  • @Titanhearth Can you post your method for removing it? Was it some sandpaper?

  • I made a fire and stuck my Ka-bar inside of it and the coating bubbled and boke off in no time "Just protect your handle and guard because the black guard mount is plastic and not stacked leather" While the blade is still hot, oil it with olive oil or WD-40 then chip the coating off with another knife or fork or something. Then wash it using an abrasive pad and water for the burn residue, rinse repeat. then polish it to a shine using metal polish and elbow grease or oil and a machine spindle.

  • @sagequan

I heard that's really good for the hardening of the blade.

  • @LRAJ88 yes it does harden it slightly, depending on the temperature and soeed its heated to, as well as the way you cool it weither you use water, ice or oil. But Ka-bars are generally already optimal as-is. The older ones tend to be less brittle but need more sharpening.

And any attempt to harden the blade no matter how slight will also make it more brittle even if you cant detect it, and the blade survives years of use, it will never be as good as it is out of the box.

  • @sagequan

It was more meant as sarcasm. Anything heating the blade above 100 degrees Celsius should be avoided, putting it in a camp fire and then cooling it causes a lot of tension in it too and makes it potentially unsafe to use.

  • @LRAJ88 oh ok, well when you polish a blade like this its more for looks than for practical use. A Ka-bar in general is cheap, easy to use and meant to get beat up, burned up and whatever else you can think of doing. What its not for is bushcraft.

  • dude how to remove black coating on the knife with perfect style like this.. i really love this knife.. did you want to sell to me? at least you tell me how to remove that black coating. thanks.

  • @ripper269 I did the same thing with my KA-BAR. I used Dad's Easy Spray paint stripper, but Jasco stripper works also. Just make sure you wrap the leather handle in a sock or something so that it doesn't get eaten up. I used a nylon brush to remove the stubborn black areas. Repeat as needed.

  • That looks great! Ignore those that don't know how to care for a real knife. So many parrots on youtube just repeat what they hear. My g-pops USN Ka-Bar saw saltwater during training as a WWII frog-man, and is still very serviceable with almost no maintenance for 65yrs. Its top half is dull from my g-mom shucking oysters with it, and it has a nice patina, but I could make it shine like yours tomorrow. BTW, its leather handle is fine too so I laugh when people say those won't hold up well.

  • You posted this vid in 2008, are there any vids of it in 2011? Curious to see how it still looks

  • TitanHearth how old u was when u took this video???

  • good luck with urs any way.

  • if you dont use it and just keep it as a collectabe then it should be fine, otherwise, its gonna get rusty in mere minutes, u wont see it comin. i did the same thing with my ka-bar large heavy bowie and tat was a mistake. just went fishing and came back showered and ate, then am taking my gear out to dry and there it was all rusty and shit. I tried baking soda, batery method, steel wool, as well as clr, drimel tool and took a sanding paper to i but nothing worked. 1095 is a bitch.

  • your fucking stupid, you ruined 80$! you fuck tard!!!

  • @carlyle0229 You might want to start thinking for yourself instead of simply parotiing what other idiots say.

  • Comment removed

  • i agree with ridgebuggy dude that is a sweet kabar, what these guy don't know is that if you know how to mirror polish your knife you probably know how to keep a little rust off. AWESOME KNIFE

  • how did you remove the coating? please reply its really important to me.

  • That is a sexy beast

  • Did you feel stupid while you were twisting your knife around to buttrock for over a minute and a half?

  • Don't listen to these idiots man that is killer. the polish alone helps prevent rust and it keeps resistance down while slicing through anything you cut.besides it's YOUR knife do what YOU want with it.

  • erm....if you wanted a shiny one. why didn't you just get the KA-BAR Next Generation 7?

  • @Rossco139 Uh, cause maybe the Next Gen is 440A steel and he didn't want that.

  • The only thing the teflon coating was for, is to keep light reflection down during night operations. The knife is going to rust with or without the teflon coating. But Like any Good Marine we take care of our stuff.

