Actually Pocklington (according to the book "Gretzky's Tears") tried to at least keep Gretzky in Canada by trying to work out a trade with the Vancouver but bottom line was (i think) Peter wanted that 15 Million (american) that Bruce McNall offered i really don't think he cared what player he got in return because at the time(88) only Mario Lemieux or possibly Steve Yzerman was close close to being equal to Gretzky ...the players and coach wanted more cups Peter just wanted to get out of debt.
@shallehalle Gretkzy is greater than Lebron. If you are educated you will agree. The 22 year prediction you have will probably never come to pass. Lebron is insanely good but so is Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant and at least 10 other players who are top notch. Gretkzy was in his own world. Lebron shares the world of MJ and Kobe Bryant. Gretkzy lives on his own planet and his numbers prove it.
@shallehalle Sadly the cavs didn't have the team to help Lebron like the Oilers had around Gretzky, so without that and the 4 championships before he left, Lebron ain't ever gonna be mentioned in the same breath as Gretzky.

The Oilers did win a Cup two years after that trade (that's just how good that whole team was), but Gretzky probably could've had 7 or 8 Cups if he wasn't traded.
Also, Gretzky never won one in L.A. They had that series with the Canadiens with the infamous Marty McSorley stick incident, but Gretzky never made the finals after that. So I believe it worked out for Edmonton.
