Cool. Was doing a tad of research on my G.Uncle, Lt. Henry Thomas Britton VC (34th) when I came across this. He joined up as a digger, promoted in the field, got the MC for knocking off two machine guns and pulling in wounded, then got plugged with some shrapnel while showing some yanks the lines, and later died of his wounds. Tuff lad.
Thanks for this preview: my direct ancestors Lieut Harry IKIN (kia) and Pte George IKIN (dow), both young farmers fought in 34th Batt. More of 'mine' fought WW2, telling me the reasons why they enlisted. The surviving airforce pilots told me the only way they could carry out their missions (both based in England) was to believe the enemy was evil & that they must destroy them or else BE destroyed, simple as that. Both world wars were perpetrated by Germans & allies. Lest We Forget
its about time another film bout the great war came out. there arent very many out there and this is brilliant!!!!!!!!!!! please let me know when it is produced i want to buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
australians should be proud of what we fought for, but we are under attack yet again this time by greedy people in power and politicians - oppresive trade that is destroying our heritage of domestically made goods and farming. and all for a quick buck everything we fought for is ww1 and ww2 is getting recked or already has been recked by greedy generation x and generation y
this is the reason that im moving out of england its ruled by the ignorant and greedy. aussie dont put up with that as much as we do so i no ill get on much better there than here!!!
man this looks epic as, if the australian movie company is willin to spends millions on that lackluster movie 'australia" they should be willing to give just as much to something that is good
Hey guys, great film. Just wanted to let you know that the 34th Battalion never made it to the Western Front until 1917. Its first battle was at Messines, Belgium, which I think would make a far more interesting concept for a film.
The 34th battalion arrived at the line in November 1916 and was there for the worst winter of 1916-1917. You are right that thier first battle was Messines which is featured alot in our script as well as the 12th of october 1917 where a Captain in the battalion won a VC.
at over 20,000 dollars it is the biggest budget Canadian movie ever made, it is going to be amazing, It is about time that a story about the war indeed any war in our memory was told from the perspective of the colonies
Though this is Canadas first movie in "our" perspective, there has been other commonwealth colonies that had movies/stories made in their perspective. I recommend one of Mel Gibsons first movies: Gallipoli. it's about the ANZAC (auzzies and kiwis) in WWI during the battle of Gallipoli in Turkey.
If you can get a hold of the 1980s aussie miniseries 'Anzacs', you will get a much better perspective of the Australian forces in ww1. This mini-series was followed a platoon of mates from when they enlisted to when the survivors returned home. It was a great tribute, ,was well researched, well actored and had a great cast which included Paul Hogan. It is much better than 'Gallipoli'.
Do it!!!! Good Luck!!! I hope to see this project realized. There aren't enough WWI movies at all!!! As far as theANZACS we at least have Gallipoli all though it quite short on war...also Breaker Morant but that was 20 years earlier. Good luck once again! Please!
i reckon that there isnt enough highlighting the kiwi units of WW1. new zealand took the most disproportionate casualities of any allied country in WW1, losing 18,000 killed, not to mention casualties out of a force of roughly 100,000. My great grandfather was at galipoli and fought at paschendale.
and i think that the contributions of the smallest dominion are far too overlooked in film
Acknowledged. Name a film of WW1 that mentions the British lets say The Royal Warwicks The South Staffs Rifle Brigade Sherwood Foresters The Leicesters Royal Welch Fusillers Northumberland Fusillers The Devons Durham Light Infantry Seaforths Black Watch Artists Rifles dont worry anzac21 we to are overlooked, worldwide.
"I didn't know the australians were there too." My god dude... they lost their lives by the thousands. The Galipolli invasion force was mainly Aussi. Some of the best soldiers in the war. Do not put them in billets though... :)
Nope - Gallipoli invasion force was mostly British and French, as were the vast majority of the allied casualties. It's famous from an Australian perspective because it was the first time the ANZACs actually fought as a distinc volunteer force in WWI.
That's just not true mate - the Brits and French were the majority force right from the 1st landings, and suffered the same 60% casualty rate the ANZACS did. life was cheap in all camps.
@AlienFirefox haha they just joined Austria (their allies) against Serbia. than France with it's "triple entente " alliance with Russia and UK declared war to Germany.....
note that France secretly gave weapons and ammo to Serbia before officially being in the war so this is to me dirtyer than what Germany did....
moreover France wanted to take back " l'Alsace-Lorraine "wich they lost during the franco-prussian war.
although I am not German or Austrian I'm just OBJECTIVE !!!

First off there are dozens of movies in full color based around WW1, so ridiculous comments like 'Only exp in Black + White undermine your trailer instantly. Also since there have barely been 4 generations SINCE ww1, 'For generations' is somewhat of an overstatement. That said, kudos to ur DOP + ur costume/props department and good luck with it.
OMG bro their is a australian branch of paramount pictures. In australia that want to make at least three aussie movies a year with hollywood budget's. You must look in to it.
A Canadian actor, Paul Gross, has amassed something like $20million to make a movie called Passchendaele. I believe it begins filming soon. Perhaps it's success could increase interest in your script. Good Luck.
While I welcome anything that chronicles the "Great War" especially the AIF. I really hope before this film makes production the producers get a good military/historical advisor on board. Because I think they really need it. Its just as easy to make a film with the correct detail as it is without it. Of course if its just for the masses who dont care about detail? and just want blood guts and machine guns ? its fine.
Thank you for the comment. If you check out the second promo you will see more of the research side. Prominent Australian military advisor Mr Ian Sparke penned this story around 14 years ago and has remained a co-writer. He will be remaining as Associate Producer/military advisor. Our number one concern is detail. This is a script that has captured every detail of the western front. Yes there are gritty battle scenes, much like 'Band of Brothers', but it is a very personal story.
Mate i have grown up on the legends of the ANZAC's and it really upsets me the lack of popular litrature and film on the Western Front. God Bless you mate keep on this
Mate I cant wait till the Aussie film industry wakes up & takes notice of REAL talent. The first time I reac the original script I was very moved by the writting.
Good luck mate, the 18th Btn is behind you all the way.
Does this have anything to do with the significance of Villers Bretonneux? If so it would make a great story as Australia has not since had such an impact on world affairs as they did at Villers Bretonneux.
Yes, the climax of this film is the battles around Villers Bretonneux - one in particular. This script also shows the battles of Messines and Passchendaele
Great Job. I respect what you are doing and back you up the whole way. However maybe you would concider producing the movie on film instead of digital, which I am assuming you are using. If you have no film, try using an effect when you are editing it to give it that look. I don't know if you are aware, but in films you'll see at the cinema, there is normally a slight blueness added to the image to give it that particular look. I know how hard this stuff is. sin
Thank you for the nice comment. We only shot this on digital to raise intrest in our script. By no means are we asking to direct the feature ourselves, we just want producers to take a look and maybe want to see the script.
Thankfully after being on here for just two weeks we have had to send the script to two differant producers of well known companies.
I fully support it being shot on film for a big cinema release.
i got this canadian ww1 script written myself. script expert writers approved saying it was very good and it could work, only thing is i am still a couple years too young to get into it. i do not know exactly how much money it will cost to make this movie that i have written down, so can you tell me roughly how much yours costed to make this, so i can have an idea how much money i have to collect for mine.
What a fantastic preview, would love to see the feature length. As I understand, not a lot of films show the Aussies on the front line in France. I feel the 34th Battalion would be an historical wonder that would be be a huge hit world wide. Fantastic. I especially love the last scene - what an awe enpiring shot.
