NICE find! the square nail is on the one of two sides that are parallel, if you turn it 90 degrees it will have a slight angle which you can use to raise/lower the string height, depending on which direction you install it! Agree totally on the hemp! Also, who is that in the pic? Looks like family, good on ya bro, for sharing, thanks.
Sam thanks for filming this fun story. How can people have a dislike to this wonderful story you just told? It boggles my mind. Rock on my friend. Big thumbs up.
instruments always seem to have a story to be told, really cool find. and i know the facts, i drive a diesel truck five days a week, and its fairly infuriating knowing rudolph diesel did not at all intend my truck to run off of petroleum products.
Hey, this could be a potential gold mine you got there, if you were to contact a company called "fretted americana"(they have thier own youtube channel with my all time favorite guitarist PHIL X!!!!) and tell them youve got a 125 year old guitar, they might buy it off you, i remember they had one with the "very first pick guard" and this guitar looks far older than the one they had, it could be thousands or hundreds of thousand dollars worth here! Or a peice of junk:P
It looks like an old W.B. Tilton guitar from the late 1800s. That is one of the oldest metal tailpieces ever made. Don't put heavy gauge strings on it--stay with the light gauge or even the 'silk and steel'strings. It has that true old "Delta" tone alright!
Square nails can be roughly dated. If it looks blacksmith hammered, 1700's. If machine stamped, and ridges where the nail tears away from the stock are on the same side of the nail, late 1800's. If the ridges are diagonally across from each other, because the stamping had to flip the stock with each cut, early 1800's. Just thought I'd toss this in!! (Not that the nail and the guitar are the same age)
Well i'm sorry haters but the tape will come off idiots and guitars are ment to be played not become museum pieces its like all the hendrix guitars rich people have bought and none of them are being played they sit in a fucking bank vault like overpriced jewelry. Well done to this man.
Cool old find man! i think it needs a little bit of intonation work- maybe a better bridge? and ya, i agree with you on the Hemp thing, it would make a HUGE diff in the economy! But, the current 'administration' does NOT WANT a good economy. They want U.S.A. to fall.
Sounds good after 100 yrs of being hidden away.I cant help but to wonder who made it,and who was the last person to play it.Nice post and thanks for sharing this cool piece of history,Cheers.
The value of the guitar has dropped since the duct tape but I admire someone that doesn't give a fuck ^_^ This is an awesome video! That guitar was supposed to die a loooong time ago and you brought the ghost back to life. Not too many can say that!
I watched the video with some interest. Not sure about this guitar. I'm a bibliophile and discovered long ago that just because a book is old does not necessarily make it valuable. Listening to the guitar...well, it lacks tone. I've heard hundred year old Martins that sound marvelous. The guitar in the video has lost its voice. Some advice. Take it to a luthier. Why is it that people insist on restoring things when they don't know what they're doing. Duct tape? Not a good idea, at all!
Cool! Came across your vid researching Martin guitars. Yours is definitely one of my favorite youtube videos today. You are an "American picker" and a cool dude! Rock on man and keep picking!
Regardless of the duct tape, I'm still grateful we're now able to see (and hear) this amazing piece of history. It's his guitar, what he does is his business.
I own a guitar which maybe a cousin of this one. it was forgotten for seventy years, left to dry out. had some cracks, floating bridge was lost. but luckily it was found by somebody with a little more knowledge and respect for old instruments. now she lives again and plays pretty good rock'n roll!
Ouch it hurts, you can see the guitar warping under the string tension. I appreciate you showing this to us, but you shouldve got it repaired before sticking new strings on it!
Neat cool fine and swell, and thanks for sharing ... pay no attention to the idiots dissing you. You oughta be taking that groovy thing to antiques roadshow!!! Handmade stuff rules!!!
The first piece was Led Zeppelin's Black Dog.. sorta. If the guitar is really 125 years old the "ivory" might be eg. stuff called parkesine, inventor's name was Alexander Parkes, UK, came available after 1862.. or bakelite which came in early 1900 etc. I guess Dumbo's parents weren't harmed 'cause of this guitar..