  • well at least you did a good job. just gotta keep that sucker oiled now

  • I refis

  • Wow people are either stupid or jealous. Teflon coating on knives is a new invention, steel has been around since the 13th century BCE, and I bet steel tools including knives just as long. It requires no more protection from rust than a little cleaning and oiling. His kabar is not ruined at all, it will actually perform slightly better now with less friction, but mostly it just looks really good.

  • Looks much nicer than original. Good job. Its not going to rust cause of course you oil it after it sees action :)

  • dude thats fuckin sick

i might do that to my kabar

  • This, to me, looks pretty weird. But I like it. What did you use to polish the blade.

  • ew...

  • People quit hateing on HIS knife, its like any good sword nowmit just needs a little more care than when it had its coating.

Besides with a polished finish it will have a lower friction coeifficent makeing it easyer to slice and stab.

Btw Titanhearth how is that thing holding up?

  • Just having fun. To all the childish haters F. O. >!<

  • In Rust...

    We TRUST!

  • @NinjaHotPocket Polished steel doesn't rust easily.

  • I am removing the coating on my short Ka-Bar.

  • SHINY!!! lol but i like i think its better with out the teflon

  • What song is playing!?!?!?!?

  • Keep it well oiled......as this is May 2010..what is the condition now bro?

  • I agree; it was coated for reason. Once on the hands, the rust can get into your eyes "if you rub them" well the next day, you have no eye left due to rust. It happened to a friend of mine. Lesson learned.

  • @Gauthor57 ROFL!!!

  • FUCK YOU ASS HOLE HAVE FUN WITH RUST

  • Ka-bar's are not ment to be pretty. They are ment to be cutting, hacking, dismembering, killing tools.... and you turned it into a piece of jewelry.

  • That's wrong. You just practically took Uncle Sam and put a pink skirt on him. You should go die in a hole.

  • @DriftKing1813 You should stop judging matters you know nothing about. I have stripped three carbon steel knives of their coating and NONE HAVE RUSTED. Ever heard of oil?????????????? How 'bout wax???????????????

  • I removed the coating on mine but left the patina underneath. I kinda like it.

  • i dont like the teflon coating removed. yu turned it in to a "pretty" knife. just not the same

  • Shiny for a day, rusty forever.

  • does that affect its performance?

  • @jevanmanny No but it makes you look like a tool so don't do it or you just may be ridiculed.

  • @RuthlessZabusa im not going to

  • @jevanmanny Good and thank you.

  • wow, what do you use to get the powder coat off?

  • why would u do this that knife looks so more badass whith the coating plus as its been mentioned before its gonna rust like hell now high carbon blades such as this rust rly easily unless coated with something thank god you dont work for ka-bar

  • Ka-Bar's coating can be quickly and easily removed with a stripper such as Citri-Strip. You can then either polish (as shown here) or dip the blade in vinegar to create a patina that will resist rust. A thick oil like neatsfoot oil is one of the best oils for 1095 steel. It clings to the blade well and offers excellent protection.

  • id like to take of the coating on one of mine and force a patina on it so it doesnt get the red rust or pits. itd look bad ass. I have 11 so one wouldnt hurt. I'm a Marine by the way.

  • @LedZeppelin13k7 sounds like you know some about these knifes so... i was wondering, what is better? the 1211 or the 1213 (i have the 1211 one)

  • @ajbutch123 theres not really much difference. the 1213 comes with a kydex sheath same blade steel but different handle. personally out of all of them I like the d2 extreme the best cause its so strong.

  • aw man, i thought this video would show the knife cutting the keyboard in half or something.

  • SWEEEET! That'll probably make it a more effective woods tool.

  • no... why would it

  • The cutting performance is increased with the coating removed. It will also go through wood with less friction.

  • the coating doesnt add friction, it takes away friction of anything, as for for performance all it does is take away a protective layer leaving it more vulnerable to corrosion

  • How does polished metal not through wood easier then a coated blade. Just run your fingers across a coatted blade and a satin finish blade.

  • how did you polish it

  • I would put a stainless finish on it or something, because otherwise, it's going to rust. Hard.

  • yawn

  • One thing about 1095 carbon steel: RUST. Kiss your Ka-Bar goodbye. That Teflon was the only thing protecting the blade from rust

  • @HighlandGunn1 oil....

