This was on purpose Bergkamp said it himself in a later interview that he performed this trick with little success during team practices and saw a perfect oppurtunity during the match and that he was surprised to see the ball after the turn. I mean if it wasnt on purpose why would he have turned to the opposite direction...its just so clear.

I was sitting behind the goal when Bergkaamp scored this goal. He later admitted that he did not mean to do what he did. At the time I thought it was an outrageous trick, and I stood and applpauaded him along with a fair few other Newcastle fans. Along with Peter Beardsley Bergkaamp is the best player I've seen.

After I first saw that goal, it took me about 10 replays to work out what he actually did, because the ball goes in such a strange direction and then he goes in the other.
