the guy who invented it says leave the head on, put the ring on, cut the hole, put in the kick port. then use your palm to reseat the head. three minutes tops, and it works.
To all the people who say you don't need to take the head off: I've seen first hand that a bass drum head can split if you try to cut it while it's tensioned on the drum. Not a good idea...
Drops my resonance to 30hz from about 60hz,, absolutely awesome for low tuning, gigs, and studio recording. WOW I mean it.!. Cant believe someone didnt invent this sooner.
the reason you have to offset the hole from the centre is because the way a bass drum works. a bass drum works by air movement and when the centre of the batter head is hit, air causes the resonant head to resonate causing the bass drum sound to be produced. so... basically if you put the hole in the centre of the resonant head, the air will leave the bass drum and the resonant head will hardly resonate. makes the resonant pretty much pointless and you might as well not have one. hope that helps
Sam- Jesse here again from KickPort International.
Great video and thanks!! Everybody here at our company really likes it. We also think very highly of Austin and his fine crew at Poole Percussion and glad you included information about the store in your video.
by the way... We just won a 'Best in Show' award at the Summer NAMM in Nashville last month.
I think I followed the instructions pretty well, but having seen your own YouTube clips I realize that keeping the skin on the drum makes it a quicker and easier job.
I'll leave my vid up in case anyone wants to do it 'the long way'!
Still enjoying using the KickPort. I get lotas of lovely comments about it's sound from audience and sound engineers!
actually i spoke to one of the owners before ordering it and we chatted for almost an hour and he was very pleasant and informative therefore could you be a little more descriptive about your complaint with the customer service
Thanks for the vid, Sam. A couple of tips for anyone watching:
For a couple of quid in most stationers you can buy a pair of compasses with a blade attached instead of a pencil. It's adjustable and gives you a perfect hole every time!
Or simply affix the reinforcing ring first, then cut around the inside (as recommended in Kickport's own literature ;-)
Then fit the Kickport BEFORE putting the head back on your bass drum, hence negating any problems flipping the gasket back into place ;-)
thanks for the video.. i just ordered one after listening to live performance with a drummer who was using it... and it had a phenomenal bass drum sound...
and good job being a true drummer and using your spare beater to put it in.

Or the easy way:
- take the head of
- put on the reinforcement ring and cut the hole
- install the Kickport
- put the head back on
;)

You didn't play the kick before you installed the KP . You only played it after. I wanted to see the difference.

I have it on a Ludwig Centennial Maple 20x22' bass drum and it sounds like a 24' now with none of the 24 inch sloppiness. Love it!

It's a 20. Still sounds good. PA engineers seem to like it too.