  • @obstgarten07 Yes, I agree oil will keep it from rusting but if it is being used to skin and clean wild game the oil will ruin the meat or if it is being used as a utility knife, the blade will rust to hell very quickly. Oxidization is a mofo. Just a lil dab will do ya

  • @HighlandGunn1 That coating also kept it from reflecting light and giving away your position in covert operations, that blade is ruined.

  • @HighlandGunn1 What a a retard, cant believe he took the coat off. If the asshole wanted eye candy he should have just got a fucking chrome piece of shit.

  • @HighlandGunn1 you have no experience my 1095 rtak ii has never rusted, i took the coating off, and ive used it over and over again, with no oil. for over 6 months now, and its been through rain, snow sleet, fog, humidity, live timber. stop being an couch ninja

  • @Wyndstarthedruid Dude, I'm welder and I work with steel all of the time. I know a thing or two about metals. "Couch Ninja"? You're proof that internet courage is stronger than tequila.

  • @HighlandGunn1 your a welder and you work with steel, please, inform me how that makes you an expert on carbon steel in the field and use in the outdoors.........you`re proof that some people simply cannot resist being an asshat.

  • @Wyndstarthedruid Your question is redundant. If I am a welder and I have a good understanding of metallurgy then that kinda makes me qualified to make my statements. Welding School = knowledge of metals and their reactions to elements. You've no argument. Your petty insults mean nothing since you're an internet tough guy. I wish I knew what made you people who talk shit via internet beat. O, maybe it's because you can't see someone face to face. Therefore you have inspired bravery.

  • @HighlandGunn1 LAUGHING MY FUCKIN ASS OFF, im the internet tough guy, but you throw weak ass insults such as "inspired bravery". again, your making yourself a fool. but ill let the fool talk some more, PLEASE, inform me, how in welding school. you have determined that, against all previous historical evidence and knowledge, that a polished carbon steel blade resists rust because the pores are closed, and that in welding school, u gained field knowledge of carbon steel. if you had field knowledge

  • @HighlandGunn1 (cont.) you wouldnt be saying the things you are saying, they are simply not true, and if it was, the samurai swords that are still around today would have extensive rust and corrosion because they didnt have a teflon finish, do you realize how totally fucking retarded you sound?, but again, let the fool speak, he will make himself a bigger fool. and EVERYONE here can see it. good luck in your life you mental midget

  • @Wyndstarthedruid Besides, you know nothing about me and my experience in the field. Seems you're making blind-fire statements that really add up to nothing. Phrases like that tend to show off your intelligence as something you're lacking

  • @HighlandGunn1 actually, i can infer, from your ridiculous statements, that you have probably ZERO field experience in using and abusing carbon steel, and if you did, you would be saying WOW, thats a GREAT mod, the polish increases slicing and chopping performance, and the polishing will close the pores and make it more resistant to rust than a teflon coating, since teflon wears away with serious field use. im done with your punk ass, you`ve been smashed.

  • @Wyndstarthedruid Like I said, pointless blind-fire statements. If that's the best you've got I would almost feel sorry for you. You STILL have no argument. You're "field expertise" means nothing because for all we know you have none. You seem to be one of those people who adore shiny things rather than practicality. It's pointless to argue with someone who has the "know-how" of a soap dish. Hahaha, "the rest of the knife community": you seem to be the only member of the said community

  • @HighlandGunn1 LOL k, your really a funny guy. YOU have no agrument. but you can talk all the shit you want, my knives are fine, infact, my rtak has been without oil for a month now, with pine sap and water that dried on the blade, whadya know, still no rust. what a fucktarded monkey you are. baaaaahhh sheep, bahhhhh.

  • @Wyndstarthedruid Do you really have nothing better to do in your life than get up on youtube and blast away with half-witted insults to people you know nothing about? It speaks volumes about your intellect. You know nothing about me other than I am a welder. Funny. YOU call me a "sheep", "fucktarded monkey", and various other names obviously because you're insecure about yourself and you feel that when you've lost an argument you must resort to name calling to "justify" your sad feelings.

