  • I made something like this in college, but I had a heat exchanger sandwhich with Peltier coolers. Had the cold side of the peltier on the oil heat exchanger and then had a water cooled hot side of the peltier. Was able to get far below ambient temperature on the oil side.

  • I just shared this on my FB page very cool.... I would love to work with you to make some cool videos on the side...

  • What good is an aquarium without fish???

  • build a aquarium pc case !!!

  • with pumps do you really need a heat-sink?

  • Shut up and take my money, please!

  • Doesn't that mineral oil contain any water in it? The viscosity is very much like that of water

  • @blacksilentA99 If it did the motherboard and other components would short out and fry, yeah it seems like a stupid idea, sticking your motherboard and all into a liquid... but it doesn't hurt the machine at all, in fact it actually helps it be cooler, so it'll work better.

  • you could still use Liquid Cooling as the tubing would be run to the components. Separate radiator and components.

  • what happened to the "you can blow a this, you can blow a that, you can blow with us" song, i miss it from 4 years ago : (

  • My doctor has this computer on his desk, to be honest it looks pretty neat.

  • Also in future projects you could get rid of the fans and use 2 small pumps to blow cold oil from the tank corners on the cpu and gpu heatsink.

    Nice work.

  • how long the fans will last? I'm thinking their lifespan is drastically reduced .

  • @G13Toni actually the fans would last just as long if not longer, because the oil acts like lubricant on the bearings and motor so the extra friction is offset by the extra lubricant

  • This video went viral on Sucre

  • What happens if you want to add more ram or if you wanted to drain the baby oil? What happens to the motherboard and the psu and stuff after the baby oil draining?

  • @blueburn333 It has oil all over it.

  • @blueburn333 nothing

  • So cool.. I want one of these

  • hi everyone? how much this staff all together?

  • there is one major downside to this system....

the Faraday Cage (Metal Case) no longer exists!!!

the Metal case Protects the Sensitive Electronics that are used on the Motherboard and Video cards!

No Metal Case = No Protection!!!

Beware of RF & EM Interference!!!

  • Yeah, try bringing this one to a lan-party. :-P

  • ohhhhh man, this blows my mind. must be cool, but that has got to suck when you want to swap components and resell stuff. i'm sure an attempt at cleaning mineral oil off a mobo would be an absolute BITCHASS.

  • @satisfaction2009eBay but wait, maybe high purity alcohol would do the trick? you'd need a ton though, and it'd have to be coming out of a small pressure washer to really be effective i'd think.

  • i have a question is this able to run 24/7 all the time or will it fry itself over time

  • @lil0UNKnOWN in the 1 version of this computer running battlefiel for 2 weeks made it go really high and the computer shutdown, but didn't fry,but man TWO FUCKIN WEEKS

  • @lil0UNKnOWN sorry bf3* and the 3 version cools better

  • Want.

  • Love the concept, think this is amazing, but maintenance must be a pain in the ass.

  • @jbaker88 not really, you don't need to clean, change the oil, just look at it and smile

  • Taking liquid cooling to a whole new level.

  • I guess two people thought this was water...

  • Now you don't have to move when you get hungry from playing WOW, just throw a corndog into your computer!!! MMMMmmmm deep fried corndogs.

  • hate to have to do an upgrade to this thing

  • I noticed the SSD isn't submerged. Is that by necessity? I can understand the dangers of submerging a HDD, but I would think a SSD would be fine. Am I wrong?

  • @Sealacus HDD's are sealed units so you could submerge them without issue. You should be able to submerse the SSD, too.

  • Isnt Mineral oil Corrosive to electronic components? how do you get around this?

  • doesn't mineral oil catch fire? in that case, fire in a sealed/closed compartment equals an explosion on your face...

please correct me if i'm wrong!!!

  • @diablopiyush Would it catch fire... well yes... if you exceed 400 degrees F. (204.4 C) And if your computer gets that hot... well... you probably have other issues that are important like the burning building all around you. Type "Mineral Oil Flash Point" into your search engine, then look at the MSDS for it for more information.

