  • Does anyone know that there's a silent 'B' at the end of the word Drum? I've been beating skins for 20 years and just figured that out!

Nice work Mr. Fraser, now I can tell my bassist to TCB while I distract the bartender.

  • fun fun!!

  • We love the Gazinkey!!!

  • Thanks for the minute of quiet reflection at the end.

  • No, thank YOU dear Bottom for pointing this out. We'll have our people look into it :-)

  • good post man.good for small gigs with a singer and or a guitar too.perhaps brass of some sort to set the mood.thanks for sharing.

  • If you don´t want a drummer, who will pic you up at home and drive you to the gig (and back home of course)?? I think your Gazinkey can´t.

  • Never mind that, who will come and do my laundry and tuck me in my parent's basement room at night? To hell with music, lets get to the important stuff:)

  • interesting technique, there's no need for a drummer now ,haha

  • and sometimes the drummers dog cant even make it to the gig.

  • You're a trip man! That's fantastic! I saw you and the Brokenjoe boys in Toronto back in December. Definitely worth going to see, folks. I'll be draggin' the boys up to see you soon.

    Andy (bass, of course)

  • very cool

  • genuse

  • 5/5 orange blossom special!

  • Cool idea. I've seen people hit thier hands on their acoustic guitars and step on a drum pedal just to keep time.

  • sexy

  • how great is that!

  • orale

    this shit's tight!

  • Dude! I want one of those!

  • "Sometimes you hit the drummer and he quits the band" haha

  • the phone rings~~it's so funny~~

  • This is Great!

  • This is awesome! My friend sends me all these videos to look at (thank you Glenn)and he sent me this today. I about died when I read your info; I was a huge Jeff Healey fan in the day and even have a couple of the old videos in my playlist. How cool is that? I really love what you are doing with the bass! Thanx for sharing!

  • awesomeeeeee

  • yeahman(H) rastaman

  • stir it up!

  • Alec you are fantastic, I was laughing my ass off watching this!-Cousin Deb

  • Pretty cool!

  • This is great man. At first I though you had slap back delay on . I've seen a few old videos with those cats and their drums on their basses.

  • I'm really impressed. As a bare-bones-type country picker, this is the best way to go to get a smooth percussive sound from a classy bass-mounted snare. Way to go!

  • bravo super merci de votre visite

  • Well, i didn´t read all the comments here, so sorry if someone allready wrote the same like me...

Anyway this style of playing its a nice trick! Congratulations for that..

But as i see, your techique is sounding very simular to the 50´s slappin´style! And for that, you don´t need a brush to get the same effect...

    Greetz: Carbo

  • Your right Carbo, slapping is definitely worth learning but it sounds nothing like the brush.Sometimes a different texture can make a difference to a show or recording. Do it all if you like it I say. The description under MORE explains some of the history of the technique and guys like Ernie Newton the skillful trickster that originated it with Les Paul.Slap your bass not your kids!

  • @Magublican ya!

  • lol. good one. i checked out your band. hell of a job. just think how tight you would be with me on the brushes.

    see ya......

  • Thanks Strandman for getting the joke. If we ever need a drummer I`ll know where to find you but remember though that roots music don`t want no TIGHT. Loose is cool! Muddy Waters drummer Willie "big eyes" Smith taught me that.

    Happy New Year......

  • nice job... why do you hate drummers????lol, they steal your chicks......

  • I don`t hate drummers. I just can`t figure out how much to tip them.

  • I have played music for over 30 years plus but I never seen that. Pretty neat man. You fit right in with us. Do some more. Thanks.

  • pretty sweet

  • That 3/4 Waltz thing was cool.

  • I LOVE IT your one smart Alec. and very funny too. Please Say hey to Al baby Webster from Elbore. I just dig your videos they're Great man keep on rockin' in the free world.

    Elbore James is Jimy Now

  • I like that. I saw you a few times in Montréal with different bands. Bass playing always looks easy with you. Brokenjoe in Montréal soon? Merci Alec.

  • Thats a old style technique, but still cool.

  • It's both funny and sick ... hope you get paid double time ( perhaps compound? )

  • dude. you are a genius!!! i really dig the shirt too :) and the smoke effects during stir it up was hilarious!!

