For me the Mahavishnu Orchestra peaked with Birds of Fire recordings which had the original band members on that album. This album has some excellent moments, and as a point of interest Jean Luc Ponty was John's first choice for violinist when he started the orchestra. John's McLaughlin's concept and compositions for the Mahavishnu Orchestra will always be considered a daring and remarkable feat in contemporary music. There really is nothing to compare it to.
Innovation + technical brilliance = superior music. Contrast this level of composition with today's standards in popular music: man o man, it makes me wonder what the next era of decomposition will bring. But hey, we had our hay day, and its preserved for posterity. And hopefully, someone will be inspired to take up the banner of Return To Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Elektric Band, etc. and take it to the next level of good taste, technical brilliance and innovation.
I am 52 years old and I used to listen to them in the 70's high and with my headphones man that was great. Now i listen just cause I think there is nothing like McLaughlin's music out there. I have everything John has ever realesed.
The middle part starting at 2:11 is awesome. The whole album is awesome.
I'm 18 now and I'm just exploring this kind of music... And I must say that so far I haven't heard anything more amazing than this. McLaughlin is a genius!
@grazer770 Michael Tilson Thomas was the conductor.......back then the Orchestra was the London Symphony Orchestra. No fake.....all was recorded in studio. The Engineer --is the same who made some of the Beatles records.Geoff Emerick.
I actually downloaded this song the day after you uploaded it back in August, but I forgot to give you a thank you. So thanks!! I love this band. Anyone who appreciates the Mahavishnu Orchestra is awesome in my world.
I also feel blessed to have been around and into it. I am spreading the word and my son can play lots of great fusion stuff like You know You know, Low Lee Tah and a few other great tunes of that era. John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell are his favorites and he is only 13 and has been playing a year and a half!
I feel extremely blessed to have been aware, young and a huge fan of the greatest progressive music of the 20th century during this era. The creative out of box talent and imagination of those times were completely new and unique. And Maha Orch were at the top of the list and their game!

Moved away from home and a freshman in college when this was released. My brain has been "out of the box" musically ever since. Thank you!

Indeed, nothing like John and never will be.
Master of jazz fusion, non-pareil.
