Sometimes its better to keep the boat on the trailer, than to go out when you shouldnt. There is no shame in checking the weather at the shoreline, and taking the boat back home
Minor mistake with minor consequences. Some hull scratches and the loss of a €100-500 jib. Next time they won't risk getting so close to the pilings in that long difficult channel.
Not the best place to try and get out of in those conditions unless you're lightning quick with your tacking strategy. Still, I'll bet they learned from that. Nice abandon and recovery, though.
mountains are cool to climb, or 4 wheel up, painting good too, and pictures are worth a 1000 words, but when there is no wind, with power you can still go some where. and we all have seen those sail boats out with no wind. to each his own
I'd of tacked, just used the main to move away, tacked back after 10 m or so and cleared the last pile. Easy to say sat in the office with a coffee in my hand though.
What I see as the key problem here is that the sailor is trying to head directly into the breaking waves and misses his chance to tack between waves. He should have studied this situation better from the seawall before setting sail. This is one of this situations that requires precise execution of plan - hard to improvise with strong wind, sea wall, pilings, and breaking waves. They are very lucky they didn't get killed. I say THUMBS UP for surviving this - boat and crew!
normaly sailing is more fun the more wind and waves you get but in this case... not that intelligent (on the other hand, they didn't have that much space to tack seeing how narrow the harbour entrance was)
Take heart, we all learn. Plan your exit, boat eating pilons to one side sea wall on the other plus head wind. You could have took off close to the sea wall, sheet in hard and you could have made it out. Or in between waves de-power the main slightly and sail between pilon out to open water. You were in irons at times. Coming in, drop the main and come in with the jib, slow and under control, no hurry, no panic. Just my 2 cents worth. Happy sailing!
lucky that was the worst of it ,torn jib and brused ego

wouldnt that be a lot easier if they just tacked and went away of those things?
dumon13 2 years ago
No. Beam on to that surf would capsize and / or wash them ashore. What would have helped is to launch further up wind of those piles .

so sailors are some of the worst i've ever seen seriously there trying to beat the waves with that shitty boat what chance did they ever have?
K2luver 2 years ago
racing boats arent shitty dumbass
skater11295 2 years ago
"what chance did they ever have?"
-If they had been decent sailors, it really wouldn't have been all that hard.
As dumon13 said, just take, run abeam of the shore until you are well away from the piles and the tack back.
mindreadingradios 2 years ago
A good one if they cleared those piles. I have been out in worse single handed in my old topper. Smaller boat less power and it was GREAT !

they had the jib in tight and the main out. they couldnt point up or tack cos the stupid crew would not let out the jib
waltermitty375 3 years ago
In my opinion it was the helm's fault
as sailindude1221 said he should have tacked, but they didn't have enough speed because the helm didnt sheet in his main.
riding the wave back to the port looked nice though, should have put the symmetric up since the jib was torn :p
ThisManForHire 3 years ago
Ok, first of all why would you let your boat get that close to the pilings, second why not just tack away in that situation?