  • @HighlandGunn1 YOU DID THE SAME THING, BUT YOU REQUIRE 2 POSTS CUZ YOUR 2 FUCKIN STUPID TO DO IT IN ONE. FAIL

  • @Wyndstarthedruid I did the same thing? If you wanted to talk about something, the smartest way to go about it is to not come right off the bat with insults. I don't want to argue anymore. It's pretty much pointless. I don't appreciate any of the insults and I apologize for any of mine that may have affected you personally. I don't know you and you don't know me. Let's just call it even and just move on, please.

  • @Wyndstarthedruid A sad little fellow you have to be to start name calling just because you have a temper tantrum about a knife. Real mature of you, buddy. You could have started off on a response to me based on facts in a reasonable manner rather than telling me (who you know nothing about) that I have "no experience" (which was obviously based on nothing) and call me a "couch monkey".

  • @HighlandGunn1 You two have ruined this video with your childish insults. For your information, Mr. Expert, polishing steel DOES seal the pores, and makes it somewhat more resistant to rust. Check the bolt on most any old Mauser rifle and you'll see an example of this. I haven't even polished my Ka-Bar after removing the coating and there is only an attractive light patina on the blade -- there is absolutely no orange rust.

  • @whitethronebooks When putting a knife that is meant to be a utility knife to practical use, polish is rubbed off and UNSEALS the pores. Therefore letting oxidization do it's job. It'll be fine sitting pretty on a shelf somewhere however. How often do you use a Mauser rifle bolt to set up camp or dress game?

  • @HighlandGunn1 It'll be fine as long as he keeps it lightly oiled. Your are right though it will be harder to keep rust off. With that said there are plenty of blades that are high carbon with no coating that dont rust with proper care.

  • @HighlandGunn1 I guess the thousands of years before teflon was invented and used on steel tools, all the tools in the world were rusty. Come on, use common sense, with proper maintenance this is only a superior blade to one with that horrid caked on teflon. May I just say the obvious? Whats the one part of a teflon coated blade without any teflon and is the most important part? The edge! See, even one with teflon you are still going to be oiling it, other than reflection proofing it is useless.

  • @HighlandGunn1 HAHA, are you fucking stupid? how long has mankind used high carbon steel without Teflon? STFU idiot

  • @wdhmjm i totally agree. And a patina layer on the blade is also protective.

  • @HighlandGunn1 My dad gave me his old USMC Ka-bar recently that was from his grandpa's uncle, who gave it to my gr8 gpa and then he gave it to an old indian friend who redid the handle and sheath who then gave it to my dad's dad who gave it to my dad and now me. It is just some sorta steel allow that is very strong but doesn't have rust protection and it has a touch of ruse an some dirt that im not sure how to clean, would a lemon juice bath help and then use some dish soap for whats left?

  • PIMP

  • Why shine it? if its a Marines it's just gonna get covered in blood anyway.

  • you just ruined a ka-bar....

  • @nesbittxj actually it looks better

  • a kabar was made as a utility/fighting knife not some fancy wall hanger. its made to do a job not look pretty.....

  • @nesbittxj i know ive used mine a fair bit

  • then you SHOULD know that this was a retarded thing to do.....

  • @nesbittxj I know but let the dude enjoy it

  • im not trying to be mean. this dude is probably a badass guy. he obviously knows good knives. :) i just hate to see that knife like that... cheers!

  • @nesbittxj ya i understand i met someone who duracoated a CR Sebenza purple that was stupid

  • It's his knife. He can do with it what he wants. All high carbon knives used to come polished like this ... decades ago.

  • @nesbittxj i have a 1095 rtak 2 that i stripped and polished and it has less rust on it with the high polish than with the shity finish wore off, you fail. and have obviously never used a knife in an outdoor enviroment

  • @Wyndstarthedruid first off your fail. i posted this 9 months ago. ha! its over dumb dumb. i sell knives and go camping frequently. so yes. i have ACTUALLY used a knife outdoors. and without oil constantly they rust. i use my Ontario pilot survival VERY often and my coating is still pretty good and is protecting the blade from rust well. so get your panties out of a bunch and check my thumbs up responses ya dingle berry! have a good day by the way.

