Ruffian was the queen of the fillies and Landulace doesnt have a title but that doesnt mean that she isnt just a good..
yeah to me ruffian was and is the best filly ever to set 4 hooves on a race track and the only 2 others that even come close to her are Eight Belles and of course Landulace..
landulace beat secretariats record
ruffian smashed his record and records every time she raced, n on every track she raced on
Eight Belles is nowhere near Ruffian. More like Rachel Alexandra. So Eight Belles got SECOND in the race. Theres been 3 other fillies wh've actually run.
and just because she came second doesnt mean that 'big brown' was a better horse... he came 9th in one of his races and eight belles never placed that badly.... and in every race belles won she won by a big lead.... just like landaluce and ruffian.... like i said the only FILLY'S who even come close to ruffian are landaluce and eight belles!
@queenluciaa just because she won by 20 lengths twice.... doesnt mean shes better than eight belles, n btw i found out that eight belles ankles started to cave in as she was going into the strech which means she was still racing down the strech with half caved in ankles, that was said by the veternarian that treated her and by other jockeys that were racing beside her... and incase you didnt watch the race properly she was easily catching up to the lead horse and then thats when it happened.
Your basing logic off hype. Rachel A. has the most decisive 3 yo. campaign for any 3 yo filly EVER. She is much better than Eight Belles. She even beat her time in the Fantasy Stakes. She even beat RUFFIANS time in the Mother Goose!
@queenluciaa that doesnt matter ruffian still had a faster time! RA mother goose time was 1:46.33 and Ruffians was 1:41.02 and if RA was the better horse she would of beaten ruffians TIME aswell.... ruffian ran a 12 furlong race in 2:08.10 and thats the fastest any filly has ever run a 12 furlong race.
in all her 10 races (except MR) she alwasy won by over 8 lengths and equalled or smashed track or stakes records... RA only won 5 races above 8 lengths n 7 won under 8 lengths and 2nd 5 times!
Your wrong. Rachel Alexandra has the speed record for the MG Stakes at 1 1/8 m. She has 1:46:33, Ruffian had 1:47:80. Don't get your facts from wikipedia.
Once again you base your facts off some cheesy ESPN film. Ruffian was whipped time to time actually, she was always pushed in her races. If you actually read a BOOK about her instead of watching some Hollywood fairytail movie, you'd know that. But you don't.
@queenluciaa if you actually watch her races you would see that she was NEVER whipped, except in the hot n nasty race and she was NEVER pushed, she did what she did on her own accord, because she loved to run, when she broke down in the match race vazquez tried to pull her up, but she wouldnt stop!
i dont base my facts off the film, i havnt even seen the film, because its much better just watching the real ruffian run!
get your facts right before you start mouthing off about stuff you dont no!
@xxcrystlecityxx I agree RA only beat one record and Ruffian has been in lead all the races she would smoke RA and Z the only horse thats good enough for Ruffian is Secretariat but my picks is for Ruffian but i still love RA and Z why should i hate a beatiful creature
@johnofohu123 Are you kidding me..Rachel came close to breaking many records under wraps..stop the horse bashing..enjoy the ones we have while they are here as with Landaluce they can be gone in a second..play nice!
@queenluciaa Ruffian died not ever knowing what its like to be second or what its like to have a horse infront of her....
RA had the whip used on her....
and ruffian never everrr had the whip used on her, she was always hand raced because whitely got angry when the whip was even thought of being used on ruffian, and ruffian could of easily won the mother goose by a larger margin but if you actually watched it you would see that the jockey held her back until the stretch and just let her 'jog'
@queenluciaa my 1st post was about ruffian and you couldnt even compare this rachel alexandra to ruffian or landaluce so you just decided to insult eight belles and ruffian was a way better faster and stronger race horse then RA anyways
I am opposed to censorship, and am not weak hearted when it comes to some of the stuff I read from people on the internet. I am also happy when people not only watch horse racing, but are enthusiastic about it. However, for anyone who has visited this video over the past year, you will know there was a debate that turned ridiculous concerning the merits of Landaluce vs. Ruffian. About 500 comments worth. Go figure.