  • Good Job! Contratulations! Really interesting!

  • How 'bout straight "slap bass"?

  • Love it!

  • Do you get a doubling fee with that?

  • I love bass, the instument is so big and powefull, it dosent even need any frets!

  • acustic bass kicks electric basses butt. I prefer to play with a person with an acustic bass.

  • Thats a old style started in Nashville back in the 50s,theres a guy "Superman " on my space he learned it from the old Opry players and has like the original drum and all

  • Your right, as it says in my description. The great Lightning Chance was one who did it. His was a big wooden framed skin fixed to the bass which was screwed in permanently. The left hand would be hindered when going up the neck. Mine is removable, springy and has a mic in it which allows you to get a better tone, balance and less feedback ( this was a problem with a mic on a stand ) and you can dance around a bit if you like. The technique however owes a lot to Nashville. Don`t we all ?

  • I thought Ernie Newton originated this technique rather than Floyd Chance, maybe I'm wrong!

  • I mention Ernie in the description of this video. Can`t say I know who was first.

  • Sorry,I didn't read the description. I guess it's immaterial who started it, both Ernie Newton and Lightning Chance were great bassists in their day.

  • No problem, it was worth bringing up. Add Bob Moore and Joe Zinkan to the list of great 50`s Nashville bassists.

  • I can see the info-mercial now on TV at 2:00 in the morning! You got yourself a million dollar idea there!! Nice easy sound too!

  • Great stuff. what is the Gazinky made of? It looks like a piece of styrofoam, but what is the part that sounds like a snare?

  • It has a condenser mic inside that with some tone adjustment can sound like a brush on a snare. It can also be used as a trigger for midi sounds if need be.

  • Make sure you get one with a round wire end for your pinky to go through. The triangular ends hurt like hell. Also a little gaffer tape where the brush meets the plastic will tighten it up a bit and stop it from bouncing with too many grace notes.

  • How do I make a Gazinkey?

Where do I get the brush?

    Thanks

  • I will make a video on "how to" when I finish my summer touring. It`s not as simple as it looks. Hang in there and thanks............Alec

  • you can buy a brush in almost any music store...

you know...guitar center or something...though they're a little expensive sometimes...

  • Kickass! Sounds great.

  • You make me sit through a minute of black for nothing at all?!!

Oh well... It was worth it. I love the stand up basses, but I don't have enough hand strength built up yet.

  • Hey Alec,

    Very cool!!!

    Stay well.

    db

  • wow, i love it! it keeps it simple and adds some great texture to the bass! awesome, brilliant!

  • That's awesome!

  • brilliant i love it

  • Thanks man ! I'll have more up soon I think ...

    B

  • very cool, I like it!.

  • Very cool Alec ! , you're good on that thing man ! what's that echo is it built into the thing or ...?

  • Thanks man. There is echo only on the intro tune. That is the advantage of sending the signal to the P.A. You can put reverb on slow songs if you like. Hey I just checked out your channel. You guys sound fantastic. I`m subscribing.

  • The extra grace notes on the other tunes are how the tension on the brush is adjusted and how fast you pull back the brush.

  • So whats it made of? how'd you make it? can you use a stick instead? Does it have a snare kind of sound, or more like a pad? (hard to tell from the sound on the video)

I've seen the cable remote kick pedals, - so you could strap the beater on the front or back, and put the pedal anywhere around you on the floor.

-you may want to use some softer cloth/felt beater head or replace the arm with something flexible, so you don't damage the bass.

    anyway....looks good! :)

  • I`m touring a lot right now but will eventually get around to mapping out the details of how to build one, amplify and how to use it. There is enough info to make a few videos like this for such a simple looking thing.

  • Now you should rig up a foot pedal to bonk the back of the bass.

  • Actually I have been thinking about a sideways pedal that would hit the front of the doghouse. That way it would be the kik foot that I`m used to already, I definately have to stop adding at some point or I`ll end up with a cymbal on my head.

  • that's so cool, your t-shirt is amazing too :)

  • Shakespeare gave us Hamlet, Beethoven, his Fifth, now you have given humanity something to remember you by!!! Many aspire to that, few achieve it.

    Congrats

  • Fuckin' awesome!!!!!
