  • @HolisticSam, Hi i am 23 years old and my report says this: Mild disk degenerative noted at L5-s1 level.

Focal disk protrusion at L5-S1 towards left side causing thecal sac compression and moderate left neural foraminal compression.

Disk bulge at L4-L5 causing thecal sac compression and bilateral moderate neural foraminal compression.

What do u suggest me to do ? what excercises should i do?

  • back in 92 i sliped off a porch hit my lower back on corner edge of porch. several years after that certin activites or weather would cause discomfort. this year it has really been bad, going on 2 months .couldnt walk ,move, dress, or any little movement hurt . dr did x rays mri's said ive got degenerative disc dessise two hurniated disc l-4 n l-5 . talking bout surgey i just dont want that pain to come back again. want to go back to work. still have consant pain , but not bad unless i overdo it

  • im pretty sure its not being caused by repressed emotions, i wish that were the answer, this was actually really helpful, thanks, its great that im allergic to pain killers in this situation. .just great

  • Hi Sam,thanks a lot for the video. It was really a good information.I suffered a slip disk at L4/5..So for the cure, is it better to go for sourgen operation or just go for an ortho or physical therapy

  • i have L4-5 and L3-4, its very annoying and the pain has been there for 3 years, but the thing is that it only hurts when i twist my body to the left side Only.... ive tried therapy and anti-inflammatory foods and drugs but nothing works, specially the drugs, once i stop the pain comes back. if anyone has a guess or a cure please help out.... thanks

  • I got a herniated disc L4/L5, extending my back as well as flexing, both hurts. I had a laminectomy nto long ago, and my foot extensors are diminished. When I sneeze and cuff I feel increased pain. What can you recommend Sam?

  • @aroooothen,

Tough one. When working with these types of cases, I go after all the safe "neutral" spine exercises that don't cause pain, and also aggressively work with anti-inflammatory nutrition, and if weight loss is needed, get after it. Check out my DVD set, may help a lot.

  • Hello, I have L5-S1 disc protusion as diagnoised via MRI. My doc advised me to do lots of walking before undertaking any exercise. I request if you can share a video depicting some basic muscle strenthning exercises which any one can do at home or in office.

  • Will I still be able to go to the gym once it heals?

  • 2 years ago i was shoveling a pile of sand i was facing the pile and swining to the left in one fluid motion. about 2/3 of the way threw the movment my torso fell about 2 inchs forword and my lower back gave out it waslike the muscles in my lower back stoped working i could bend forward without pain but i couldent stan back up for the next 3 months i stayed in bed since then i found a guy that helped me build muscles down there and now i can stand up any suggestions on what happened to my spine

  • hi there sam about 2 years ago i was shoveling a pile of sand i was facing the pile and swining to the left in one fluid motion. about 2/3 of the way threw the movment my torso fell about 2 inchs forword and my lower back gave out it waslike the muscles in my lower back stoped working i could bend forward without pain but i couldent stan back up a friend helped me straiten up and drove me home for the next 3 months i stayed in bed never went to a doctor yet and still to this day get pain

  • Hey, sam I have a herniated disc at L4-5. I been to an ortho and physical therapy, but havent seen much progress. I evenutally found a chiropractor that uses the drx 9000. It is my 10th session and im feeling a lot better. I am more mobile now then I was when I first had the disc herniation. But I am not fully heal yet, I still feel minor pain in my hamstring when I walk. Do you think when my disc fully heal It would be the same as it was before? How do I prevent it from happening again? Thanks

  • @Aznboygotric3 ,

Its really all about posture and lifestyle, ergonomics, and of course, having good muscle balance, strength, and flexibility. I suggest the best two resources, Robin Mckenzie's book "7 Steps to A Pain Free Back" and my DVD set for exercise.

  • @Aznboygotric3 im 15 and i hav the same thing right now....i have been getting steroid injections which dont feel to good....but are helping...im also doing physical therapy.....its been messed up for 3 months....it sux cuz it cant do anything and i really wanna skateboard again

  • eating some seafood helps, From my personal experience for some reason I feel much better after eating seafood.

  • hi.. my name is james garcia im from the US im 21 and i have a herniated disc

its been a year now and i havent gotten any treatment i cant go much into detail rather than i wake up in pain every day. But for all those who are out there and are going through this regardless your age.. dont give up, keep fighting, be thankfull that you can stand up everday, dont stop fighting it, im not very religious but god is there for you. Keep fighting it, life is not over till you've given up

  • @asdlkjfdswoi your not religous but god is there for you. well if thats the case ,god has give everyone fucked up spines which is a very horrible thing to do, i would'nt wish it on anybody but god obviously does, its got me thinking, maybe god is the devil in disguise.

