Coal is just fine with me. It is a great source of energy for electricity, along with natural gas, nuclear and existing hydro. Air pollution is way down and could go down even further if we modernize our coal plants. We have a coal supply of a couple hundred years in our country. Nothing to worry about. We need to build more nuclear plants now. Oil is not a factor in electricity production, less than 3% of electricity production and I believe much of that is low-grade waste oil.
Coal is causing people to get sick and die. It is destroying the environment where the power plant is, the coal is mined, and the pollutants it releases are contributing to global warming and acid rain. Radiation near a coal power plant is 100 times as much as that of the radiation around a nuclear power plant. Coal kills.
I don't think coal or natural gas is the solution. The only solution is nuclear. Nothing else is anywhere near as clean or environmental. Nuclear is now cheaper than coal per/kW. We should follow France's lead, generating 80% of our power with nuclear. We can use waste products and natural gas for the rest. I don't know if you know anything about generating power from... Well, poop, do you? And I have a 20$ solar phone charger that works anywhere. Better than a restrictive AC/DC charger =)
Nuclear energy!!! It takes about seven years at least to build a nuclear power plant. OK. I'm all for it. Let's do it.
We have an immediate problem, which should be very clear within five years. Let's start building nuclear power plants. Good! Is that the solution? Absolutely not! Also, uranium will run out also so it is not the long term solution.
There is no long term solution, at present other than for about 50% of the human race to disappear soon.
Go to Yahoo! and search Coal Combustion: Nuclear Resource or Danger and click the first link. it is a gov site. Scroll to threw it or read it. Look at the green text, you will see what i am talking about when you get to it.

That tax-term is actually "accelerated depreciation".

It does indeed function as a type of subsidy. Accelerating the depreciation schedule allows an investor to write-off the value of his investment sooner (than is normally allowed by the IRS) -- thus netting him greater profit.

@lacourb1 "We have an immediate problem"
What is that problem?

"uranium will run out"
When? At today's nuclear-electricity production rates, we have 500 billion years' worth of uranium and thorium.

And we can get a lot from the combustion of coal.

Nothing specifically is going to save the world. What are the available tools:
1. Energy conservation in all forms. Everything else is a short term solution.
2. Coal gasification
3. Wind
4. Ethanol
5. Solar
The short term solution alternative is to get a tent and a bicycle, and hope for the best. That seems to be what Americans are good at - hope.
The long term solution probably is beyond human capabilities.

@lacourb1 "1. Energy conservation in all forms."
Worst option. (It is safer and cleaner to increase energy consumption.)
What about nuclear?

Wind, solar and ethanol don't work.