I let it continue because it's my nature, and it wasn't causing harm. However, I think that it had gotten to the point where it might be causing problems for people, so I have chosen to delete all of the arguments. I purposely didn't turn off comments, because I really don't like the idea of that. If you want to thank me, great. If you want to call me a douche bag, great. Just do it mentally and don't add the comment.
I have a hard time believing Ruffian or any other 2 year old horse could have beat landaluce that day.
Ruffian was a great horse but she ran against fillies. even the match race against Foolish Pleasure would not have proved anything because he wasn't the superhorse poeple have made him out to be. I would have liked to have seen her race against Forego and Wajima in the fall races that year i doubt a 3 year old filly could have beat either of them the way they ran that fall
that grand canyon was something else, he had alot of talent- a big long striding son of fappiano..it was sad that lukas lost grand canyon and landaluce so young, although lukas had plenty of top horses in the 80s and 90s..landaluce obviously had immense speed and talent, though it still would be hard for me to compare any filly to ruffian..ruffian also truely wasnt able to show how great she could have been, just like landaluce..imagine seeing ruffian as a 4yo and late 3yo years, amazing horses.
"it was sad that lukas lost grand canyon and landaluce so young"
I actually look at that a different way. To me, it is sad that guys like Lukas get their hands on horses like Grand Canyon and Landaluce, or any horse for that matter.
Lukas was and is an equines worst enemy. Worst nitemare. To guys like Lukas, horses are just a piece of meat, a machine they drill into the ground. Some will make it and others will fall to the wayside and be quickly replaced. That is life living in Lukas land
I agree dahoss. Wayne Lukas was to horseracing what Balco was to baseball. His 2yr old fillies frequently physically resembled 3yr old colts, and it wasn't because they ate higher quality oats. Not surprisingly, many wound up having brilliant yet very short careers.
It's my understanding that Lukas was extremely hard on the human athletes that he was a head basketball coach of for years before training horses.
So I can only imagine that he brought that same tough drill drill drill mentality to the equine world when he started training QHs.
I think Lukas is the Madonna of horse racing. She brought sleeze to the pop culture and now millions of young girls emulate her, while he started the trend of total disregard of the horse that we see so much of today.
I believe that she would have ended up the greatest filly in history, by far. She is now enjoying life up in Horse Heaven with her father and brothers Swale, Capote, and Slew O' Gold.
A great great filly and what excitement there was that year in the racing world with Landaluce on the West Coast and Princess Rooney on the East. Of course, we'll never know how great she could have been; could very well have been the equal of Ruffian, but I doubt she would have surpassed Ruffian. Remember, Ruffian set a stakes record or tied a track record every time out. She equaled the track record at Belmont for 5 1/2 furlongs her first time out. Some two-year old filly!
Thanks for the great memory of a truely great filly. I was there that day and witnessed this amazing performance in person. She was one of the greats. I believe her time was an astounding 1:08 flat.
Wow what a great filly! I'll have to look her up. That's so rare to see a horse kick like that so effortlessly in the stretch with plenty more to spare :) Thx for posting this video. Without it I would have never known how great this filly was. Long live the legacy of Seattle Slew!!!
She could very well have ended up the single greatest filly of all time if she had not died so tragically. She is up in Horse Heaven now with her father and her brother Swale.
Many thanks for posting this. I was devastated by Landaluce's death. She was from Seattle Slew's first crop and of course you wonder how successful a great horse will be at stud. With Slew there was a freak offspring immediately in Landaluce, a star by mid-summer as a 2-year-old. It would have been fascinating to see how you would have done stretching out, and perhaps trying the colts.
Simply the fastest horse I have ever seen run live. I was there that day and at many other big races across the country over the years. She was absolutely unbelievable!!!! Too bad she is mostly forgotten. Thank you for posting this video!
I too remember watching her live and in person. As it often is with "freaks" she made it look easy, with an unmistakable blend of grace and power. Yes, Lukas uses his young horses too hard.
Has he ever trained a older champion? But
I've read that losing Landaluce to an infection
broke his heart, Lukas was cradling her head
when she died. And he promised himself he
wouldn't let himself fall in love with a horse
ever again. Her death is a big part of the
reason he views them as money making
machines vs. fellow creatures.
