I was stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson back in the mid-'70's where we had the A-7D Corsair II and the newly-arrived A-10 Thunderbolt II. Didn't have much interest in the A-7 because of the (then) bizarre-looking A-10. The a-7's were already considered "obsolete" at that time, but served for a good number of years thereafter. Then I began to hear stories of severely shot-up birds returning safely to base. It had a reputation for ruggedness that only the A-10 has eclipsed.
Sat in the cockpit of one of these when they were flown by the local Air National Guard around my place... cool plane indeed.