  • Im seeing a lot of questions asking how noisy it is and unless Ive overlooked it, I dont see a single reply to that. As a few of the other posters have said, the only reason Id go to these lengths to cool a pc this way is to make it quieter than simply using fans, so if this isnt any quieter, or is indeed even more noisy, then it seems like its purely for aesthetics and even that isnt very appealing. Can we get a definitive answer on the volume of noise this beast puts out?

  • It's glorious, but your kit is just too expensive. I started researching oil cooling for a cheap, diy alternative, which I'll probably still do. Good luck!

  • are there any kind of fish that can live in mineral oil? lol

  • wow when i saw the fans i acualy said oh my god out loud and no one was around :)

  • @speedemon574 me too damn lol. seriously, watching any perfectly functioning electronic device submerged in any kind of liquid is slightly terrifying just out of principle, even if you know it won't hurt.

  • Why dont the components get fried?? like their completely soaked????

  • @Markustim0 This liquid is non-conductive.

  • You guys who are commenting about the temperature being 50c and how that's too high, you're missing something. This is 50c ACROSS THE BOARD (no pun). Being that all components are operating at the same temperature, you get much more stability. Also, OC your CPU enough that it jumps 2-3c on air and you would have 0 difference with this type of cooling as all that mass from the oil will dissipate that extra heat.

  • how noisy is it?

  • @supercool97 depends how close the radiator is to you. i'd consider somehow running the oil transfer tube like, a couple dozen feet away, maybe through a wall into another well air conditioned room or something.

seriously, if' you're going to invest $500, might as well go all the way. That's what I would/will do if I ever do something like this. I'd be aiming as close to 0db output as possible.

  • wait a second, without the trouble of condensation, couldn't you effectively run the tubing into a REFRIGERATED radiator? I'd like to see that mod... tube running into a modded kegerator....with the radiator in the freezer right on top of the mini keg..... oh shiiiiii......

  • what's the freezing point of min. oil? i'd find a way of keeping that sucker like 3 deg. above freezing.... for some of the sickest OCs next to LN2.

  • The techno music seems a bit suspicious. How's noisy is it? the only reason to go to all this trouble -- or expense -- is to reduce noise.

  • a few more degrees and its a deep frier

  • Please correct me if I'm wrong.... But 50 C???? for the CPU temp?? All that junk??? and you guys still FAIL EPIC!! 3x!!! 1 Simply Corsair water cooling unit and one 5" fan runs my i7 920 over clocked 3.5 G at 30c and 50c full load..

  • @Jeralddoerr an I7 is hardly 2 Xeons

  • @NudelzX Yes but 50c is 50c and 3.46GHz is 3.46GHz So even if I had 2 I7's the two CPU's running at 3.5 GHz would still be running faster and cooler... with far less garbage Correct?

  • @Jeralddoerr But the I7s don't have the right hardware to run 2. Only xeons can. That piece of hardware is what separates the 3.33 GHZ 6 core I7 from the 3.33 GHZ 6 core Xeon.

  • @Jeralddoerr

My xeons run at half of that temperature with just regular cooling. Seems pointless to get this now. I thought by doing this system, I could bring my servers down to 10C but nvm.

  • How loud is it when it runs?

  • puts some fish in there.

  • Nice except you're using slow ass Radeons for video cards. 1 properly OC'd 580GTX would destroy those. Xfire is for losers.

  • @jkutyna Im sure crossfire feels the same way about you. lol

  • why is the psu fan trying to blow out the top and why can't you have more than 1000 watt psu

  • Dood! Put fishez in ur tank!!!1

  • are the fans on the heatsinks just there to move oil about, or do they add some level of extra cooling?

  • Add LN2 or LHe 4 instead of Oil and Voila......... You can break world records

  • Fuck fuck fuck, Video card is at 90C get the god damn turkey baster!

  • Why cool the power supply? Yes, the power supply will last longer but the oil will heat quicker. Have you ever built a PC where only the mother board and GPU cards were cooled? Are you doing any overclocking?

