Wouldn't mind a defender, have a 95 series prado which is good offroad and comfortable on. Tyres and suspension are the key to sand, those Lp tyres at 15psi were amazingly ineffective, who knew! That whole area is amazing, twice this year already & will be back again. Folks met there are great too.
I am 17 and know better than you, I know to try prevent spin as much as possible, when you are in a situation like that, you should be in low range and if the wheels begin to spin, don't accelerate faster, slow your acceleration down a bit, you panicked big time here and cause you to dig in... Just ease it round, dont gun it...
@hawkeyesurfer Did you buy one? It's not unbearable, unstoppable off-road, but really not a sensible city car - huge turning circle, not comfortable plus we had it raised, so it could hardly fit in any underground parking. We loved it then, but now have the new LR4 and there's no way we'd go back.
I own a P38 myself and this kinda broke my heart to watch, I thought it would do much better in the sand. But, you're right... it's the tires. I love this song so I played it over and over.Hey, what the heck... it looks fun trying.(on the sixth try I think)
my god. stop chewing the tracks up, shitheads like you make the tracks at robe such a cunt the drive. 10-15psi and low revs. Your just spinning your wheels and making it worse.
Remember the sign you drove past to get to the beach that said air you tyres down? Do it next time.
i had a water pump lock up there last weekend 8 km from beachport.quick trip to milecent in mates bus an a hour turn around.thank god 4 landcruiser spare parts avalibility.got bogged also but everyone helps everyone.dirt roads an tracks 4 ever.rock on.
You are right, the rangie had low profile road tyres. 15psi didn't help, not enough rubber to sag. the same vehicle later got a set of mud terrains for weekend trips and it was as unstoppable as the Defender.

Is the Defender unbearable on the road?
I want to get one but it will be my daily driver.

Mate! For a start, we're driving the Defender, which had it's tires let down quite low and drove straight off the beach.
As for the RR, it's tyre pressure was also very low, the issue was low profile tyres.
fyi - I for one, don't appreciate language like yours. It's not necessary and generally offensive. Kath.

You really should do a little reading before going on the beach and let down your tyres to 15/q18 psi.
Buy a small compressor to pump them up when you get back off the sand.
Churning up the sand for the people behind you isnt clever

that's why you don't take soccer-mum 4wd's offroad.

I beg to differ. a Rangie with the right tyres can go almost anywhere.
oziandypage 4 years ago
your tyre pressures must have been way too high mate they should have been at about 13psi otherwise your tyre are too small either one cheers.

What size wheels and which tyres did you choose? I have just changed from an unstoppable Defender to a RRS, and need advice.
