Now you can go up to the snotty F1 types and say "did you know Oldsmobile once won the F1 world championship? LOLOLOL they give you this look that's priceless. Like heresy to suggest that the retiree mobile manufacturer once took it to Lotus, albeit in a round-about way.
The Sounds for this Video are taken from the book "Into the Red" By Nick Mason. He included a CD with sounds of some of his beloved racecars, among them these recordings. It's a 1954 BRM V16 MKII Front engine racecar, as correctly stated above. Give the man some credit for the recordings at least, man.
Amazing sound, closest thing I could compare this too would be the sound of Lola Formula 5000's but even then I bet they come nothing close to these monsters in real life.
0:57 I think this picture is wrong, because it shows the flatplane crankshafts,, in my opinion this engine has crossplane crankshafts,, because engine sound says it to me.... it sounds like a typical engine with crosspane crankshaft.. EXELLENT SOUND!!
@TheV8mann That may be because like a few others have said, the audio for this video is actually a BRM V-16, while all the pictures and diagrams are of the awful BRM H-16, which is basically two flat-8's on top of each other, with the cranks geared to a single output shaft. This gives you a 16-cylinder engine the length of a V8, but there are very few successful designs of this type. I don't know if the BRM V-16 was a crossplane engine, but obviously from the diagrams the H-16 was a flat-plane.
@justforever96 I'm fairly sure it has the same mirrored cross-plane crank used in most straight eights. Compare the straight 8 from an Alfa Romeo 8C or 159 Alfetta (cross-plane) with that from the Bugatti Type 35 (flat-plane). The latter sounds similar to an inline four; this V16 doesn't :)
The early H16s had flat-planes, and cylinders in opposite banks (on the same crank) would fire simultaneously. Later, proper flat-eight cranks, with throws set at 90° (L) instead of 180° (|), were used.

@betterthanbrad The Napier was an H-24, not an H-16, and this sound is from a V-16, not and H-16. Plus, the Naper Sabre ran at much lower RPM's and was a crossplane-crankshaft engine (IIRC), so I doubt they sound much alike. That's like assuming a V-8 and V-12 would sound the same because they're both Vee engines.
@phranklyn LOL, that was just a nod to appearence. Safety and racers didn't mix well back then; this was not that long after racers ran Le Mans without seat belts, because they figured it would be better to be thrown clear of the car than to be trapped in the wreckage! A lot of them died, but it still seems as if we've lost something since those days; when you had to be a warrior to be a racer.
This is from Nick Mason's book Into The Red - highly recommended. Thank you fro sharing your car with us Nick, and all the great music!!! Nick's the drummer with Pink Floyd!
yeah but the golf is shit, and this car was doing 600 BHP with a super charger and 1500cc. The golf is also two litres, so in terms of specific capacity the BRM is nearly twice as powerful, it has a smaller engine and generates nearly twice the power. So the real question is,Germany took 60 years, to get less power from a bigger engine, thats not really progress is it, oh and did I mention the golf is shit?
This is the H16, not the V16, BRM motor. And the only place where this engine was exceptional was on paper. It weighed way too much and reliability was too poor to be competitive.
@jonelsorel No this is the V-16, supercharged engine. I saw it running at a display session at Brands Hatch in the mid sixties. I think it ran on alcohol. You could hear this car when it was at the far side of the track and when it came past you, you had to cover your ears as there was a "sonic boom" so load, just amazing.
The engine is a v16 BRM from the 1950s 1500cc. if you take a lokk around you will find the original motor car with the sound attached. Sorry I was actually around when they were racing those things
When are people going to realize the the BRM V16 and H16 are NOT the same engine?
The supercharged V16 was raced 1950-1951 and was immensively powerful but with a narrow powerband and the engine was unreliable and failed to finish most races
The H16 actually won a race in1966 with Jim Clark driving in WatkinsGlen in 1966,but it was still one of the worst engines in F1 history, and most definitely the worst engine to win a Grand Prix.,JackieStewart said the engine was best used as a ships anchor
That is an H-16, the cylinders were in an H configuration, therefore H would be right, the V-16 was a much longer engine and didnt turn as much rpm, this was a major COSWORTH competitor!!!!!
This sound comes from a special book on Nick Mason's personal car collection. The book came with a CD that had all his cars being driven and recorded from various locations including inside the car. The 'missing' that you hear is the fuel freezing in the supercharger because it was a very very cold day at a Scottish race track. Simply amazing. I have doctored a little bit of this sound and made it my phone ring tone.
A better description would be H-16. It is basically TWO flat (opposed) boxer-type 8-cylinder engines, one on top of the other with two crankshafts connected by an idler gear.
There is a diagram in the video clip near the beginning.
Though this is the supercharged 1.5 V16 engine, it still sounds absolutely fantastic! Does anyone know to a video/sound file of the actual H16 engine?
First of all the sound comes from a BRM P15 with a V16. It was front engined and raced in 1951.
The rear engined BRM with a H16 did NOT sound like this, not to mention it was a horrible engine even Jackie Stewart (3 time F1 champion) told was better used as a ship's anchor than as a racing engine.
Jim Clark was the only one to win a race with the H16 engine, in the US Grand Prix in 1966, with the Lotus-BRM 43
Definitely NOT the H-16, this is Nick Mason's recording of his V-16 (Mark II) made at Donington Park. Thanks to Tony Rudd the V-16 did work in the end but much too late.
hi guys, does anyone actually know the dimension of the BRM V16, the actual engine itself not the car. i've always been curious. the idea of someting with 8 cylinders on each bank cunjours up images in my head of a ridiculously long block, but then the displacement was only 1.5Litres
I think this is the sound of a V16. Never saw actual pictures of the H16 though, only drawings. Makes one wonder why it didn't perform as awesomely as it looked.
This sound file is from Nick Mason's book "into the red" the car that you are hear is a BRM V16 MK2 built in 1953. it has 4 overhead cams, made 550 to 600hp displacing 1490cc and fed by a supercharger.
all of the pictures and title of this video are wrong.
There is a sound file containing 8 F1 cars passing by at Masta straight, Spa-Franchorchamps. The sample seems to be from 1966, however there's a B.R.M. H16 to be heard. From what was noticable it sounded a bit strange and not as scary and mighty as the older B.R.M. supercharged V16 engine.
Mouthing off a second time, and you still haven't checked your facts. Small brain, big mouth...
Oh, and by the way, the engine size depends on the geometry of the cylinders, and is not determined by the number of cylinders alone, which is why BRM had a 1.5 litre V16.

