I see a lot of people complaining about subsequent games that came out from these studios (Dragon Age, Dungeon Siege, etc.). Bioware is who made this game *Truly great - try playing the Mass Effect series - after you get used to the sci-fi setting, you will *NOT* be disappointed.
I really don't mind the graphics, and I only just got this game a year ago. The only thing that I wish could be added is an "extended" voice patch. Maybe I'm just spoiled with modern games having everything voiced, but I would easily pay another 60 $ extra for such a patch alone. Heck, I would throw in my house for it as well.
@Amycus89 Unfortunately, or in someways fortunately, there are over 800,000 lines of text in the game. Considering the amount in most modern games, to do it justice would cost far too much. Especially for a game that no one is going to pay them for anymore. Would be good to see how it turned out though for the die hard fans :)
Man this game needs to be remade. Just imagine it with DAO style gameplay and moderately good graphics with everything else exactly the same. So epic.
@PharodWormhair But PSt combat was terrible... It's regarded as the poorest combat of 90''s CRPGs. I'd say it was very broken. The only reason it is revered is because of t's story and writing.
best rpg ive ever played hands down and maybe the best game ever? very moving story that completely immersed me in the game, the settings, characters etc. After i beat it, I replayed it and did every possible side quest/mission because I did not want to miss out on anything in this game. I NEVER do that for any game...
@supergod69 Personally, I like Aerie's theme better, but I know what you mean, both of these songs really get to you and both Baldur's Gate and Planescape are some of my favorite games ever. They really don't make games like that anymore.
@franceschetto626 Plus there will never be another game set in the Planescape settings since Hasbro/Wizards of the coast thought it would be a good idea to kill off all the unique D&D settings and leave Forgotten Realms and a crappy generic setting of their own creation. It's enough to make you sick.
Gaming companies need to profit or they go out of business; I don’t see many people volunteering the millions of dollars and thousands of hours it takes to produce high quality games, do you? Have you ever considered that perhaps gaming companies need to market to the masses more because unethical people such as yourself pirate everything in site? If you don't like it don't buy it and flame whoever you must to deaf ears, pirating is completely unjustifiable.
@FinalBrick sadly that seems to be the case, why have games that push the envelope and brake new ground like Baldur's gate, Ultima 7, Planescape, and so on when we can have cut scene ridden linear bore fests with uninteresting and often times unlikable characters and ridicules and nonsensical stories like Final Fantasy 13 and 13-2 or even brain dead crap like Dragon age 2 because who really want good deep games? when casual and consolfied crap is where the profits are.
@Evilmonkey66699 I mostly agree, but unlike most of the internet I actually liked Dragon Age 2. I enjoyed what I thought was an unconventional, morally grey conflict even if the combat was simplified and the environments repetitive. I guess I just liked that it worked on a more personal level than an epic one. Still, to each his own.
Dragon Age 2 is a hersey to once have been the "gaming series who is the spiritual successor to Baldurs gate"....that was said in release of Dragon Age : Origins. Dragon Age 2 might be fun, but it's a shallow RPG with the focus on stupid sex and shit jokes where the creator think we as players are stupid and cannot handle options. .
@Marcusianery Actually, it focussed on telling a story... I got through the whole DA2 story without having sex with any of the characters.
If you look at a game and try to see only negatives, you will find only negatives.
I was playing games strongly when the Infinity Engine games were released and thanks to GOG have bought them all for what must be the fourth (and last I guess) time... I love them, but I still like the modern games, including DA2.
@Grigeral Dragon Age 2 is inferior sadly. It tried to be more action oriented, Failed hard versus Witcher 2 and Dungeon Siege 3 by Obsidian, hack n slash RPG had bigger plot twists and consquences in the ending then Dragon Age 2 had...if you look for an action RPG, sure sure, Dragon Age 2 works but if you look for something liek Dragon Age Origins. forget it. I for one, hold Witcher 2 in high regard and Dragon Age 2...well, I cannot support it. But its good someone likes it I guess :)
@Marcusianery To each their own :). Dungeon Siege 3 I was really let down with, but then, I have been with all bar the 1st. I like a decent story in games which is why I enjoyed DA2. Granted, I would have preferred it to be more like the first, but they focussed it in one place giving a more involved feel to the story. At least that's how I felt about it :).
It's not exactly game of the year, but I found it worth £30 :). Took me about 40 hours too, so it wasn't scrimping.
