I have just bought an old south bend lathe with a turret on it, i have never used a turret lathe before how do i lock the turret into place so i can then work off of it?
i just purchased a Logan model 7500 lathe i ran it at the shop and its in good condition everything works on it and i bought it for $600 do you think it is a reasonable price......Sir
Watch closely you soft fingered computer geek machinist out there like me, this video reminds me of my dad who constantly reminds me in the shop "This is how a real man works"
@Themcmartijn your a Fucking Idiot. You have to realise this man has an entire life of experience, when your in school you do everything by the book yeah, Soon as you get out the industry, if you do everything the school teaches you your Dumb ass will get fired for Wasting company time which = money. I'm only 23 years old and I'm a head foreman at a cylinder machine shop soon to inherit it entirely and if some idiot like you was working for me and they were wasting my time with semantics. Fired
@BloodReborn87 I was doing this job when you were still in diapers. I can tell you right now, if you even tried to fire me for doing things safely, then I would OWN a cylinder head machine shop and you would be indebted to me for the rest of your life. Fucking idiots like you are one of the big reasons this is a dieing trade. I have an apprentice working under me right now and SHE is being taught not only how to do things fast but also safely.
@MadMachinist1000 this bloodreborn87 clown sounds like the bosses son to me. Who else puts a 23 year old pup in charge of the shop floor? Wonder how many fingers he has?
If im not very much mistaken thats a colchester triumph 2000 in the background the best all round centre lathe ever produced i have one with a turret attachment and it is worth its weight in gold to me !!
CAN you please for the love of hands not remove the swarf like that very very dangerous i dont care if its a 6 inch lathe or 36 they can slice a figer clear off or pull your hand in. GREAT machinist bad safty
the die holder is keyed so that it can move back and forth but not rotate. Since the part is rotating, it automatically threads itself on to or off of the part.
I can typically repeat within +/- .001 with this machine. They can work to closer tolerances, but you have to tune the gibbs and spindle bearings so that it's operating at maxumum proformance.

Did a repair on one of those. The operator kept slamming the lever back when indexing the turret and broke the ratcheting pawl under the turret.

@bloodreborn87 maybe i answered to tough, when i said this i didnt had course and thought that the school way was the best way.
I learned on course that next to safety speed is also an importent thing so for my hard response on this video i apologize .
P.S : Good for you i hope you get high in your carreer =)

Man use a brush to remove chip and dont ever use your hands to make it clean.
Cant believe you dont know that what are you 50?
I'm 17 and following an education on how to turn metal and even i know how to clean chip.
And i also see that there is no safaty cap.
Sure you can turn metal fine but plz show people how to turn the good way.
If you keep making movies like this i hope the labour exchange kicks you out of your own company.

Brilliant lathe, makes me wonder if my plan to get a standard mini lathe (Weiss) is a sound one.. :-)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
At a 'certain depth' you 'auto reverse it'...??
I think you MANUALLY reverse it.......
You're making it sound WAY more technically advanced than it really is....
Time to get a CNC lathe....

steel and aluminium is not that bad(didnt say u should do it though)... but stainless is really mean... i always use some clamp to tear it away

It sounds like it's plastic that he's cutting, so maybe it's OK.
ryobiguy 3 years ago
yeah looks like delrin or nylon swarf, but still bad safety practice.
marmaladekamikaze 2 years ago
im not a machinist or anything.. so forgive me if this is stupid.. But I'm guessing the swarf is the shavings left hanging off the part he's turning?

I happily spend all day on my Ward one inch capacity capstan lathe producing parts in brass and plastics.

can you add a lathe chuck to a hardinge turret lathe
7080allischalmers 3 years ago
Yes a 3 or 4 jaw chuck, but it needs to have a 5c collet fitting or placed into a 5c collet which could compromise some repeatability

did the tap just pull it self on once you got it started, what are the chances of the tap just screwing up ?

Not bad then! Never saw one of these workin so I was rather schocked to see how fast you can finish a part!
