  • Classic folk song "Dink's Song" sung by the great Fred Neil with that beautiful album cover photograph. Great argument for vinyl'

  • A lot of his songs were adaptable for folk rock arrangements like the Byrds did w/ Dylan.

  • Magical, rich and warm. Fred was truly a one-off. There will never be another one quite like him!

  • His voice vibrates my soul.

  • @Cervicconstruction , so beautiful said

  • What a voice. Soul, soul, soul. Blues, blues, blues. One of the most respected singer/song writers in the village days. He escaped the temptations of new york and ended up working in dolphin protection. Over 45 years listening to him and he never fails to move me. Fashions in music come and go and many from the 60's turned out to be only of their time. Fred is timeless.

  • @DougStoneent

I couldn't have said it better!

  • The child he embraces is truly beautiful. Is that his own child? I love his vocalization, it is unique to him. Is this man still living? His voice is like the deep purr of a large cat.

  • @boilerplate7 She was his daughter, her mom and her lived in The Bronx for a bit, they called Fred ,the Giraffe, because he was so tall and freckled great gone days!.

    Eddie Black

  • This song will forever remind me of my Greenwich Village Days...1961-62. Freddy was in love with my beautiful, blond roommate...he wore those broke down red boots ....Tim Hardin ....Dylan...Dave Van Ronk.......the Cafe Wha..The Ketltle of Fish....The Playhouse Cafe......the Night Owl....and the times and music were extraordinary....those amazing days are gone forever....

  • @sohooded Did you know all these great songwriters ? Dylan, Hardin and so on?

  • @BluesYourAss You know, Tim Hardin was my boyfriend for awhile in 1962, I met him when we both worked at The Playhouse Cafe......also, my roommate and I lived across the hall from Dave Van Ronk when Dylan was living with him..but never saw or met Dylan there. I knew Fred Neil and many of the others. It was the folk scene on Third and Macdougal in 1962-63....everyone was friends...

  • @sohooded That's really more than awesome ;)

  • @BluesYourAss Yeah. I have to say that the Sixties in general was the most amazing time in terms of space travel, clothes, music, style, politcal expression, etc....and I feel so lucky to have been there and experienced these memorable times and people.. Of course, many of them are gone now, but I'll always remember those precious, special memories. Are you a musician? Or are you a fan of the any of the people mentioned?

  • @sohooded I'm collecting records mostly, tons of good stuff but I also play a little music (Guitar, Bass) :)

  • ahhh....

  • If I make it to Heaven then I'm sure the angels will all sound like Fred Neil, his voice was what Heaven must sound like!

  • great artist

  • unbelievable to hear Fred Neil again. What a voice. what a song writer. First heard him visiting NYC in 1967-I was young (19)naive and he totally blew me away. God bless you Fred.

  • Najpiękniejszy utwór świata.

  • So beautiful!! Thanks so much!

  • So beautiful! Thank you!

  • One of the most beautiful and moving songs ever recorded, the same goes for Little Bit of Rain and his version of The Water is Wide from the Bleecker & MacDougal album

  • @rtt02

    I agree! :)

  • love this tune. It helped me through some tough times in my life...

  • I was about 19 or 20 when I first heard this song. All these many years later it still sounds great.

  • haha I've been looking for the original, well not the original but an early version of this song since I heard Jeff Buckley do it on live at Sin-e'

    Good stuff

  • Thanks for posting this - sounds like you pulled it from vinyl? I bought the collection "The Many Sides of Fred Neil" - this is on it, but I don't think they used the most up-to-date digital. It sounds great, but a bit "cold," like some of the early cd recordings.

  • what a voice!

  • Wonderful interpretation of the song!

Listening to Fred's singing in this song also sheds some light on why Tim Buckley started singing in a low register the way he did.

  • Never heard this song. thx for turning me on to it. Strong voice

  • immortal

  • I was upset that a freind had given me something and then asked for it back.Seemed rather strange and I was somewhat pissed with him till I dialed up ole Niel here and he put it into perspective for me.If my freind needed that to make him happy than in giving it back it will make me happy.

I remembered that we come in with nothing and we leave with nothing. All we have is those around us who make us whole.

  • @Cervicconstruction

    hey man, no one cares

  • @arigatomrrobato Hey don't taze me Bro!!!!

  • @Cervicconstruction Beautiful.

  • @Cervicconstruction very nice.

  • A stunning song. Just leaves me silent when it's over.

  • someone needs to post That's the bag I'm in

  • i know, that song has been in my head forever

  • tjohnn good news some one has.

  • YESS, Jeff buckley did a cover of this on the legacy edition of Live at Sin-E'.

But it called it Dinks song, so happy to have found the original

  • This tune and The Dolphins are two of my favorite Fred Neil songs from way back. Just beautiful in melody and lyric.

He never reached the fame of his peers, but his tune, Everybody's Talking, was a big hit (for someone else!).

  • my favorite fred neil song, and i think the favorite of more than a few people i once knew...aah such memories!

thanks so much for posting this!

  • Vin Scelsa just played it. What a magnificent voice! Brings me to tears.

  • We need more voices like Fred's. Where are they?

  • I know! I was just saying that. it's all britney and american idol.

  • There are many ways to bring down a society. One of them is to reduce the arts to mediocrity...or worse.

  • The mediocrity is in reference to Britney and the like.

  • @35mm35 - I'm not doggin' you about this, but if there were more voices like Fred's we wouldn't appreciate them - I guess it's the fact that some voices are exceptional that moves us, no? I see references to Tim Buckley posted here - same thing with him. Nina Simone, too.

  • I can see why you say that. We had a number of exceptional voices in the 60's and 70's. Most of them were songwriters, too. Feliciano, Lightfoot, Denver, Neil, O'Keefe, Taylor, Browne,Nelson, Haggard,

  • @TeeKay19 , you could be right. Something to do with scarcity, perhaps.

  • @35mm35 Check out Tindersticks!

  • @BluesYourAss, I'll check that out soon. Thanks for the tip.

  • This jewel is virtually unknown. A hidden treasure only Fred Neil fans know about. But this could be a good thing - the power of this song may be too much for the ordinary citizen.