  • @asdlkjfdswoi your herniated disc is NOT causing you pain my man. Dr. John Sarno MD is your answer. You have repressed emotions thats causing you real physical pain. Your brain cuts off a little bit of blood supply to your painful areas causing it to hurt. You most likely have "tension myoneural syndrome". go to tmswiki.wetpaint.com to learn more. go to an introduction to TMS. 20/20 did an interview on him and his practice several years ago. 90% success rate.

  • i fucked my back 2 years agodeadlifting/ squatting and got 2 mild herniations. this past winter i screwed it up leg pressing, and im assuming i brought my knees to low to my chest.i keep tryin to work around this when it comes to legs but i keep re-irritating it again and again. most other workouts not involving legs tend to be fine and dont usually bother me as much as legs. anyone have an idea of how long this will take to heal if im careful? its L4-L5 i think. lower back

  • @CRB115

    watch vids on here

    VAX D

  • @CRB115 i fucked mine up deadlifting...did urs heal

  • @rctriplefresh5 my back is alot better than it was, but it still isnt back to normal. disc injuries generally will never heal completely tho. i can do alot of stuff again like running, sports, etc, however i still have to be carefull about picking things up wrong and doing stuff that cud tweak my back. it probably took about 5 months fr my back to tolerate sports and stuff again, but i also didnt rest as much as i should have.

  • Hi thanks for help. I have two lower herniated disc and a further 3rd on it way I am 43 and have had this problem for 2 years now, some days i am ok and other days I am back on my crutches because it is agony to walk, my left leg gives way sometimes as if it has come out of it socket and walking to far puts me in bed for the next day! WilI get better? I have had a cortazone in back but reluctant to do that again because I had the worse headache i have ever had, cheers.Debs

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH SAM! I slipped a disc 6 weeks ago and have been going to the chiro every week. He keeps telling me to lay flat on my back and pull both knees toward my chest & round out my lower back. I tell him that it hurts so much but he says it's good for me. I just started taking MOBIC anti- inflammatory tablets. It's helping a lot. Can I ask which is better, Heat packs or Ice (or both)? & if there are any stretches that you recommend? Thank you so much for posting this vid!!!! 5Stars!!!

  • @StreetLevelStudios ,

This usually depends on the situation, but generally speaking, my opinion is that heat works better in more chronic situations. I cannot recommend stretches, but check the rest of my videos and you will find some very helpful advice.

  • @StreetLevelStudios

Ice reduces joint and muscular swelliing, cuts back on pain and accelerates healing. Quart Size zip lock bags are best for putting the freeze on wound areas, then you allow for your body to regain its normal temperatures before doing anything, usually at least 5 - 10 minutes after using ice.

  • Got a question Sam. I had an MRI done back in Nov which showed that I had a disc protrusion at the L4-L5 and a disc extrusion at the L5-S1. I don't have trouble laying down, its the getting up that is really painful, almost unbearable to the point the first few steps of walking, I have to sit down until pressure is relieved. But, the pain is in my left hip/buttox area. What gives? Thanks

  • @MrJant77 ,

If you are flexing your spine when you get up, that is likely the cause. Disc pain is always worse in the morning because the discs are most hydrated.

  • Sam. Yor talks are fantastic. After 1mnth of inmobility & 7 further mnths of discomfort, I've been diagnosed with L5 disc bulge. I began to think it was with me forever but u have given me hope that it WILL eventually heal.

Re: sleeping. I hav found it better to lay flat, sometimes with my hands in the small of my back to aid support ~ I've never had an arch. (If I lay with pillows under my knees, as suggeted, my back curves which is not good.) Is this ok? ~ I don't want to hinder any healing.

  • @bootsamou,

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. Most of the time, laying on your back is fine, as long as your hip flexors aren't too tight, which causes pain. I'm not concerned much unless a disc bulge is REALLY bad. In this situation, I highly recommend a "Mckenzie night roll".

  • @bootsamou

I know what you feel, but to a lesser extent, i tore some ligaments in my lower back and my l5 is very compressed for some reason. I was an avid weightlifter but this has really taken me out

  • Cured!

I have spent 2 1/2months unable to stand up straight because of L5-S1 disc herniation. All this time I had incredible sciatic pain below the knee. It felt like someone hit my left leg with a bat, litterally, 24/7. A week ago, I was prescribed an anti-inflamatory; diclofenac sodium. After a week of taking it I now stand up straight and the pain is almost all gone!!! I thought medication wasn t needed but if u suffer from a disc injury the inflamation, I now realize, is a huge enemy.

  • how do you know if you really have disc herniation is there a way of testing youre self

  • @MrBigjon89,

There are tests for provoking the pain clinically in order to really find out if its the disc, but I would NOT suggest trying them on your own.

The most common issue with a posterior disc bulge is that flexion forward (rounding the lower back) increases pain, or flexion + rotation to the opposite side of the pain. Most acute disc bulges will radiate pain if pressing on a nerve, so it will be VERY obvious if the disc is the real cause.

