You are an amazing talent and an amazing teacher. Just wanted you to know how your videos really explain stuff to me and have inspired me to try making my first art journal...It is fun..Thank you.
@wufflemann :) Thank you! I'm so glad you got pushed into the deep end of art journaling, if you haven't yet, head over to artjournaling(dot)ning(dot)com (replace the (dot) with periods...) and check out the site, it's got tons of great Aj info!
@duffandy Work work work work work work My DayJob sucks up my timeeeeeee. I have plans for more but never seem to have the time to edit. I've got a bunch of UStream videos up under the name lessherger
You know, this just inspired me to go impasto on something! LOL I love the thick body acrylics and I have some in my art cave just waiting for me! TFS!
Less, thank you so much for sharing all the great info!! I usually thin my paints out a lot to work in my art journal (not generally a brush-stroke kinda gal), but seeing those textures made me go "Hmmm...that might be something cool to play with".
I wonder if a texture gel will stick as bad as just plain heavy-bodied acrylics (something like Garnet Gel - cuz I happen to have it) - I think I'll have to test that out!
@lunacouer I have some liquatex black lava gel and it is NOT as sticky as gel medium. The matte mediums are not as sticky as the gloss. I've noticed that the gels with sand and stuff are less glossy so perhaps the other mediums would be less sticky. After you finish your experiments update us!
great to see you in YT again Leslie. i've always seen that impasto thing in an art shop before, but never knew what its for. but, now i know...thank you for explaining it Les. btw, love your haircut! TFS ;)
@itsaworkofart I've got a couple of other videos up that are pretty recent :) I did go months without updating. DayJob and all that fun stuff. Thanks about the haircut. I donated my hair to Locks of Love. I'm too gray now to donate anymore so I'm back to my preferred short hair styles! WOOT!
thank you so much I have learned so much about art journaling from watching your videos please keep up the good work there is so much more for me to learn
I loooove me some impasto, I feel it gives a really delicious (weird choice of word, but I honestly can't think of a better one right now) texture to my work - however, like you said it's not really suitable for journals due to the pages sticking, which I think is a pity. ^^; Looks lovely on canvas, though!
@comfortableshoesstud yes of course ;) I have used caulk to paint in altered books for that reason. i love to use it to embed things in and to create dimension (3D appearance with the clear caulk) I have a video of it on my channel. makes great altered book / art journal covers. loving these educational videos you are doing.
@juriaan13 and caulk is far cheaper than gel medium. so for things like art journals and such it is an advantage to use something inexpensive like caulk.
Nice one, Leslie. Y'know that's why I use heavy gesso on my pages instead of spraying primer when I'm going to use spray paint. Because it leaves brush strokes and makes it look more painterly.
@juriaan13 isn't that the same as mixing heavy acrylic gel medium with the paints, J? Then you don't have to try to control that BIG caulk gun and waste the whole tube for one page...
@TheArtisticBiker no you squirt the caulk on a plate or something and mix it up with the paint and use a pallet knife to paint. There's a Australian artist whom does nice work this way.
this was surprisingly helpful! thanks!

@princesspanda01 Keep in mind that in an art journal working in heavy impasto will make the pages stick together.

@TheArtisticBiker caulk comes in small tubes that do not require a big clunky gun. they have a pointed tip to so you can draw with them.
GulfSpr1te 1 year ago
@GulfSpr1te caulking is pretty flexible too so it would flex with the page.

A "better" way of getting a thick paint feeling is mixing caulk with acrylics. They dry fast and are flexible at the end. Good explanation.

@juriaan13 I'd never have thought to use caulking to paint with.
comfortableshoesstud 1 year ago
@juriaan13 which type of caulking do you use? Latex, silicone etc?
comfortableshoesstud 1 year ago
@comfortableshoesstud sillicone, I would gesso the page first though rather thickly because the acid could hurt your page.

@juriaan13 Now that's what I call mixed media LOL I'd have never thought to use caulking, great idea!
