Try the black sharpie fix. Color black sharpie around the proximity hole. that shud fix it :)

I have the same problem, and I followed your instructions, the worked but only when the from part of the shell was on. As soon as I snapped on the back of the shell, the sensor failed to work!

@melinderz0205 that is strange. I wouldn't even know how to begin to help. Some people said a long time ago in the comments that if you use a black sharpie and color the proximity sensor it would work, but i never was willing to do. Maybe if you get a screen protector and color over that and test it and see how it works. just a thought,

No need to do this with the new Defender case for the iPhone 4S. The new case for the 4S has a larger opening for the proximity sensor already built in, Otterbox has recognized this fixes the problem. Just make sure you purchase the 4S version, not the 4.