  • Why not put a filter inline With one of the hoses to the cooler? That way it could filter out any dirt or dust that gets in there.

I'm surprised it needs that big of a cooler. Is it so a bunch of fans can spin slower and make less noise than a few fans spinning a full speed?

  • Would this be good for my second PC build, or is it more challenging than that? Also, how heavy is it with all the oil and everything? I have a glass desk, so I might need to come up with something to support the weight.

  • This is what i call OILcooling.

  • Comment removed

  • i would over-clock the shit out of that thing

  • 15 DEGREES CELSIUS?!?!? OMFG!!! O.o'

  • @pugetsys

So...how might I get a job working for your company?

  • How much noise does this beast make?

  • @zq42black i would imagine just as much as a normal fish tank....but with the added radiator idk

  • i think it would be better if you dropped the air stones and sealed the system the best you could and just kept the radiator for cooling and just increased the oil flow per second...

  • I hope those guys know that Mineral oil is a carcinogen...

  • @ShayneyBhoy Yep, and with the vapors from the heated oil, better not keep it in the bedroom or living room - wonder if synthetic oil would make a difference.

  • Now you only need to put a compressor and have the computer working at -20ºC.

  • Are these normal components or are they specially sealed to be water-proof?

  • @OneMinTuts Normal, oil doesn't conduct electricity so there's no risk short-circuiting the computer.

  • @dfleite13 And is there any maintenance required? Like cleaning the components every month, etc.

  • @OneMinTuts No. Maybe removing the dust off of the radiator sometimes.

  • @OneMinTuts

Why would they be water proof when they aren't using water? Mineral oil doesn't conduct.

  • It is absolutly amazing what you do with all these customs computer, ive seen the one you made 3 years ago and you seems to only go forward by improving constantly. I want one ! Enought said. Hehe good job man.

  • so most components are submerged, just drives are left out? CPU heatsinks, remove the fan? do fans work inside the oil, I imagine they must be completely ineffectual if they do function.

  • @datasiphon

Fan's spin just fine inside, they are not required but work fine.

  • How about if I used liquid cooling coolant? Would that work instead of Mineral oil?

  • Some of the comments on here make me facepalm. This is not water. Water is the arch nemesis of electronics and it kills them. But this, this is mineral oil. Yes, a liquid but plays nicely with electronics and keeps them cool.

  • there are no fish, so no agaqium just a plastic case with oil...

  • how to clean the parts b4 submerg it into oil??using water?

  • @fatjoseph93

No idiot, water kills computer parts. Air dust only. You shouldn't be using old crap for this anyway.

  • It looks like you guys put a lot of money into the hardware this time around. When not demonstrating it's capabilities, what are you doing with this while it's at the office? Is it a server or a gaming rig?

  • @PayPuh Look at the specs, servers dont run crossfire GPU's that fast

  • @WRCMeister Everything BUT that one spec screams server, so pardon me if I ask a simple question. The only gaming I do on my PC is emulation which is hardly graphics intensive.

  • pesa como 150 kg eso jaja

  • Would be nice to have SSD's and put them in the oil

  • Very cool, just need to add a few fishes to the tank!

  • Is there any reason why you wouldn't tether down some bouyant fish to the bottom so the float around in the bubbles and put a pirates chest in this thing. How did you get the idea that you could do this or that it would work?

  • do you still use thermal paste on the CPU heat sink?

  • @MNation69 Yes ! The second the paste is gone from any reason the computer protect its self and shut down. The oil does not replace it. I discovered that by accident when my CPU radiator wasn't put well into place and my paste got washed away slowly by oil untill there was non left. Sorry for my bad english . I'm from Romania !

  • @MNation69 Try cpu lapping, because of the super fine finish, and the oil, there's no need for paste.

  • @Masterofspite You're so wrong ....

  • @dvdrwsor Ohhh, Ok hotshot, If sooo many people including myself have already done cpu AND heat sink lapping and have awesome results, then please explain why it wont work. But before you respond, remember I have an oil pc myself.