@FinalBrick heh, sometimes I wish I could just remove my memory of all these epic RPGs, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and experience the wonder of playing the for the first time again :)
The script to this game is beyond awesome. Imagine all the creative minds behind this game, hours and hours of making this beautiful story...it's like reading a interactive book with music and video. They dont make this kind of game anymore which is pretty pretty sad:(
Would be interesting to see Planescape as a movie, with the same script and dialoge.
Btw for me the only thing witcher achieved is good atmosphere, I mean its not bad compared to lots of games... But come on you can't compare it to PST... It has the greatest story ever! I mean a game where you are invulnerable that doesnt suck ass... You wonder years after you played it has the nameless one truly changed his nature and what can truly change it, whats *your* answer to the riddle, which of the factions has the right idea... I mean come on, witcher isnt even in the same league!
@00RiderOfTheStorm00 I'm strongly against comparing two titles, because they share the same genre. Take Baldur's Gate for example. In comparison to PST it looks rather pale in terms of story told. But does it realy? It's just completly different story and that's the point of rpg games - to tell different stories. I know some people, who said that they actualy liked Baldur's better, because of the story told! It doesn't make it better game than PST or The Witcher. It's just the mater of taste.
@Mizmaaa Well this is just my opinion, I could point out many reasons why PS:T story is far better, but I guess there are people who like The Witcher story better and who could find reasons for it being superior... As for the Baldur's gate it is a pretty common fantasy story but the detail and the way it is told make it stand above the rest... But then again, I like PS:T better :)
@00RiderOfTheStorm00 You know, though PS:T is in my opinion the best video game ever created, I do apprecieate Baldurs Gate's story too, maybe not as much but still. It's more than just a "pretty common fantasy story" - the Prophecy of Alaundo thing, the story of Irenicus' fall, the moving stories of your companions (sometimes nearly as good as in PS:T)... There is much good in there, too.
@ThomasUfnalCrowlake Compared to most games Baldurs Gate kicks ass, but compared to PST it is a very mainstream game... I mean imagine how much ideas and inspiration it took to make something like PST... Baldurs gate has an awsome story, but it is not that different from most stories in the Forgotten Realms... A blackguard-like guy and a wizard are perhaps the most common fantasy antagonists... Being one of the chosen with unique powers... But it is a great game that stands above the most...
@00RiderOfTheStorm00 I don't think it so much makes BG look mainstream, but whereas Baldurs Gate makes modern RPG's look like hack and slash games, Torment makes BG look the same.
Also, just incase you're arsed :). The game is no more called 'Planescape Torment' than Baldurs Gate is called 'Forgotten Realms Baldur's Gate'. Planescape is simply the D&D campaign setting :).
@00RiderOfTheStorm00 The difference to me was that BG had an iffy plot and a generic setting, but it didn't matter because it was so well built you felt you could just climb in and live there. Whereas with other RPGs both before and since, it just feels like a guided tour. "Visit Scenic Azeroth!"
The problem of being neutral is also a big part of the Witcher stories. To sum it up, in terms of storytelling screenwriters have done really good job, it just wasn't enough to beat Planesca
That's the kind of postmodernist intertextualism that work for me. I think the biggest problem with the Witcher is that is was written by the Sapkowski fans for Sapkowski fans. People who haven't read the Witcher stories and saga sure miss a lots of juicy details the game has to offer. There is a short story or maybe even a part of the novel behind almost every character in the game! And they brought it all into the game in dialogues and mini quests sometimes. The problem of being neutral is al
PST is my favorite game of all, but, being polish I feel I have to stand up for the Witcher too. It's definitely not only stupid h'n's, there are some really great bits in this game. Take for example the story of the village haunted by the demon dog or the story of two sisters later on. Both of them have lots of Sapkowskis's unique style touches. Also the story of 2 sisters is based on the one of the greatest polish romanticism tragedies 'Balladyna' by Juliusz Slowacki, that's the kind of postm
guys stop bashing witcher sure it doesnt have the depth of this game but by the gods they at least tried, its still better then the crap thats coming out today, seriously games like dragon age and fallout may seem epic as some people describe them but when you get past all of the sharade you find out how shallow and copy cats they actualy are. We are a dying breed my friends so why frustrate just go with it and turn your brains off it makes life so much simple
man.. there is alot of talk about piracy. let me tell any watching game developers, if you make a game with heart - such as this, i will buy it. if you make a game with no heart, tailored for the masses, tailored to make as many $ as possible, i will pirate it. your choice.
