LA DIVINA VICTORIA DE LOS ANGELES ES LO MAS GRANDE QUE HA DADO ESPAÑA SE MERECE UN MONUMENTO POR HABER LLEVADO ESPAÑA AL MUNDO ENTERO CON SU REFINAMIENTO BUEN GUSTO Y EXCELENTE PERSONA DIOS TE TENGA A SU LADO DIVINA VICTORIA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the most remarkable performances of ANY operatic role ever captured on record is her Mélisande. I know the opera can't compete in popularity with Bohème or Carmen, but please, please, listen to it. You will be rewarded.
Apart from the sheer beauty of her voice she is so touching, Tebaldis Mimi is vocally more fullbodied - look at the famed video with Bjoerling from 1956, what voices! - but in the unsurpassed recording with Bjoerling and Beecham (Boheme), De Los Angeles Mimi is so vulnerable, so sweet and shy, so magical, she IS Mimi...
I agree with what you said about VDL...I grew upon her recordings, my mom adored her! She's perfect as Butterfly...All the youth, spin and fragility of Butterfly oozes through every note...impeccable...the trionfa il mio amor, ei torna e m'ama...is the best I've heard..
She was the first Mimi I ever heard. I was amazed. It was hard for me to hear other singers sing Mimi because she was Mimi to me. She and Bjorling singing the duet at the end of act one is amazing!! So glad she is here.
Perhaps the most musical as well as versatile with the most unique timbre. It makes me want to cry to hear this! I say her in a recital at Carnegie Hall. She make you feel you were in her living room.
The Jussi B and Victoria DeLAng combination in Madam Butterfly is even better, in my opinion, than the celebrated Tebaldi and Bergonzi recording. Quite astonishing and the supporting operatic stars are wonderful.
I agree! I just was listening to her Marguerite with Gedda a day or 2 ago and particularly in the final trio I found her singing to be touching, rather than showy. Beautiful voice, and a great singer (for the most part.) One of my favorites.
What amazing blending of the two voices. de Los angeles.....I can only think of one word when I think of her... classy. She was an amazingly classy singer.
I love both these singers together but I do think that her earlier version with De Stefano was better in Butterfly. In everything else they sang together they were the best.
The two of them are among my very favorites. They were just magical together and I think they were also great friends in person as well. I do remember reading that Victoria could not listen to anything the two of them recorded for several years after Jussi's death.
de los Angeles had a magnificent bloom, and an instinctive insight into the music.I know,I've heard her 3 times.I was thrice blessed.Definitely in the top TEN.She and Bjorling, the magic couple.
Madam De Los Angeles had the most brilliant, distinguished and "racée" (thoroughbred) voice of the 20th century. A very great interpreter of the French opera and naturally the Spanish music.
Just think of all those poor people that have been hoodwinked into believing that the Bjoerling-De Los Angeles Boheme is a great performance. "No voice for Italian opera?" De Los Angeles may the top 100 singers all by herself.
True not a GREAT Cio-Cio San but surely one worthy of more stars than 2 and a half! This is one of my favorite excerpts from "Butterfly" and that particular recording of the opera with De Los Angeles and Bjorling was quite a nice addition to my collection recently.
de los Angeles was an exquisite artist and my favorite Butterfly, but for me her best Butterfly was the one she recorded earlier with di Stefano and Gobbi under the magnetic, galvanizing, and superbly theatrical leadership of the great Gianandrea Gavazzeni.
Victoria de los Angeles es magnifica, por la tersura de su voz y su extraordinaria sensibilidad, pero... ¿Donde está Monserrat Caballe? No me puedo creer que no la haya incluido entre los 100,a ella que podria estar entre los 10.

I don't agree.Victoria De Los Angeles voice is girlish and her voice does not vibrate well. She is fine singing Garcia Lorca songs but she has NO voice to sing italian opera
True, De los Angeles had very minimal vibrato. I'm not sure about the girlish tone. But Patti and Melba also had very little vibrato and were girlish in sound, yet both are considered by most as great singers (though Melba has been criticized for her style in Italian opera). I think it's a little exaggerated to say she had "NO voice for Italian opera," but you're entitled to your opinion. What do you think of De los Angeles' French opera?
De los Angeles : c'est la beauté et la classe!

Tosca, Boheme and Butterfly V. de Los Angeles & J. Björling - wat a treasure for us Opera lovers to have to listen.
Put it on UNESCO culture bank - but with an open door.

pretty teriffic also.

Yes, Victoria sounded better in the De Stefano recording. But the Boheme Beecham/Björl/LosAng has never been surpassed. And it never will be.
Victoria was a wonderful person, great friend of Jussi and of Nicolai Gedda who adored her calling her one of the nicest person he'd met.
