@jwebb232 Actually, Rinnosuke appears on original works, like Curiosities of Lotus Asia. There are some canon characters that haven't appeared yet on the games, like Hieda no Akyu, who wrote Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, or Maribel Han and Renko Usami from the Music CD's, to name a few. Every work made by ZUN is canon, and it's not considered a doujin.

@jwebb232 But that doesn't mean he isn't in Gensokyo, as I said, there are characters who didn't appear in the games. Those characters live in Gensokyo as well (or any other location in the Touhou universe), and are as valid as any other character. They're just usually less known.
