I remember liking this song as a boy - I even owned the 45. But I was too young to understand it was about a guy coming up with excuses for sleeping around. Now I think I actually like the song even more. ;)
The UnSung on Ray Parker Jr was awesome! Ray was a great guitarist before the Ghostbusters Fame I remember in the 80s. Only African Americans can creatively take a childhood nursery rhyme & soul-erize it, lol.
i would love coming home after a night of hanging out with my fiends (age 14) and staying up late listening to late night am radio and hearing this song...1978 and then i bought the cd in 2006..shit loads of fun!!! great memories...music is the basis of memories!!

disco was THE fad in the 70s and will never be forgotten no matter what remember this song played in wispering hills country club sunday nite in louisville kentucky and the toy tiger on bardstown road great song love it
Well, Ray is fabulous, but like Billy Joel (Uptown Girl/Ravel's Bolero) Ray derived hits from another source (In this case "Jack and Jill" from Sly Stone's "Stand").
And, it is said, his huge it Ghostbusters was derived from Huey Lewis and the News
Ray and the boys hit #8 in Billboard, 4-15-78. Ray can be heard singin' baritone, in the part 'now why do think'. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!
Jack (Jack) Wanting someone to feel (Feel) Sat up on the hill (Hill) And waited all day for Jill Jill (Jill) Always away from home (Home) Never bothering to phone (Phone) Always leavin' poor Jack alone Now, why do you think Jack snuck down the hill (He snuck down the hill) 'Cause he needed love (He needed) Love he couldn't get from Jill (Oh, yes, he did) Why do you think Jack snuck down the hill (He snuck down the hill, yeah) He needed love (Oh, yes, he did) ...
I think this man is very good looking I have liked him for a very long time, I even had to see him again after years passed just to see if I still was attracted to him or if it was just cause I was younger but found out he still excites me......
i was in college when this came out. loved this song and loved to look at ray-gorgeous guy and great musician-thanks soso much for posting this song and video!!!
1978, two yrs out of high school gave up over 10 basketball scholarships to marry my high school sweetheart, everybody called me stupid now just having celebrated our 32nd anniversary and 3 son's(30,26,23)and will be grandparents for the 2nd time may 1st i think i made the right decision, wife and i still put 70's music(even my 8-tracks lol) on weekends and dance half an afternoon away !
@use2slam2 God bless you guys.....love over basketball....not many brothers would even consider doing this kind of act today, lol...takes a real man to spend the life with the lady he loves and reap the benefits years later with a happy marriage, kids and grandkids to boot!! and old school jams to play on the weekends!!!
@use2slam2 I like your comment, but I dont think you had to give up your basketball dream to get married, u coulda done both....im the class of 78 school & i still got 1000 8track tapes..I just bought a 1976 craig (new in the box) player...lol.....Tommy
Pure smooth R&B at its best, adults writing meaningful songs with depth and playing melodies to support. Great group underrated for their time although Ray Parker did enjoy great solo writing and singing career throughout the 80's
Thats one of those good old songs!! loved it!. Brings me back to a time of being young and everything was much different then. We need some soul back in our music today...
it really is the kind of song, that takes us 40-something yr olds, back to the days where there was no gun violence..or crack....or a whole lot of black on black crime. Those days were a lot easier to deal with, even if you came from nothing, and every Saturday, you waited for Soul Train to come on, before you went outside to hit the streets with your buddies. Im "reppin' Washington, DC..and when I was a little guy, I heard this song, almost everyday.
@MisterCrazyLegs i live in wales the uk ,,it was the same here ,,everyone had nothing ,,we just loved to party and dance ,,now even my little town is full of drugs ,,and four murders withing 4 years
@MisterCrazyLegs yes it is ,,but you get to meet some nice people who think alike ,,its the politicians that are fucking this world up ,,anyone whose a millionaire should'nt be allowed to be in any goverment unless their self made millionaires ,,,not the like the fuckers who are born into money ,,what do they know about how poor people live
@xxpiggystardustxx well, some of the self made millionaires are just as oppurunistic and devious as the ones who inherited the money. At the end of the day, millionaires, be them self made or not, have no business doing business on the political landscape. Yes, there have been some 'success stories' with them...but they are the exception, not the rule. Thats why I love music so much. Because its 'color blind' and doesnt alienate the listener, for the most part.
I understand that Ghostbusters was a #1 hit, but that song was kinda overrated to me & Parker's other classics such as ''Jack & Jill'' & ''Let Go'' should've gotten more mainstream respect.
@PopCulture20 - I feel you man - Ray got slighted because of the mass media nonsense - I was just saying that "Ghostbusters" always reminds me of him - Peace...
Yes Raydio was one of the most favored groups out there: Ray Parker is unique in his own way, and you gotta respect, those was such innocent and fun times back, but the music sounds just as good today as it did back then, 8th grade prom, skating, the good hang outs, school mates birthday partys, weekend trips and vacations, those we're good days.
ah, the memories.....the children used to gossip ENDLESSLY about these two..Always wondered why they never showed up for school....guess the RUMORS were true....
For those who don't know anything about this music and made comments. Ray Parker Jr, is not only talented but the group Raydio was an awesome group to this date. Hot 100 and R&B charts while also reaching #11 on the UK singles chart. To say this song is bad means that you have no clue about this type of music. Maybe if we mention that Ray Parker Jr also wrote the theme to "Ghostbuster", maybe that might bring you up to speed. Great song, great decade.
although ray parker jr became the star of the group. it was Jerry Knight that consistantly out sang and out performed him. they both had careers after the band broke up, but Ray became an 80s megastar.
Wow - back in the days. Music was good - the artists had TALENT. Today's music is just plain garbage. Old school funk, disco, rock - just great stuff. It all had nice meaning, nice feeling. Today''s crap is all about killing, getting STD's from as many women as possible and being broke. Sad state of affairs!!
I was just sitting here constructing a crossword puzzle and had the sequence --YD--. Oh, I could have gone with PAYDAY, SNYDER or SPYDER.
But I did a search of the sequence and saw RAYDIO.
I remembered that name but not the record I had. Went to Wikipedia and recognized "Jack and Jill" as the title. Couldn't remember a thing about it as it's been 30 years since I've heard it.
Came here and it started playing. Now I remember why I bought this record all those years ago.

Man - what memories. Going to the Dodger games for two bucks in the summer!!! Damn - why can't today's music be like this? Simple, yet moving, with a deep meaning??? Lord - today's music is just shit.
Oh wow, I haven't heard this song in ages!! I was 8 when it came out, and even at that young age, I could tell it was clever. It wasn't outright "dirty" so me and mom could both listen to it together. Lots of nuances-- not always explicit like most vocalists today.
The song has great chord progressions.
Also, I didn't know any of that info you told us in the description, so thank you for being a historian and not letting these songs slip away.
I remember liking this song as a boy - I even owned the 45. But I was too young to understand it was about a guy coming up with excuses for sleeping around. Now I think I actually like the song even more. ;)

I just bought the 12" single of 'The OTher Woman", and it has this song as the B side called "Jack and Jill '82" credited only to Ray,. not Raydio.
