Actually in alot of places in Europe, you can't marry 1st cousins. In the US, anything 2nd cousin or greater is all right to marry.

There are some countries it's okay to marry cousins, but it's largely in the countries that was always okay. Europe tended to trend away from that when they started realizing about birth defects popping up from marrying someone very close in relationship. That's really the only reason it's frowned upon.
