sadly we dont have a baseball team. theres only one team in new jersey, and thats the NJ Devils. We do have a basketball team, but the Nets are a disgrace to basketball so i don't count them as being a part of NJ.

As I'm sure must have bee pointed out by now, the title for this video is not correct. It was NOT a semi-final game. It was a MEDAL ROUND game. The medal round was round-robin in 1980, so there was no such thing as a "semi-final" or a "final."
USA may not have finished fourth had they lost to Finland. Depending on the goal differential of the Sweden USSR game, they could have finished with either a Silver, a Bronze, or no medal. Because the results of the USSR/Finland, and the USA/Sweden games from the previous round robin round carried over, had USA lost to FInland, and Sweden lost to the USSR (as they did) then it would have come down to goal differential, because the two teams tied 2-2 in their meeting

We won gold at Lake Placid and Squaw Valley with amateur teams that were in no way on paper anywhere compettive with the other nations. In Salt Lake I believe Canada used more pros than the US team did, or at least had them together longer as a team than we did. Hey, Im always glad to see Canada on the podium and wont deny the tradition of Hockey greatness in Canada. However, say what you may, the Miracle on Ice was unstoppable and any "shoulda woulda coulda" by Canadian team is pointless.

If all the best players had been at the tournament, which is the way it's supposed to be, then the outcome would have been different. USA has never won since the best players have been allowed to compete (since 1998 in Nagano, Japan). And the scare was just that, a scare. The best players from Switzerland had a gutsy performance against our best.
technically this wasn't a semi final game. they played a round robin with the top two of each of the two groups. the u.s. had tied sweden in the first game of the medal round play and beat the russians. so after they beat the russians, they were 1-0-1, ussr was 1-1-0 and sweden and finland were both 0-1-1. had the united states lost to finland in the final game, they would've received bronze because they would have a worse record than the russians and lose the tie breaker to the fins.
The US didn't play Sweden in the medal round. Games against the opponents that were in their pool play prior to the medal round, were carried over. US and Sweden tied in the first game of the tournament and it was carried over to the medal round. As was the USSR vs. Finland game won by the USSR 4-2.

You haven't seen the movie. See the movie and the interviews afterward and the documentary as well, and I don't think you'll think it was luck anymore. It was a very carefully planned and executed strategy of working harder, playing as a team, leveraging strengths, and exploiting weaknesses. Was luck part of it? Maybe a little. But to write the whole thing off as luck would be a disservice to Coach Herb Brooks and the American team. Watch the movie and see what you think.
It may have been more than luck. The Soviet team is generally acknowledged to have had better players, but the American team played like team players, at least according the to account in the movie, "Miracle." Great movie, by the way. Check it out if you get a chance. It gives more insight into how the American team won it.
The Russians were too good of a team to get beaten by luck. It was more about them getting outcoached than anything else. That and they underestimated their opponent.

USA beat USSR and Finland and tied with Sweden.
USSR lost to USA, but beat both Finland and Sweden.
Had USA lost to Finland, USSR would've won the gold.

Although I detect a hint of sarcasm I'm going to say thank you for congratulating me on our first golds on home soil. But I must correct you on your statement "The US home advantage has always enabled them to rise to the occasion", as it appears you have Alzheimers. Back in '02, with the best players from Canada and the US battling for gold in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Canadians gave the US a womping on home ice that Canada, at least, will never forget. I hope that carries us to victory tonight!

We won gold at Lake Placid and Squaw Valley with amateur teams that were in no way on paper anywhere compettive with the other nations. In Salt Lake I believe Canada used more pros than the US team did, or at least had them together longer as a team than we did. Hey, Im always glad to see Canada on the podium and wont deny the tradition of Hockey greatness in Canada. However, say what you may, the Miracle on Ice was unstoppable and any "shoulda woulda coulda" by Canadian team is pointless.

That's my point exactly, so thank you for strenghening my position! If all the best players had been at the tournament, which is the way it's supposed to be, then the outcome would have been different. USA has never won since the best players have been allowed to compete (since 1998 in Nagano, Japan). And the scare was just that, a scare. The best players from Switzerland had a gutsy performance against our best.

technically this wasn't a semi final game. they played a round robin with the top two of each of the two groups. the u.s. had tied sweden in the first game of the medal round play and beat the russians. so after they beat the russians, they were 1-0-1, ussr was 1-1-0 and sweden and finland were both 0-1-1. had the united states lost to finland in the final game, they would've received bronze because they would have a worse record than the russians and lose the tie breaker to the fins.

The US didn't play Sweden in the medal round. Games against the opponents that were in their pool play prior to the medal round, were carried over. US and Sweden tied in the first game of the tournament and it was carried over to the medal round. As was the USSR vs. Finland game won by the USSR 4-2.

You haven't seen the movie. See the movie and the interviews afterward and the documentary as well, and I don't think you'll think it was luck anymore. It was a very carefully planned and executed strategy of working harder, playing as a team, leveraging strengths, and exploiting weaknesses. Was luck part of it? Maybe a little. But to write the whole thing off as luck would be a disservice to Coach Herb Brooks and the American team. Watch the movie and see what you think.

It may have been more than luck. The Soviet team is generally acknowledged to have had better players, but the American team played like team players, at least according the to account in the movie, "Miracle." Great movie, by the way. Check it out if you get a chance. It gives more insight into how the American team won it.

Now, the USSR in those years was able to keep American imperialism at bay, there was an equilibrium of power and both sides kept the scale equal and USSR was in great shape. After collapse, American imperialism spread to Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. American democracy was also lost to corporatism.

At that time, the Olympics had a different format, in which the head-to-head record between top 4 teams (USSR, USA, Sweden and Finland) decided the medals.
USA beat USSR and Finland and tied with Sweden.
USSR lost to USA, but beat both Finland and Sweden.
Had USA lost to Finland, USSR would've won the gold.