  • @MNation69

    Of course not ...

  • Doesn't the oil heat up?

  • Comment removed

  • @davidx3601 Cpt. obvious..

  • Awsome work, but do you really need fans on motherboard and graphics card, while the whole oil is cooled? And does it affect their durability, I believe these fans weren't constructed for a such density?

  • Man, something just isn't right to me about submerging my components in a liquid... :|

  • Do you change oil too? How ofen, if you do.

  • @KrIIklaNe We have another system that has been running for over two years, and we haven't had to change the oil once. Make sure to clean your components before putting them in the oil! Dust and dirt are the main things that cloud up the oil.

  • Excellent build. Just a few questions.

    1) Its looks as if those two CPU coolers are mounted slanted how did you do this?

    2) How much did this all cost

and 3) Where did you get that radiator from, and is that to cool the oil down or just a certain part of the rig?

    Thanks.

  • @halagaten 1) They are Scythe Katana 3 coolers and come that way. 2) The full kit is just under $700, but what you're seeing is nearly $10,000 in computer hardware inside. We wanted to test the most extreme setup we could! 3) We sell the radiator on our website, and yep, it is there to cool the oil. The whole thing would overheat in about 20 minutes if we didn't cool it.

  • Only if you could put real fish in these things. =[

  • Der Hammer!

  • Why don't you guys build a computer inside a Dewar filled with liquid nitrogen? top it off with a cryopump and your good to go. =)

  • @FrankCashio cold bug...gotta stay above -120F...and the cooling has to be stepped from boot to idle. proper ln2 usage unfortunately isn't as simple as dumping it on a pc and driving the temps close to -346F as you can... unless maybe all the PCBs were made with superconducting materials... * EMH INTEL COUGH* ;)

  • @satisfaction2009eBay isnt it just a matter of keeping it cool while the clock speed goes higher and higher?

i thought the only problem is that at around 5ghz you go up to 100 degrese quickly

  • I like how the CPU temperatures are shown while running Furmark, a GPU stress-tester.

  • @iPickPocketed We're running Prime95 at the same time. Furmark is just more fun to look at :)

  • How long have you guys kept this system running? How Does the mineral oil affect the capacitors and other components? Have you guys done Fermi based card testing? Sorry if i am asking many questions but i am very interested in this method of cooling and am considering it for a lower end system but am worried about the long term effects.

  • @abrakis1 We're run a system for 3 years now, with no ill effect. See the "Original" tab at the link in the video details. I'm positive Fermi would be fine, though we've only run dual 5870's in our system. We'll do a Fermi in the next one.

  • @pugetsys toxicity?

  • Are the video cards liquid cooled? If not, wouldn't the fans blow the mineral water out the top?

  • @stino22 The GPU fans don't have enough force for that. They just move the oil around a little bit. We remove the plastic housing on the video cards to help the oil circulate.

  • @pugetsys wouldn't you want to remove the GPU fans altogether? I'd imagine they would be under a lot of unnecessary stress having to move liquid instead of air.

  • wtf no fish

  • really really awesome! i wonder what temps will u get if u remove the heatsink

  • can you even replace computer parts after this?

  • How much does it weight... also I wonder how a GTX 480 will do against heat on that thing.

  • what if you tip it over.

  • @quygia603 It's over four times the weight of a full size PC with half the profile. It won't tip over.

  • OMG...I WANNA SEE ONE IN REAL

  • At first I thought wow that radiator seems excessive... Then I saw an average of 50 degrees Celcius? Is that right? That's really high for such a big radiator and heavy duty cooling system. I would assume mineral oil's thermal transfer rate is quite low then?

  • @xamboozi It seems high at first, but you have to realize that the system draws 820W of power when under load. We built the fastest, hottest PC we could to test the cooling.

  • @xamboozi 50C is typical idle for most laptops and the like, so not that bad

  • Awesome work guys.

  • Realy cool! And a very nice vid!