  • so if i can press hard on my back without feeling any pain does that mean that im pretty safe also it doenst hurt most of the time and even when it does its more like a minor discomfort rather than pain

  • @MrBigjon89,

That doesn't mean the disc isn't problematic, simply because its not producing pain. Its important to understand where discs are bulging because it tells you where you are putting stress on your spine.

  • thank you very much i can rest easily now

  • Thank you so much for these video you have posted. I personally can't put a price on pain relief.

  • hi Sam,its me again. I have now been in the same condition, without any improvments for 2 months. I cant stand up straight and am living with sciatic pain 24/7. How do I know if am gonna need surgery?... any suggestions?

    worried sick

    tx, Nick

  • I just herniated my disc last night doing squats for my exercise routines (315lbs), and thank GOD for these videos. They give me hope, as I was sooooo stupid and am now paying the price.

  • I've been having problems for over 6 months.

There was one stage I could not move for the pain. Gradually with rest *my GP advised me to lie down for 2 weeks* it improved and then I have been doing gentle excercise. Now, suddenly, it is back and I am in pain again. I cannot stand on my right leg as it feels so weak and the pain shoots through me. Bending hurts, lying on my side hurts, walking hurts etc.

But my doctor does not think it is a problem that cannot be fixed by drugging me on co-codomal

  • WoodlandAsh,

My advice in these situations is to EDUCATE yourself as best you can, so you can make good decisions regarding your back pain. The BEST resource for disc related issues is Robin Mckenzie's book, "7 Steps To A Pain Free Life". I really need to start selling this book with as many recommendations I make to read it! :)

  • WoodlandAsh:

Your doctor should have sent you to a Physical Therapist ... so many times doctors will just try to mask the prob with pain meds. Go back and demand therapy from a specialist so that you can be taught how strengthen your core muscles with hurting yourself.

  • I've given up really.

Most of the GP's i've seen are in a world of their own.

I find that if i do not excercise the problem is exacerbated, so I try to do gentle things such as walking the dog for a mile or more a day and it does help.

However, it's one of those "1 step forward, 2 steps back"

I will have to see someone in time.

    :)

  • Thanks so much for answering Holistic Sam. You re a good man!

    Nick

  • side gliding helps me extending indeed... should I stretch this way then? I ve been "bent over" for a month already with little improvments. How long u think recovery can take Doc???

    Thank you

    Nick

  • Nick,

I'm sure you understand, I cannot recommend anything specific for you. Generally, it can take up to 18 months to completely heal a disc tear, but obviously many people can get pain relief long before that. 3 months is a good amount of time to significant changes in pain levels, but the disc problem isn't gone, just not pressing on the nerve root. Takes a while to heal the structural damage.

  • I cannot walk upright right now. It hurts in the butt and down the leg when i try to stand up. My chiro said it was most likely due to L5 S1 disc herniation. Bending forward is no problem for me, the opposite motion is... why is it and what exercices can i do?

    thank u kindly

    Nick V

  • In posterior disc bulges, bending forward (spinal flexion) would KILL, because the bulge would increase toward the nerve root.

If extension is causing pain its possible to be rotated or side flexed in the spine due to mis-alignment, and thus moving into extension pinches the bulge.

I HIGHLY suggest Robin Mckenzie's book for ALL disc pain patients "7 Steps To A Pain Free Back". You may need to perform Side Gliding motions PRIOR to extensions to get relief.

  • ok what steps should i first take to seek medical attention for a disc bulge?

  • That depends on if its acute or a chronic problem.

  • GO TO YOUR DOCTOR ASAP AND GET AN APPOINTMENT WITH AN ORTHOPEDIST. this is very important to do. alot of times surgery is the best option. i had surgery 7 years ago and then again yesterday for 2 separate discs. trust me this is not something that you can do "holistic" shit on. surgery is inconvenient for about a week afterwards but its same day surgery and you will feel better right away.

  • threadysparrow,

Thanks for your comment, but this is simply not true. It depends on the case and the individual. Surgery is the LAST resort, and I'm glad you felt better, however, based on statistics, overwhelming majority of patients don't feel better or even feel worse after surgery. The diagnosis now for this is "FBSS" Failed Back Surgery Syndrome.

  • @threadysparrow what surgery did you have?

  • I have a lumbar central herniated disc between l 4 and 5. also lumbar spodylolisthesis every way I bend hurts so i have been laying down. Are there any exercises you know of?

  • has ne1 tried this?

  • wow the first logical video i have seen

  • mine is actually herniated anterior. the posterior points are in contact with one another. everything is very painfull.

  • Thank you for this video and what u do... i was diagnosed a herniated L5 disk about a month ago.... i am desperate looking out for safe and the right type of info for me to heal....

  • Great videos Sam - very informative and helpful. I appreciate what your'e doing. Thanks.

  • thank you so much for this...I have a herniated disc and this is very good advice for me thanks...