@AndyMcNabStab Then again, Black Isle no longer excists, meaning the money goes to the other assisting (I use that word loosely) companies that still excists like Interplay.
Now let's imagine that Interplay is full of rich bastards who used to sell great games, but nowadays sells crappy games and crappy expansions fro 'em with ridicilously high prices.
Now, I'm not saying that interplay is like that, nor do I not mean it.
It's not as simple as it looks, while variety of rights, e.g. D&D trademarks etc. are in hands of Atari, many games themselves are still in Interplay's possession, which creates quite problematic situation for companies interested in re-releasing for example Torment, they'd have to ask them both for permission.
@MrLestatto I thought Interplay sold the related rights due to financial problems. There's a reason most of Black Isle jumped ship to Obsidian and Troika when they knew what was up.
They sold some trademarks, like Baldur's Gate, so Atari could make 3rd part if they wanted, but original titles are still Interplay possession (if not in hands of original studios like BioWare which can still claim their Infinity engine rights). Also various titles are in hands of BioWare, which makes it even more confusing, e.g. NWN has owners in Atari, EA, Infogrames and many others, which makes things very difficult when one's willing to distribute it legally.
@AndyMcNabStab why do you steal games without heart, made for masses and money? Its like stealing a stupid stone only because someone put price on it. Dont like it? Dont play it.
@magmos As much as I'd like to support the original authors, that money won't go in their pockets, although guys owning GoG are bro-tier developers themselves. Alas, no same team will ever be assembled, no similar levels of god-tier atmosphere and dialogue will be written, Chris Avellone will hardly be given the creative liberties to do a project this profound again.
Whenever I hear this theme, I hear her words echo in my head and a tear wells up.
Perhaps nothing can change the nature of a man ? Perhaps it's all just unalterable fate ? If you were born to be a saint or a serial killer - perhaps that was all decided from the outset and you will never have any power to change it ? That would make the universe a pretty senseless place. But perhaps it's true all the same ? Or perhaps not ? P:T is such an epic game ! Ditto all of the IE games. Depth of thought and feeling rules in these things of beauty.
People seem to be (generally speaking and without wanting to be offensive) of rather limited intelligence these days. As a result very average creations end up being lauded as if they were something extraordinary while exceptionally good stuff is overlooked. This is the nature of democracy : Mr.Average always wins in the end. The IE games were released for a minority by a minority. That time has unfortunately passed. We are now stuck with stuff which has been tailor-made for the majority.
I own The Witcher but haven't played it yet. If it achieves a greater depth of feeling or thought than P:T then I'll be truly amazed. I played part of the way into it and it's just hack-and-slash as far as I can see. That was just the combat though. There has to be some sort of an agreement between the intelligence of the game mechanics (e.g. D&D rules) and the intelligence of the story. But how many people would recognise an intelligent story ? P:T's story is very intelligent indeed.
@zarakhast the Witcher is a great game, far more than just hack n slash, once you get further you will probably think different. much like PS:T decisions really seem to matter and even the combat is tactical once you progress.. buy yeah even so, PS:T is on another level.
@DeatgMagnet you are entitled to your opinion, but the ammount of references to Philosophy, art, literature, human existance and many other aspects of life that this game manage to capture can only be described as art. Planescape Torment can truly surprise you everytime you play it cuz every time you experience the nameless one ordeal, you see a your own travel reflected in the game story. What can change the nature of a man?
Would make a great CGI movie, if done in the same animation style as the cutscenes were. Great musical themes, too! Plotwise, if you liked this game, you'd probably like the film "Angel Heart."
The Deionarra story is one of the saddest i have experienced in a game. The whole experience in the sensory stone, where you experience a meeting with an old incarnation of yours through Deionarra's eyes was so well done..
Many gamers are too young to remember it. Its story and the way its told through characterization, dialogue, music, and graphic art outclasses every RPG made before, or since
However, for me, that's why it's not Annah, or Fall-from-Grace but Deionara, who can make the Nameless One "confess" that it's love which can change the nature of man rather than regrets and face his fate, keeping his head up. However, I guess you enjoyed your own story.
Thank you for the track. Hearing it again takes me back... certainly one of my all time favourites. And the one that made the player most emotionally connected!
(although in this sense I have a hard time picking the winner between chrono trigger and this)
so what about you people, any other game besides this that made emotionally connected :> ??
