Trained with Estep and Frenn back in 1980. George was still throwing but had not lifted seriously in nearly 10 years. Have a photo of him squatting 725 as if he was getting out of lounge chair. That easy he even had me spotting.
That 725 was with a skinny belt and some loose crepe bandages, tracks pants and USA T- Shirt.
Also got a chance to Train in Doc Rhodes garage.
Both guys super nice, real credit to the sport.
Thanks for putting that up, some very rare photos there.
Paul Anderson came to our high school and was a speaker at a boys assembly in 1964! A proven all around strongman to say the least............a strongman on the inside as well. He lifted one of our football linemen as a demonstration over his head and I remember the oooohss and aaahss coming from the guys in the gym.
Anello = true grit! His toes must've been in pain lifting with LOAFERS on @ :059!! I remember him in a picture deadlifting w/SANDLES! Those knee-wraps? You'd have a hard time pulling a piano wire out of his keester.
@soseg That was the way Vince was built. They redlighted him a few times because of it. Even when he got his shoulders back he still had that hunch. One of the top two greatest deadlifters ever. rw
Jim Williams did over 700 in front of the 1970 Olympic Team! Williams, Kuc and Anello were greats. All are prolific lifter for anyone's standards and great individuals on all accounts.
What most people today dont even have a clue to is everyone is wearing power suits which make hundreds of pounds difference in the amount they lift go and look and the 100% RAW with a singlet only and the totals arent much different in fact many World records still hold from the old days!! In raw not unlimited and untested. These guys were AWESOME!!

I agree with nezpercenathan, they were freaky strong for their time, but now they couldnt compete. I mean Im 15 and Im deadlifting more than I saw in some of those pictures.
A lot of guys I knew lifting then did, but the amounts they used were really small compared to what some guys in both lifting and bodybuilding use now, or did use, in the case of organizations that now test.
@amarone1956 2175 Total in 220 class. 805 squat, 710 bench 725 deadlift. Im not saying i know a lot. Im saying you know little. Go buy a Men's Health Mag and jerk off in front of a mirror.
what a trip to see john cole with thorebecks gym shirts on. The gym is still open and the same record setters will be in tommorrow morning. Preety cool to look right out my office window where many strong guys have trained. Great video, I , before injuries was a body builder but lifted heavy. I like to see some real weight be pushed like this video. Why is it that 300 pound body builders think they are strong squating 800? Thanks, great video!
Anybody who squats 800 is strong my friend. Gram for gram, the ant will always be stronger than the elephant. Maximally, the elephant is stronger. Just lift and be happy.

Back then steroids were not illegal at all, kind of on par with vitamins and whey protein nowadays kinda... so I'd assume so.