  • @nesbittxj your opinion<the rest of the knife community.

  • @Wyndstarthedruid Yes, you FAIL hard. Maybe you'll find the desire in your heart to seek out knowledge rather than spurt emotions about your shiny knives. O, and please stop bragging about your imaginary "field experience". No one cares. You sound like a habitual liar anyway.

  • hammerfall?

  • is this full tang?

  • Yes, its a full tang.

  • thanks alot :)

  • the tang is too thin for much real work, i dont know how its as strong as it is....

  • Damn!

  • How did you do it?

  • agh, why did you do that!!!, if i where you ide duracoat it before use.

  • Amazing My Friend!

  • I didn't know a knife was also supposed to be a mirror... I think that polish is going to be harder to maintain and look worse when marred vs. the original coating. But hey, it's your knife. Enjoy.

  • also dont forget that they had it black for protection of the user from unwanted glare. a sniper wont wind up killing this guy because his knife which he would rather dress up and display is shiny. i might do it to mine....

  • cool knife man

    song is gay

  • I took the coating off my ka-bar aswell, got tired of looking at that worn coating after use. :)

People are too worried about blade rusting. It's going to be fine as long as you don't store it in salt water tanks or something. And even if it rusts a little, the rust can be scratched off.

And sorry about your knife breaking, I think lot of people abuse knives too much. It's a great knife and can withstand heavy use if used properly. Use axe for chopping!

    Peace.

  • Why?

  • Damn thats a hell of a knife!

  • gat damn

  • cann i have it!

  • Nice!!! Good Job Dude, looks like the Blade is chromed!

  • thats gonna make it rust ka-bars ar 1095 corbon steel but u can buy silver ones that have the clear coating that just makes em "shiny"

  • johnnycakes8787: It is written on page 2 of this comments. Among the first posts.

  • how did you remove it?

  • oTHEBLESSEDHELLRIDEo: It is written on page 2 of this comments. Among the first posts.

  • Thanks dude!

  • hey dude can you tell me how you removed the coating I have a few knifes I would like to do that with. RESPECT IF YOU GET BACK TO ME.

  • Machete > Ka-Bar

    :D

  • 2 days for removing black coat, 1 day for polishing. It can be done faster I guess :)

  • how long did this take you to polish?

  • It is "Hammer of Justice" played by HammerFall

  • What is that Song?

  • Tnx. The reason was that I never try to do something like this, so I gave it a try and see what happens :)

  • It's cool looking. Is there any other reason other than looks that o\you took the coating of?

  • in acouple years mine will look like that just from lots of use.

  • Very cool looking knife!

    5 STARS

  • jooishjoo: Thanks dude. Yeah, it was a hard 2 days of working. But the bad thing is that the knife broke . At the tang point :(! It is a nice looking knife, but not very "heavy duty". The steel is good, blade can be very sharp, but the weak spots are: Tang and Guard. They can be easy band or broke! (sorry for my bad english, Iam from EU :)!

  • yea, i think it supposed to be a miltery tatical knife knife and cutting through human is so hard.

it'l snap as it has a lot of carbon in it. still a very nice knife.

  • it's so shiny it looks like one of the commemerative Ka-bars, great job!

  • TK549: Thank you. I used 3 Norton Diamond pastes, made in usa. I dont remember exact types.

  • The blade on that is absolutely beautiful! I'm going to have to get me some of that polishing paste. What exact types did you use?

  • The blade on that is absolutely beautiful! I'm going to have to get me some of that polishing paste. What exact types did you use?

  • MajorSam90: Thanks. Well I used 3 types of wetordry paper to remove the coating. Last one was Imperial Wetordry 2000 paper. That is wery fine paper. It took me all day to remove it off blade :)

Than I used 3 types of diamond polih paste to polish the blade.

I dont have problem with oxidizing at all. When not in use, the blade is allways oiled. There is no sign of any rust.

KoRn0F0all0T0Bs: The reason was that I dont like black coated blades much.

  • Good polishing, better than my polished USMC. On what purpose did you do that?

  • Looks great! How did you go about removing the Teflon coat? and are you having any problems with it oxidizing?
