@rhettmckay The Carpenters recorded many Burt Bacharach songs, but they never "What the World Needs Now", unless it is still unreleased. I fell into that myth once, but was proved wrong.
Alfie - one of the hardest songs to sing and Dionne makes it look easy. She can't hit those notes anymore - but hell - no one is as good as they were in their prime so you can't take that from her. Amazing combination, those two.

I had the immense luck to be at one of her concert here in Italy... simply amazing! 2 hour- time concert of great music, with one of the most beautiful voices in the world. When she begin to sing " I know I'll never love this way again" the odience rocked!
@naturaltoby Yes. Burt has said this song and his lovely "Anyone Who Had a Heart" were his faves. The latter song was a very progressive composition for that day...first use of polyrhythms in pop music...check it out, it's lovely :~)
Dionne Warwick is giving a concert in aid of The Hunger Project on January 9th, 2011 at The Apollo Victoria Theatre in London in celebration of World Hunger Day. Empowering People. Ending Hunger. The concert is entitled Dionne Warwick and Friends and will be a wonderful evening in song. For more details please type World Hunger Day into youtube. We hope we can count on your support and look forward to seeing you there. Spread the word by clicking the share or like buttons above. Thank you.
No, Dionne did not miss the lyrics, although "Alfie" does seem truncated. The arrangement was abbreviated for live TV, so certain measures (and lyrics) were cut.
Just got to work with Hal David last month for the 3rd time, in Washington DC.
Bert is a great conductor also, the Tempos are perfect, I just heard him in an interview complaining about the conductors in "Promises promises" on Broadway, and what a control freak he was, now I see where he's coming from.
@alchiby AMEN.. can we all become blind to color and open I hearts to love.. I dislike people of all races on a given day.. but i love all as if they were my brother all days of the week.. I care less about your color... and wonder more about your heart and mind..
Nothing like listening to some of your favorite songs played by the composer. And as far as I'm concerned these can only be done by Dionne, even though others have "tried" to do Alfie.
Michael Jackson was asked during an interview what some of his favorite songs were and the first thing he said was, "I like Burt Bacharach."
@8mycrab He is my favorite as well. My two favorite songs of his is, Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head and Arthurs Theme which he wrote w/ Christopher Cross. Personally, the Michael Cain version of Alfie was waaay better. Something about Cain's sophitication in the whole film impresses me.
Don't forget to give credit to lyricist Hal David, here. David and Bacharach collaborated for years, just a great team. Of course many of these songs were written specifically for the great Ms. Warwick.
@DORSEY12100 nothing either of these geniuses did was average - Bert's melodies have stood the test of time.. and as for singers ..doesn't matter who sings..and yet his lyricist is often forgotten Hal David - best ever !!!! Dionne was perfect. Aretha was great for a couple....but Dionne was the muse that made the music - give it up !!
Where did this come from? Was it a TV special. I noticed she left one verse off of Alfie. That's my favorite song that she sings. She does that way better than even legend, Barbra Streisand. It's Dionne's song and she's told the story many times, that it was recorded by many and she was the only one who had a hit on it. Dionne is a legend. Too bad she smoked, but she is on key now and touring the world. She is just in a much lower key.
After that climax, that was just a gorgeous moment... it makes me cry every time... like almost a moment arises where it sounds like pure heartbreak... I imagine someone saying goodbye to someone and not wanting to and crying!
true . i'm African-American but i was blessed that I didn't get exposed to the racial conflicks of the 60's. Probably because i was born in the late 60's.
Thats good. Its pretty sad what happened then. Who would have thought back then that in less than 60 years they would have an African American president. Go figure.
I wouldn't have believed it even 10 years ago if someone had told me it would happen. The American view of this country has come a LONG way from the turmoil and racism of the 50's and 60's. Blacks,Whites,Indians,Asians -- virtually all races are looking past color and creed and embracing unity. That's what the world needs. A country that fights against itself will always go under. That's what happened to Sadaam Hussein. Of course, you still have the resistant ones still lurking around. Pity!

MKBELL, Black and Springfield charted above Warwick? Only in the United Kingdom! In the USA she was second only to Aretha Franklin as the top charting female of the rock era with 56 Billboard chart hits, 12 of them top 10 as opposed to 4 for Springfield and zero for Black. Warwick had 33 Billboard top 40 hits whereas Springfield only had 10. Black charted one time in the Billboard top 40 and once more in the Billboard top 100. Your statements here are not borne out by the facts.
At the time of this obscure broadcast, the top selling Pop female vocalist was Dionne Warwick. Sadly, her record sales were not properly refectled on the Billboard charts of those times (the 60s) because she was "Negro".
Too often, other white Popf emale artists, namely, Cilla Black and Dusty Springfield would mimic the vocal arrangement as demonstrated by Warwick's original recordings. Both of the white ladies would chart above Warwick's efforts.

It changed, I noticed it since the 80'
I know age affect ones voice, But I think some major change.
Did she have nose surgery ? or an accident to her larynx.
If so it real Mess her voice.
Tks, for posting this Video. First time I seen her in the 60' and that voice was Amazing! then.