Im asking because the comments here were generally nice. Im counting on not being commented on sexual orientation, anything about my mother, etc ;)
And this is after having played the similarly themed Baldur's Gate and now Dragon Age. Neither of those even compare to PST in terms of depth of story although they rival it for length.
Pretty sad, considering that PST itself was far from perfect.
@kwincunx You're probably right about Dragon Age - though I haven't played it yet and am beginning to wonder why I bothered buying it - but it surprises me that you can't sense the same depth in both BGs and both IWDs. It's just less explicit. They weren't fools who wrote these games. They just decided to sign off with their deepest ever RPG : Planescape : Torment.. They KNEW that this wasn't going to be "popular". The same depth is there in the BGs and the IWDs, however.
@zarakhast It's a personal preference. The IWD and BG worlds just didn't seem as interesting to me. I'm sure the story and characters were great. It just didn't hold my attention the same way. :)
@kwincunx I'm not sure of this but I think that P : T and the BGs and the IWDs had many writers in common. Obviously P : T was set in the Planescape universe while the other games were set in the Forgotten Realms. P : T is definitely the deepest game yet written for computers (any format). For me it's already a legendary game. But what I can't understand is people who are intelligent enough to appreciate P : T but who look down on BG (1&2) and the IWDs. The IE games are ALL full of depth.
@zarakhast I think it's the initial impact of the game world. BG and IWD's first few hours just didn't draw me in like PST did. They may well be supremely deep, but I just didn't stick around to sample that depth. Also, I think Planescape has a definite edge over FR when it comes to being interesting. Everyone's seen elves and dwarves done to death but a city of wandering doors ruled by a queen made of blades who hates being worshipped? Oh, hell yes. :)
@Loomr These games I felt conneted with the character too: Gabriel Knight 1 and 3, Final Fantasy VI (for SNES), System Shock 2, Portal, Star Control 2, 5 days a stranger saga (it's a must-play), Lands of Lore, Hacker Evolution/Untold, Mission Critical (a must-play), Frederick Pohl's Gateway 1 and 2 (must-play), Legend of Kyrandia 3, The Journeyman Project 3 (must-play), Beyond Good and Evil (must-play) and The Longest Journey (MUST-play)
@Mirkoyanque Yeah, hello. It's interesting, because Gabriel Knights (especially 1 and 3) are among my favorites too .. as well as system shock 2.
Even lands of lore was fun back in the day, although I must say in those times the best fantasy game for me plot and character wise was Betrayal At Krondor. That was a masterpiece.
Makes me wanna go play those old games again :P .. it just seems like I have too little time these days (studies&work and other boring things).
Ladies and gentlemen, I think we've found out what can change the nature of a man right here. Being dumped turns an ordinary young blade into a TOTAL FJOERKING WUSS.
I've been "out more". I've been to many places, and never again will I find one like her.. The misery and blame was all worth it.. what I regret is not doing things differently..
You! What is it that brings you here?! Have you come to see first-hand the misery you have wrought? Perhaps in death I still hold some shred of use for you"my Love".
What a great game this was. Along with the two BGs and the Icewind Dales this is just gaming perfection, but in terms of storyline and the way you can interract with NPCs this is out on its own. Nice artwork for the video. The hand-drawn art in this game grows on you. I didn't like it at first but it has a quality about it that draws you in to the game. Classic game.
Just list them in date order and you know Trias and Ranziel: Daggerfall, Fallout, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale, NOX, ID2, Morrowind, Oblivion, NWN2, Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Fallout 3. A downward spiral for deep, hardcore roleplaying games if you ask me.....
yeah well I have to say ... daggerfall wasn't always that good either :D I think I lost like 5 years of my life due to the mental burnout of coping with the bugs, glitches and general frustration with that game.
Still I feel nostalgic thinking about it. These new console games are definitely played too safe. You cant even fall to a pit anymore!
Yes, sad. Dragon Age from Bioware isn't going to be as deep as PS:T. You can see that after watching the trailer. Swinging swords and killing bad guys left and right, as always...
I see a lot of people complaining about subsequent games that came out from these studios (Dragon Age, Dungeon Siege, etc.). Bioware is who made this game *Truly great - try playing the Mass Effect series - after you get used to the sci-fi setting, you will *NOT* be disappointed.

A blackguard-like guy and a wizard are perhaps the most common fantasy antagonists... Being one of the chosen with unique powers... But it is a great game that stands above the most...