Are you guys fucking kidding me? Most of these comments just go's to show how many ungrateful douchbags there really are in this world. Some cool obscure dude in the middle of nowhere decides to show us this ultra rare, epic barn guitar, and tapes it just so he can rock on it for us to enjoy, and you guys bash him for using tape instead of being greedy and taking it in etc. wow.. How about a fucking 'thank you!' ?? Thank you for doing this for us obscure dude!! This fucking rocks!!!
@4pples AGREED! And as far as the duct tape, it had FAR worse happen to it being neglected in an old barn for 75 years or more! Duct tape is NOTHING! ANY good luthier or even a good wood worker can fix that. That wood is far superior to most of the stuff they use today!
But he put f&@king duck tape on it!! Great way to devalue the guitar in 5 minutes or less!! Take it to a luthier before you start showing it off on YouTube, you dumbass!!! Any other musician out there as enraged as I am?? It hurts. It literally hurts me.
@doenutz37 lololol devalue what? its not like the thing doesn't need a complete rebuild... Duck tape doesn't devaluate it in anyway since it already has no value other than historic... People that take music too seriously are idiots... Get a grip... Music is supposed to be fun and healing... Not a bunch of wannabes who believe they are superior even though they never got ahead in music... Jimmy Hendrix smashed guitars along with a few others... and no I do not worship any players period...
@doenutz37 Look man, go to hell, ok? The man just wanted to show a 125 years old guitar and play a it for us. So don't come here being an asshole trying to point out that you are enraged over this video because you're a musician, because nobody gives a crap
@doenutz37 No, no I am not! 75 years in a barn? I know for a fact that is much harder on wood than a little adhesive residue. just the age of the wood coupled with it's remarkably good condition tells me that wood is far superior to most of what you and I play on.Even a careful novice wood worker can make that wood look like the guitar was built yesterday, with relative ease.Should he take it to a Luthier? Sure. But what if YOU found it WITH duct tape, would you throw it away?
@doenutz37 You know the duct tape may do it's own fair share of damage, but it's also a right handed guitar, and he put the strings in for a lefty. So not only has this old guitar not been used to having new strings on it, their in the opposite order putting pressure on the neck in a way it's definitely not used to. Either way it was going to be mashed so at least it's just not being properly taken care of instead of turned to dust?
The Red Green of old guitars. Just a little duct tape and some bailing wire and it'll be as good as new.. Just don't do the dope dude. It will fry your brain.
Has that got a solid spruce top and rosewood back and sides? If it has PLEASE take it to a luthier and get it refurbished - it'd be gorgeous! Where is it now?
Here mate, I would either put that on ebay or pay to have it restored. Looks like a 1910's or 20's grand concert Stella. It is worth a lot even as it stands.
Amen! There is a guitar museum with an empty stand missing a guitar, and it looks like you got it. Anyone ever tell you you sound like that comedian Red-what's his name? Yep, she is restorable, but it will take some tedious work.
Nice save. That's a cool guitar. Yes cannabis should be legal. You can make stuff with it, like clothing, paper, and shelter. ....and oh yea, you can get stoned to the bejeesus on it!!.
@autocrow ...yeah, why in the heck did they ever illegalize it anyway? Hemp has got to be one of the most useful plant there is, besides cotton and wheat.
That guitar is not fixable... it sounds horrendous. It isn't worth the duct tape you put on it. But... it's old and, thus, an antic. So you could clean it up and keep it as a ornament.
I enjoyed the video about the guitar, but dude, a scientific study last year proved that pot has more carcinagens than tobacco. Not good for your health. Because it is illegal, most people don't smoke enough to matter, but if we made it legal, then it would quickly become the leading cause of cancer. It is not a cure.
Careful With the Duck Tape IF you come to restore it! A Lovely lovely Guitar. Stay's in Tune Better than Most Thai Made Nylon's haha!!! Ima Subscribe to you'r channel.
steel strung guitars didn't exist 125 years ago. why would you duct tape this? what a moron. do you have any common sense? the neck marks on the back are from thumb nails. not a chisel. -_-