I know its the V16 not the H16 as well because I have the recording of the car on CD, it was taken at Goodwood. It was given away on the front cover of Motorsport magazine a couple of years ago.
@nctrooper10722001 WTF are you talking about?! i've seen a 3.5cc inline-4 model-engine with OHC, pressurized oil-system, spark-ignition and watercooling, so EVERYTHING is possible...
honda built a 125cc 5-cyl. (RC 149) as well as a 250cc 6-cyl. racebike (RC 166) in the 60's
moto guzzi built a 500cc V8 racebike in the 50's
and you think it's impossible to make a 1.5l V16?
did i already told you that you're a fucking idiot?!
i dont hate to say this. YOURE A MORON! IF YOU BOTHER TO LOOK AT THE DIAGRHAM AT 55 SECONDS YOU WILL SEE THAT THIS IS INDEED A H STYLE ENGINE. ITS NOT A 'V' TYPE.

I know its the V16 not the H16 as well because I have the recording of the car on CD, it was taken at Goodwood. It was given away on the front cover of Motorsport magazine a couple of years ago.

Not the H16, but the car from the sound was a fifties F1 car with a supercharged V16 engine (1.5 litres capacity)

the engine you hear running is a supercharged 1.5liter V-16 but no the H-16 is not supercharged

@378787
Also its a total of 1500cc not 2 x 1500cc

@peterfarrow Bull shit !! The fucking stroke of any 16 cyl engine X any bore would well exceed 1500cc or 1.5 liters.. learn some math BOY !!

@nctrooper10722001
You are completely wrong, please try and do a minimum of research before you open your mouth making you look like a total arse.
wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/BRM_V16
Quote "This compressor charged 16 cylinder engine from 1951 was competing in Formula One. It is a 1.5 litre engine producing 600 bhp (450 kW)."
At least I know what I am talking about, whereas you clearly do not.
Go away and do some research, until then keep your mouth shut.

@rugaferenc
i dont hate to say this. YOURE A MORON! IF YOU BOTHER TO LOOK AT THE DIAGRHAM AT 55 SECONDS YOU WILL SEE THAT THIS IS INDEED A H STYLE ENGINE. ITS NOT A 'V' TYPE.
doughnutguy82 1 year ago
@doughnutguy82 Sound is a V type. The video is H type....
