with Maestro Kleiber.

  • Domingo Semplicemente magnifico e Carlos Kleiber emozionante.

  • Kleiber conducting! A genius.

  • Magnificent, Sublime. .Bizet and Domingo for ever.

  • What's the one song, I think it's called 'Flower Song' but it's sung by two Italian ladies.

  • its the duet from lakme. just type in: flower duet lakme and you'll find it

  • Hey thanks a lot! It's such a beautiful song.

  • Carmen, just after Jose gets out of jail and tells Carmen how he saved the flower she gave him.

Lakme is sung in French as well, but the music is very different

  • That's from Lakme. Used in the British Airways commercial.

  • Look closely and you'll see him drool at 2:33... yuck =P

    Good rendition though.

  • Maybe the most touching and vulnerable aria for tenor ever written. Not as much testosteron as Puccini, but a wonderful lack of too much sugar coating, like Gounod or Massenet....

  • Incredible!

  • THE BEST TENOR FOR THIS ARIA

  • A golden moment ... PERFECT interpratation .

    Thank you , Dave

  • Definitly... what a great moment in music. Thank you for upload.

  • I like Kleiber's conducting style, not just his tempi but his look on the podium. He also resembles dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov somewhat.

One of Domingo's best performances on stage. We used to have this production on Betamax, but that was years ago. Everyone was great in the cast, and Zefirelli had a great production.

  • très bel opera

    interpretation réussie

  • vmffkcleh ehaldrh wlsWK wkfgksekrh todrkrgkqslek!~!~

  • They both are MAGNIFICENT! I just can't stop listening to them in this Carmen production! Their singing, with their dark-coloured voices, as well as their acting is just OUT OF THIS WORLD!

  • 78 was a good vintage!

  • I am in tears now... and yelling "Bravo" like the audience did (30 years ago)!!!

  • I'm probably ignorant but this is too pretentious for me, maybe because it is obvious that he is trying to be excellent, and he is, don't get me wrong, but I just can't help it. When I am aware of the singer singing a song that is not my ideal of artistic experience.

  • Domingo really acts, knows his characters well. Try watching Otello - you see him crumble over the course of the opera. I've seen him to it at the Met 3 times. Always moving. Saw Carmen 6 times. Bravo PD!

  • @pdfan33036 He is one of those people who is helping to dispel the myth that opera singers are bad actors, and for that I must thank the chap.

  • I don't like this opera, the first time I've heard it I was musically confused and felt almost nothing. Sorry, ''Carmen'' lovers.

  • too bad for you. All you've noted was how long your attention span is. Or should I say short?

  • Yes, short. But such is the Brave New World. Get used to whole populations of philistines.

  • What is he thinking about when the applause goes on ?

  • Really good, chapeaux

  • Magnificent.

  • on the dvd of this version the applause after this aria seems to go on forever. Great rendition

  • I'm really sad that Carlos Kleiber conducted so few pieces of music and he worked hardly with Domingo (Carmen, Otello, La Traviata). Fortunately if they worked together it was everytime a overwhelming success. Those two artists together is like combining a beautiful piece of jewellery with the rarest gems on this earth.

Thanks for uploading a version of Carmen which should be bought even if you don't like Obrastzova.

  • WOW

  • I had the great pleasure to meet Domingo. He is my hero!! I love him in this role!

  • Non ci son parole per descriverlo.

    Bravo Tenore!

  • Domingo actually drools at 2:33.... :-/ he was really into it.

But WOW, this may be the best live interpretation of this I have seen. Domingo is amazing here.... this is the first performance I have seen where I actually got lost in it for a minute and was believing that it was real and Domingo meant what he said. Wow.

  • Yeah, Domingo is greath!

  • Well I listened to all videos by all OS of this on YT and this is the one I chose to send to a friend - even out of Domingo's other recordings of it. She loves it as much as I do.

  • Greath!!! Thanks for this video.

  • God bless him!

  • Domingo is one of the best artists in history of opera.

  • Yes, He is my favourite ever.

  • Carlos Kleiber Rocks!!! Genius!! Domingo and Obratzova are not bad either!

  • Genio Domingo!!!!

  • exellente interpretation .bravo

  • now that, my friends, is what a flower aria needs to sound like. wow et bravo.

  • beautiful...no one does carmen and tosca like domingo does

  • Hee Hee. I am not touching that one . . .

    :-)

  • This is one of the most beautiful renditions of the Flower Song I have ever heard. Gorgeous!

  • Very Very good tenor and awesome opera. This and the Magic Flute are my favourites!!

  • Excellent recording; five stars!

  • Beautifull!

  • I Love Placido Domingo. ♥

  • What can you say about Carlos Kleiber? Look at the subtlety and direction of his phrasing in the intro, the gentle and incendiary support of Domingo during the body of the aria, the miraculous dialogue he creates between singer and celli during "O Mon Carmen," and his deeply felt wind-down during the postlude. Just the best, the best...

  • AMEN

  • I couldn't agree more. It doesn't get much better than this. Two accomplished musicians! Listen to the phrasing when he sings Carmen! Je Taime! However, it would have helped if he looked at her when he says he loves her!