00RiderOfTheStorm00 11 months ago
@00RiderOfTheStorm00 I don't think it so much makes BG look mainstream, but whereas Baldurs Gate makes modern RPG's look like hack and slash games, Torment makes BG look the same.
Also, just incase you're arsed :). The game is no more called 'Planescape Torment' than Baldurs Gate is called 'Forgotten Realms Baldur's Gate'. Planescape is simply the D&D campaign setting :).
Grigeral 11 months ago
@Grigeral Lol I know... I have read the Planescape campaign setting books, but calling it "Torment" just somehow isn't right...
00RiderOfTheStorm00 11 months ago
@00RiderOfTheStorm00 Fair enough. But regardless of names... It's a stunning game and the music is simply masterful :).
Grigeral 11 months ago 2
@00RiderOfTheStorm00 The difference to me was that BG had an iffy plot and a generic setting, but it didn't matter because it was so well built you felt you could just climb in and live there. Whereas with other RPGs both before and since, it just feels like a guided tour. "Visit Scenic Azeroth!"

More on the second comment
Hellsing1138 9 months ago
@Hellsing1138 As far as I know the rights are jointly owned by Hasbro\Atari (that includes Icewind Dale and Baldurs Gate as well).
darthbandon10 8 months ago
@darthbandon10
It's not as simple as it looks, while variety of rights, e.g. D&D trademarks etc. are in hands of Atari, many games themselves are still in Interplay's possession, which creates quite problematic situation for companies interested in re-releasing for example Torment, they'd have to ask them both for permission.
MrLestatto 8 months ago
@MrLestatto I thought Interplay sold the related rights due to financial problems. There's a reason most of Black Isle jumped ship to Obsidian and Troika when they knew what was up.
darthbandon10 8 months ago
@darthbandon10
MrLestatto 8 months ago
@AndyMcNabStab *more*
But still, *if* Interplay is like that, I would'nt buy the game, even if it was a good game.
They have the money and the time to make more good games, but (again, *if*) they choose to make tons of crappy games nonstop.
That's why I would pirate it.

@magmos As much as I'd like to support the original authors, that money won't go in their pockets, although guys owning GoG are bro-tier developers themselves. METALGEARSOL1D 1 year ago 4

@Loomr
Grim Fandango probably came closest.
And this is after having played the similarly themed Baldur's Gate and now Dragon Age. Neither of those even compare to PST in terms of depth of story although they rival it for length.
Pretty sad, considering that PST itself was far from perfect.
I'm sure your mother's a very nice person. :P
kwincunx 2 years ago
@kwincunx You're probably right about Dragon Age - though I haven't played it yet and am beginning to wonder why I bothered buying it - but it surprises me that you can't sense the same depth in both BGs and both IWDs. It's just less explicit. They weren't fools who wrote these games. They just decided to sign off with their deepest ever RPG : Planescape : Torment.. They KNEW that this wasn't going to be "popular". The same depth is there in the BGs and the IWDs, however.
zarakhast 1 year ago
@zarakhast It's a personal preference. The IWD and BG worlds just didn't seem as interesting to me. I'm sure the story and characters were great. It just didn't hold my attention the same way. :)
kwincunx 1 year ago
@kwincunx I'm not sure of this but I think that P : T and the BGs and the IWDs had many writers in common. Obviously P : T was set in the Planescape universe while the other games were set in the Forgotten Realms. P : T is definitely the deepest game yet written for computers (any format). For me it's already a legendary game. But what I can't understand is people who are intelligent enough to appreciate P : T but who look down on BG (1&2) and the IWDs. The IE games are ALL full of depth.
zarakhast 1 year ago
@zarakhast I think it's the initial impact of the game world. BG and IWD's first few hours just didn't draw me in like PST did. They may well be supremely deep, but I just didn't stick around to sample that depth. Also, I think Planescape has a definite edge over FR when it comes to being interesting. Everyone's seen elves and dwarves done to death but a city of wandering doors ruled by a queen made of blades who hates being worshipped? Oh, hell yes. :)

@kwincunx
BG games were great, specially the second one. IWD not so much.

doesn't regret make you discard any future misery and blame that could be "worth it"?
kamatej 2 years ago
It depends on the origins of regret...
...if regret comes from analysis of one's behavior and the realisation that one has done wrong, then it is worth it, for it makes that one grow...
...but if regret comes only from not having the desired outcome of one's actions, then it is nothing but misery.
