Such an underrated single - pointing at Slade's own fanbase in particular - I'm sure almost all were football fans. Fun lyrics, stomping riff, perfectly fitting lyrics, should have been at least a moderate hit. Slade even gave one of their most fun music video performances.
@ajsmith311 Think you make a valid point there. Most reviewers seem to be totally unaware that we were mostly working class kids! Slade appealed to me as a frustrated musician, as I believed it was possible to be successful and be just an ordinary joe working in a factory for bottle tops! I only realized many many years later that there existed a two tier system and Im afraid Slades black country roots did appear to stand against them. Just look at who Bowie hung out with in comparison. sad
The greatest, loudest, fun lovin, rebel rousing, boot stomping, show stopping, hellraising rock band EVER. D ya hear me out there? You cannot play or sing in a band such as this in anything over middle age hence there shall never be a reunion. What Dave does today is not even slightly comparable to what Slade were back then. It was purely music played for the young and not for all the boring old farts that that surrounded them. Bless em and each and every fan everywhere. Cheers lads.
@grumpy1069 i don't care if this gets flagged as spam, but you might wanna give GIUDA from italy a listen. careful though, there's two bands of that name, the one i'm talking about are from rome.
@bourntwyn Hmmm no reason to get uptight about the best pop/rock singer off all time. What do you care about wearing that scarf for one occasion, for me it is all about the music and Slade are my favorite forever!
Happy memories at the Goldstone Ground. It was very cold, I actually played in the football scenes it was filmed at Waterhall in a blizzard, the Slade boys and I shared hot chocolate together to keep warm. Happy days !!!!!
It was, the guys turned up in a stretch Rolls-Royce. The Slade boys were really awesome. Each shoot would only last no more than 10 secs because the camera would get covered in snow in the blizzard conditions. Plus it was too cold to stand around so we would huddle around a hot stove sharing hot chocolate to keep warm.
I managed to get the guys to sign a programme on the day of the match at the Goldstone Ground.....
I'm from Burnley and that's the old Goldstone Ground north stand, Which is actually in Hove. I remember queing to get in and this massive roar went up , when I got in Burnley were 1 up.
I was there. At The Goldstone Ground in The South Stand. Couldn't remember the score or who the opposition were but it was a very cold day in Jan or Feb 78. Those were the days.
I don't know why this song wasn't a hit, especially cos the Brits love football orientated songs. It should definitely be re-recorded by a footy team or the England World Cup next year.
Great Song. This song has just been used to advertise the new FIFA 09 game. The ad is one of the longest I've ever seen, and includes Wayne Rooney.Good 'ole Slade!!
Futbol&Slade a marvelous combination.1978 not was the best year fot Slade, but this song is incredible. Thanks guys for made the best music we can heard.
Funny how scoreless 1970s soccer seems compared to today, that a well known rock band should have to write a song begging for a score line. Awesome. The (soccer) balls back then look like cement bags.
Somehow these guys were huge, I mean bigger than Elvis, in the Pacific coast of SouthAmerica (Colombia Peru Ecuador) Their songs used to be in the "best song of the year"lists, Their albums were being manufactured in those countries. So they didn't make it here in North America, but there is a consolation...
I was at the game when they made this video, like the guy said below it was at the Goldstone ground in Hove, now sadly a retail park. They were trying to get everyone involed, but it was so cold. Happy days memories of the north stand and a great team.
great band, i'll never understand why they didn't make it big over here in north america. i used to get my relatives from scotland a list of slade albums to bring me when they came over.......whatever happened to.....my all time favourite
Yes and fair play to Dave Hill instead of replacing him, he still has Don Powell drumming with Slade. Saw them in August this year, and they were great. Don needs start up drum beat sheets as he often forgets how to start the drum intro for a song. he also has a drum tech beside him on stage.
great vid i was there at the goldstone ground in hove watching this being made in oct 77 just before our game with burnley we won 2.1 and met sladfe and got their autographs afterwards. a day i wont forget
I can't belive Noddy Holder did the 1978 World Cup song for England.
