  • Interesting aside - Brett was exactly like Holmes even when cameras were off. He would speak and act as if he were Holmes.

I find that to be a wonderful fact and I only wish that I could have witnessed him... I miss him.

  • Holmes jumping a couch is the thing that stands out here? Really??

  • I love this scene. I'm surprised he didn't fall down.

  • This has to be one of my favorite scenes. Now I want to watch the whole episode! :D

  • Oh Holmes, you crazy man....

  • "No no!" *flies through the air to retrieve Watson*

    Hihii, I just love Holmes/Brett.

  • 1:33-1:44 hahahahaha

    Brett's face is awsome!

  • Exquisiteness to the extreme. Just simply fluid gracefulness.

  • "The fish..."

I repeated it 1000 times, it's awesome how Brett can say a simple word so epic... The fish...... Oh god, Brett is one of your best creations.

  • i love his jacket!

  • I read that jeremy had a file for holmes , the imagined history of holmes from childhood and details about the portrayal, would make a nice book

  • @Dravenswraith You can read some of his back story he created in Jeremy Paul's play _The Secret of Sherlock Holmes_ ... somebody has posted an audio-only recording of Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke portraying the roles in '89! Oh to have a time machine and go back and see them LIVE! Aaah! ;)

  • He's got mad hops, Holmes should have been a basketball player! HE JUST CLEARED A FREAKIN VICTORIAN COUCH!!!!

  • @DINOLOVER6717 he should have been a track runner he could clear the volts without problem.

  • @GlassCtiy Good idea! He really should have, he had the almost right form for that with the way his legs came down on the other side...

  • Best Jeremy Brett moment in this episode: [about Inspector Jones] "He is an absolute imbecile at his profession, but he does have the tenacity of a lobster when he gets his claws into someone!" lol.

  • To the Holmesmobile!

  • One of my favourite scenes. So lovely.

  • holmes jumping over a couch just makes me so happy :D

  • I wonder what episode this is.

  • @zorin85 the red headed league

  • I wonder if that was scripted?

  • My God. The line "you couldn't have come at a better time" caused Jeremy Brett to JUMP A MF-ING COUCH? What a man.

  • HAHAHA!!! I do so love it when he jumps couches. :D Or anything of the sort. And he's so calm about it, like he was walking across the street!

  • I never ever tire of watching Jeremy Brett jumping over that couch. XD <33 I must have watched it a million times. Always will be the best Holmes in my opinion.

  • Goregeous, brilliant Jeremy....

  • Oh, Jeremy Brett...you're so wonderful.

  • Doesn't he leap over it the other way in another episode ?

  • @steveN111333 i think so...several episodes i think

  • "Watson, that is a vveerry loose translation!"

  • The director of Granada said it was one of the reasons they thought Jeremy perfect for the role of Sherlock Holmes '...he can jump over couches...'

    =D

  • I wonder how many takes it took Jeremy to jump that couch.

  • Comment removed

  • haha!! To Sherlock, it was the natural way to get around the couch.

  • I so love David Burke!!! I like him even more than Edward Hardwicke.

And Jeremy Brett is just fantastic!!!

    "But China..."

"The fish" .....that is just brilliant!!!

  • Is there some place where I can find the whole episode?

  • @Dratini999 Yes it's called the Red Headed League, on youtube, a good one

  • Yes, he is the BEST Holmes !!! ;)

  • lol love it

  • I can watch this again and again. And he was 50 (or 51) when he did this! Jeremy Brett was perfection.

  • @RailiShah r u sure??? he looks well i dont know how old buy not that old!

  • @1kissbee He was born in 1933, and they shot this in 1984 or 1983. We could only admire his graceful aging.

  • @1kissbee He was born in 1933, and they shot this in 1984 or 1983. We could only admire his graceful aging.

  • @1kissbee It throws me for a loop too, but it's true, he was in his fifties when he did Sherlock Holmes. To me he looks like an attractive forty-year-old. It's such a contrast to later episodes when his illness and meds caused him to bloat. They started having to make changes to the storylines to accomodate his illness too... it's all very sad.

  • Like the tenth time I watched this, my browser froze and I had a lovely shot of Brett-Holmes suspended in mid-air.

  • is this one of the early ones?

They both (ahem Watson especially Ahem) look very thin compared to the others ive seen.

  • Yeah, this is the Red-Headed League, which is something like the third one they ever did.

  • I could watch him jump forever.

  • that Latin quote reminds me of a famous quote by Zeami, from his treatise on Noh theater: "Hi sureba, hana nari. Hi sezuba, hana naru bekarazu." "If you make it a secret, it's the flower [ie. that which captures the audience's attention]. If you don't make it secret, it cannot be the flower."

    couch-jumping ftw.

  • It's been a while since I saw anything nearly as graceful! Thanks for sharing ^^

  • Did you see the wonderful way his coat fanned out dramatically behind him as he jumped the couch?

  • "Omne ignotum pro magnifico"- All things unknown are (as if) wonderful. Better, Sherlock?

  • alright, fangirls, step away from my holmes! he is indeed a great couch jumper, but he is my couch jumper. so stop looking at him and start looking at watson! he needs some love too!

  • just a quick comment, I also frequently jump couches, fences, chairs, and park benches just because they're there... and also because it makes me feel bad ass... maybe thats why he jumped the couch lols

  • @IIIXBlackxCatXIII

Ah, Watson has Mary to look at him. lol

  • Wow, great couch jumping form, Holmes!

