  • Both of my parents worked there for years... I have very fond memories of Service Merchandise :)

  • @jlucydaisuke I remember getting your order back in customer service as it came off the conveyor belt system they had. Think I still have some funky TV trays I bought there. Great memories!!!

  • Its weird that Service Merchandise and all these other old stores that went under have been resurrected as online stores. Its almost like they are ghosts.

  • Anybody remember when they sold guns?

  • Ahhh The gift registry. The little computer just sitting in the store....as a kid I must have entered about 100 different names and sent out advertisements and catalogs to different people. But those people would receive it with names like, "BoogerHead Williams" "JohnCockyHead".........GIMME A BREAK I WAS 9

  • i miss that store

  • never had one in Cali, but it seems like it was a neat store!

  • There was at least 2 in California, one in Newark, one in Hayward and probably all over the state. As they started to decline towards bankruptcy, many of them were closed down.

  • I lived in Bakersfield, which is central Cali!

  • Bill Cosby is wearing the same outfit that he wor on the Jello Pudding Pops Commercial of 1980s (The one about his hands sharing the pudding pop which made people give the wrong idea of blowjobs).

  • I remember My dad getting christmas gifts from service merchandise...good times good times

  • Calling that number you see at the end? You will instead be deferred to another number to meet new people. :(

  • I remember that store well. I went there fairly often and it looked very ornate. I enjoyed going there as a small child and liked to look around while my parents shopped. We bought a lot of furniture there. My birth certificate (I was born in 1992) currently sits in a cabinet that was bought there. My grandfather worked there as his last job (when he was semi-retired).

    RIP Service Merchandise, 1934-2002

    Closed in my area 2001

  • Dude you were born in '92 and youre reminising about this old store. WOW. Service Merchandise reached its peek around the year you were born. I bought my first PC Service Merchandise in Summer of 1993. It was a 486 25mhz, and was considered super fast at the time. We bought a computer desk, book shelf and chair at the same time. By the 1996-1997 they started to cut back on electronics at Service Merchandie, then eventually discontinued the department all together focusing mainly on Jewelry

  • Wow, Service Merchandise closed in my area in the early 1990's. Where it used to stand is now a Best Buy. I forgot about this company until an old ad I saw while I was watching a movie taped on vhs :)
