This song is beautiful and my husband sings it to our four boys hope they realise how lucky they are to listen. Their sister wasn't so lucky R.I.P. BABE LOVE YOU ALWAYS.XXXXX
i have a 27 year son which i sang this to and now a 3 year old son who i sing it to and my auld fella sang it me, ....a great song for dads and granddads if you change the end verse..........
RIP Zachary Michael my darling grandson who died a month ago aged 21 months...we love and miss you our dear sonny boy the angels took you because they needed you but we will always love and miss you our sonny boy xx
@jacquik61 bla bla bla, no one loses a a baby, and comes on YT, and blabs about it, oh and that's bollocks about angels needing him,, anyone who lost a child at that age, would be angry as hell with all and everyone, so i think you are a wanker
@gramophoneshane HMMMMM... NO BODY, I say NOBODY, can possibly lose a 21 month old baby and come on a stupid web site and blab about it, especially after ONE lousy month, A parent, would never get over that, and certainly after syuch a very short period of time, ONE MONTH, feel like going on YT and watching videos.. So I may look like a wanker, but you fucking are a wanker
@redredreds100 It's obvious that you don't know much about human nature. You, who obviously have not gone through the ordeal of losing a grandson, or son, and i do hope you will never see this happening in your life, cannot know in which way people will react to such events. Obviously this grandfather is looking for some consolation, and as older as you get you wil look for it in the past, in things that are familiar to you.
@redredreds100 This is the reason why he looked up this song and made a comment to relieve his grief. The fact that you so lightly call this person a wanker does show that you are a person who is being far from mature, and this very unthoughtful.
@skoumou589 It's not a Victrola, but an HMV 202 re-entant made in UK between 1927 and 1931. It's believed that less than 1000 of this model were produced, with HMV sales records indicating less than 300 were sold in Britain before remaining stocks were sold off in 1931/32 at half price, most of which seem to have been shipped to Australia & New Zealand where electricity was still unavailable in many areas. They're actually a better machine than anything Victor ever produced..
this always seem to be played on the radio when my dad had caught me doing something wrong, again, along with 'Oh Mine Pappa'. I think someone had it in for me LOL. Entertainment, where has it gone?!
This song reminds me of my Grandad. He always sang Al Jolson and I never got bored of it. R.I.P Grandad. Only thing I have of you are memories <3 <3 :'(
the people who wrote this song wrote it as a joke and couldn't even bring themselves to put it in the mailbox, they had a bellboy do it.one of the first songs to sell a million copies.
It seems that the record was played on an old wind up RCA Victrola which just adds a little more to the feeling of days gone bye. If you look at the player lid you can just make out the dog listening to his masters voice.
@Migits196 Actually, RCA Victor did make a couple wind-up portable models after RCA merged with Victor, but electrical reproduction was more their thing so they concerntrated on radio & radio-phono combinations much more.
memories of days gone by when my grandad would come to our house sit me on his lap and sign this song with tears streaming...he loved all Jolson songs but especially this one..thank you for putting it on here..
these old songs, so human so honest so full of love, Oh yeah corny maybe but they are not pretensious, when we grow old we all love em... as smart and sophisticated as we were with the lovely arrogance of youth.
my mum went to se this film and rushed out of the cinema as she had just had my brother die such a dramatic experiance for her and my dad. she could never listen to this song without tears coming even though she died at 89 we could never play this song
I have been reading my Granddad's memoirs, and his favorite song was "Sunny Boy'. He went to see him sing many times while in California. I decided to do a google search to see if I could find any thing about this song and singer and am very glad that it is here on the internet--great voice!
A mi mother le reencanta esta song, le remember old years y le trae bellos recuerdos, con tan solo 10 años, la escucho por primera vez y ahorita tiene 92 años, thanks for this song, enjoy it!!!
I loved the film bio of the three songwriters who wrote this --and they were laughing as to how "sappy" it was --until they saw Jolson singing it in a film--and they were all in tears and applauding!

Ray Henderson joins Buddy De Sylva and Lew Brown to form a successful 1920s musical show writing team. They soon have several hits on Broadway but De Sylva's personal ambition leads to friction as the other two increasingly feel left out of things

Norman Brooks "played" Jolson in this film and he also played Jolson in Woody Allen's film "Zelig." Rather, I think he was just the voice of Jolie, not the whole character thereof.
I actually agree. This 1949 version is no were near as good as the original. It's a shame the original versions were changed for the movie "The Jolson Story", as it takes away from the overall film IMO.
my dad used to sing this to me when i was really lil, changed sonny boy to jessi pearl (my name) i had to find out what the real song was 0.x wow!
