@ jerekp2q...You don't have to have good English to realize that this is a studio recording that was made to seem like a live recording through video editing. I've listened to this track so many times over the years to know that the subtle nuances could never be replicated in a live performance.
@M400fan Yeah, sweeet. RW is a master of great chord progressions, and turning simple melodies into major masterpieces! Inspiration to many others! Back to pics for a sec. Google "Mellotron pics" & you get a ton of 'em. Check out the new digital Mellotron, 2010! Looks awesome! One of the BIG probs w Plug-in M-Tron & others is that there IS no volume pedal. Just can't play it w the same feel, & Mellotron is a LOT about the feel. Very tactile keyboard - why they have such personality! ~B.
@urmoustacheisfake - Sort of! It's a Model 6000 "Bantar," brought out in '66. He's using the "6000 Deluxe" here. Cool, huh? Roger McGuinn & Doug Dillard apparently used it, too. Info on pg. 187 of "The Complete History of Rickenbacker Guitars" by Richard R. Smith, Centerstream Pub. Awesome book if you're a Ric fan! I know I am! Cheers! ~ Berington Van Campen
Great too see Rick doing his best music, but this isn´t live it´s excactly the same as on the recording, so it mime keyboard playing. Still Great stuff.
I'd like to know exactly how the fade-in string sound at 4:10 is made. If the Mellotron has a volume pedal (and I don't know too much about Mellotrons) then it'd be a simple matter, but I have no idea if it does, since the camera understandably never bothers with Rick's feet.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this doesn't seem to be a live recording - and I think the proof is at 4.25 where you can hear the piano even though Rick is not playing it.
So, to answer your question, the fade-in sound must have been created in the studio, not live in this performance.
It isn't a live recording, but mimed - the Mellotron didn't have a volume pedal, but rather a knob - but the effect at 4:10 was achieved by backwards recording to get the right amount of "attack", emulating violins playing a brief note - the fade in at 4:16 was achieved at the mixing desk! Studio trickery even in 1973! But the whole track is sublime and quite possibly Rick's finest hour as a solo artist.
@M400fan- Actually, M-400s have both volume control (+ power, tone, pitch & track selector) on the control panel, AND a volume pedal. They wouldn't be playable the same way without it. The quick fade-up "sting" & slower swell are easy with the volume pedal. NO trickery/backwards tapes at all! I do similar effects all the time. Yes, this does seem to be played to tape, but that's common on TV, & he does it live PERECTLY! Seen him many times. ~ Berington Van Campen, owner, M-400 #1485
@Beringtunes WOW! You own an M400?!?! ANy famous owners before you? Have Streetly reconditioned your tapes? Hadn't realised they had a volume pedal, but the studio version DOES sound like it uses backward tapes - no?
@M400fan Hi! No famous prev. owners to my knowledge. Bought it used but CLEAN in '76, L.A.. Have 2 tape sets, & a few custom order sngl tapes, not recon'd. Updated pwr supply/electronics. Will be replacing motor soon, tho' & cleaning tapes, etc. RW used a lot of swell pedal FX. Check Yes, "Close to the Edge", great bit w bass & Tron swells. No backwards, it's all in the foot, & VERY easy! Googled for pics. None show a swell pedal, but on M400 u can see the jack, lwr rt corner. Cheers MFan! ~B.

I always get a kick out of this old footage. I love seeing him with long, flowing hair and that sparkling cape. He's like a...a Keyboard Hero! XD
