Thus song isa about ppl in WWII listening to the radio, especially important in Britian, of cwho did conquer totalinarianism ourse their heroes were the Allied Troops, Winston Chirchill and FDR. Real heroes
So glad i sticked to my taste in music! at 14 i loved this guys and their music and style in spite of harsh critics , funny now every one says "oh i wish i had experienced them back then"
Since so many kids are learning songs from the late '60s and '70s, and playing them in bands and re-recording them, hopefully they'll also advance to stuff like this eventually. It's seems to me that most of the best innovative, best written rock, came from around the mid '60s, and ended in the late '80s or early '90s.
never worn jewellery, a watch is about as far as i go. but in the early 80s on my black side zipped shirt i wore 2 of the UV logos(as you see on the clip) on the points of the collar. little metal badges in black and gold i think i picked them up at the concert in Sydney Australia. still have them after all this time, wow i treasure them now :)m49 yep i was there
No wonder people got crazy at their reunion tour! ! ! it proofs just how much they have been missed and how litle the music of today gives us in comparison.noone will ever come close!
just to reiterate all the previous comments - they dont make vids like this anymore - innovative/original artistic etc etc and a great song and yes political - no bad for a wee guy from cambuslang
@Andybaby actually quite the opposite mate, clips were often a 1 shot thing as video cost a ton then. these days they spend millions on some clips with a truckload of effects and a shitty dance routine(note particularly yank r&b,rap and pop), while the songs worth NOTHING and is utterly forgettable.
Fabulous - creative, innovative, and one of many genres of music around at the time. Contrast that with the plasticised rubbish around today. I am glad I am not growing up in the music of today. Long live the 80s!!!
The great absurdity of pop music is that is constantly needs to change, but in the late-70's/early-80's it hit perfect pitch with bands like Ultravox. So a golden era comes and goes, cause change is required. Kind of crazy, especially considering the kind of crap produced these days.
I've seen Midge and Ultravox live many times since 1982. This and Visions in Blue are far superior to Vienna. The Voice is a classic, what a guy Slik, The Rich Kids, Visage, Thin Lizzy, Ultravox, Band Aid, with Mick Karnes and Solo Artist. He's done it all, multi talented musician, songwriter, record producer and a superb vocalist and he is one gallas lookin dude, absolutely brilliant. I'm huge fan of Midge- The Vox were nothin till Midge replaced John Foxx
Having just found out that a friend of mine committed suicide I'd like to say "If your voice cannot be heard then you cannot make a difference". He was a Marine and he served us all well. Godspeed my brother. I hope you found what you were looking for. I dedicate this song to him.
PS Do not reply. Your sympathy's are not necessary for you knew him not. Carry on . . .
love this song . and unlike a lot of people i like midge's mustache ana hair. shame he didn't keep both. love midge a lot. he's a great singer, gorgious, and sexy too. stil is.
Every twentysomething who does not do an effort to listen to these 80s pearls
has got his eardrums torn out of his head by the crap they serve in these megamalls of worthless dancemusic or (c)rapmusic.
Lyrics do not count anymore. You may as well put a bucket of ballbearings in a cementmixer and stick your head in that , than to listen to todays tympanic rape.
The exception being something like Radiohead and their likes.
For me, 'The Voice' and 'The Thin Wall' are just so underrated it's untrue - both classic, classic tracks that are more than the equal of 'Vienna'. Keep up the great posting dude!
Does anyone know the origins of this song, I mean, the lyrics? What's the main message? I've been searching the Internet for some reference, but I haven't found any. Thanks in advance for your help!
¿Alguien tiene información sobre la temática de esta canción, en qué se basa o sobre como surgió? Me encantaría que me ayudarais. ¡Gracias!
Ultravox and Midge Ure are fuckin masters of synth pop and new romantic sound, they are able to create past atmospheres with just a melody... this was pure music and someday they will be considered as they deserve...

I played the B side this morning off the voice 12" LP..All stood Still and Private Lives (boths tracks live at Chrystal Palace 1981).Sound so good even 28 years later!!
How Midge was never knighted and Geldof was, considering he wrote the bloody band aid song is a mystery, all Geldof did was eff and blind at people to give them some F****** money, and Ultravox were far bigger than his Boomtown Rats... The wee fella never got the reward he so deserved
I couldnt have put it better myself, but i think there was a bit of political crappy positoning going on at the time. IE Maggy crappy Thatcher spit spit
Midge Ure should have got more praise, but I can't say I'm a fan of knighthoods and that whole corrupt medieval system. OBE should be WBE (What British Empire (left)?)
I think as soon as folk as Geldoff got into that whole thing, it was downhill from there. Geldof and Bono were always great self-promoters.
Yes i agree that there was some awful music in the 80`s,as far as i am concerned there will be no other period in my lifetime that will better that era,TBH modern music is shite i would much rather jump back 20 years and listen to music as it should be,originality, diversity and sheer magic... Getting back to Midge, yes he deserves the recognition but he hasnt made a big deal of it,while geldof hasnt done fuck all since except fuck up being a parent

"For God's sake somebody bring back the 80's" - not all sweetness and light. Do we really want the Cold War & fear of being nuked, massive strikes, and yuppie greed?
There was a lot of pretty bloody awful music in the 80s too. Most of it thankfully forgotten - Banarama, Bucks Fizz, Milli Vanilli etc. Ultravox is one of the better bands that used the synth, but there were plenty of other "synth laden" groups, which were pretty bad - especially AOR stuff.
Midge Ure once said he didn't write political songs. Ha, ha. He must have forgotten this excellent attack upon the media and it's control by media. Excellent!
In serious competition for best song on the planet and beyond.