And I love the way he rolls his 'r's. *shudders*

  • there was some sort of "tongue tied" or some other speech condition that actually led to his wonderful diction after they worked on it and he had speech therapy,,,it made his wonderful sound even more wonderful

  • Yeah, it's called a 'rhotacism'. He had an extra flap attached to his tongue and it wasn't surgically removed until he was 17. Pretty epic 'r's for someone who couldn't say them until he was 17.

  • @flameandshadow Take classical latin. Rolling the r's is required, and after a while you begin inserting them in everywhere.

  • Jeremy has the most amazing drawl to his speech. He is perfection in this role.

  • to MusicLuver519: I know, I love how he says "the fish" it's just so cool!

  • wow...that's some flawless couch jumping! Go Jeremy and Holmes!!

  • Oh, I love him.

  • So cool, wish he could have jumped over my couch!

  • Jeremy Brett-- perfect.

  • Yet another 2 minutes and 4 seconds spent in admiration!

  • This is from the episode "The Red Headed League".

  • yay that looks fun! X3

  • Look at that!! He jumps the furniture so smoothly!

  • Watson is so adorable.

  • God, so elegant, controlled, yet athelatic, I ought to practice this at home myself! No doubt this will be my new favorite sport. Not to mention the flowing tail of his coat over the couch, of course!

  • lol i love this so elagent!

  • SUBLIME! This just gets better and better! I never tire of seeing moments like this from Jeremy Brett. He and David Burke were spot on as Holmes & Watson!

  • whee! lol

  • Air Sherlock(lol)

  • He can fly! Lol Jeremy Brett is awesome :)

  • Epic win, right there! XD

  • I'm fairly sure you could call that a majestic jump.

  • Ah, he's the perfect man to play Holmes <3 Fits the character. Oh..but that jumping over the couch thing...PRICELESS! :D

  • he is the perfect holmes

  • LOVE this bit. Priceless.

  • I am so happy to see that 7222 other people love watching Jeremy Brett vault that couch. I only watch up until 8 seconds, and it's so worth it! Then again, I'm sure any girl would say that about getting a head-on view of Jeremy Brett's backside!

  • WATSON THAT IS A VERY LOOSE TRANSLATION

    harsh much?

and yay at the couch jumping :)

  • @gerald01 Well it is loose...

  • @gerald01 No, Watson was translating a more polite version, and Holmes was all, "No, rudeness is awesome."

  • I never get bored of watching him jump that couch! :)

  • me too!

  • haha totally agree

  • I love that crazy man! I laughed at least 5 min the first time I saw this! Perfectly Holmes.

  • It would be very easy to edit this to make it look a certain way. Just crop out everything right after 'shares my love'. Try it! You'll see what I mean.

  • Damn, Holmes got some air time on that jump! I wonder if that was written in or Improv on Bretts part. Loved the Red-headed league story by the way...it's one of the hallmark Holmes cases right up there with "The Speckled Band" in my opinion.

  • Oh, it was an improv on Bretts part (have read this story too many times). Yes i no. And of course The Hounds of Baskerville is another classic.

  • Before Tom Cruise on Opera there was the lovely Holmes. The original couch jumper :)

  • Only with Jeremy it is more of a manly leap... ;)

  • I like the jump..

  • Good old Holmes. You never know what he's going to do next. That's what I love about him.

  • You say's it!!

  • I love Sherlock Holmes! Brett give him wit charm, and grace. While other actors played Holmes as either cold and unfeeling or worst as a lovesick sap Brett nmanaged to keep the character true to the stories and yet put a little of himself in it as well. BRAVO! 5/5

  • I love the look on holmes' face when the fat guy said "there's nothing in it after all" He's so offended!!! LOL. Love HIM, Love Jeremy!! And the line "that's a very loose translation" cracks me up

  • Dr. Watson, "Everything becomes commonplace by explanation"

Holmes, (sounding peeved) "Watson, that is a very loose translation"

Gotta love Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes. Absolutely brilliant.

  • Adorable. I love this episode. JB and DB were the best ever! "I thought, at first, it was something clever, but now I see there's nothing in it after all." Aw! What a meanie. Poor Holmes. Holmes is clever, you mean, red-head! >:( ... :D Thanks for this! (I love the bit after the client tells his story where Watson and Holmes laugh... so cute...)

  • Doesn't Mr Wilson sound a bit effeminate?

Hee hee, I love Brett's Holmes. So charmingly eccentric. .Makes you forgive him for what an ass he can be at times. How Mr Holmes is supposed to be played.

  • This is wonderful! I just love the way he talks! I could listen to him for years!

  • i could too:) *handshakes*

  • Red Headed League, love this! Sofa jumping, and Waton gets the giggles and makes Holmes laugh. LOVELY! More JB & DB please!!

  • "Omne ignotum pro magnifico" - maybe Holmes can understand Latin, but I cannot :) What is he saying here? Holmes doesn't leap over the couch in the story, does he? I don't remember that bit. That said, I cannot imagine any other Holmes leaping over a couch - only Jeremy Brett.

  • omne ignotum pro magnifico: Everything unknown is taken for magnificent.

  • omne ignotum pro magnifico: Everything unknown is taken for magnificent.

  • Brett is superlative. He captured not only Holmes' oft abrasive brilliance but his enthusiasm and vibrance as well. His Holmes inhabited his time and place fully, without the anachronisms and baggage of so many other versions. Baker Street is not shown as some Belgravia mansion but a humble set of rooms he has to share with Watson to make the rent.

  • Still the one and only!

  • a classic moment thanks

  • Brett was Holmes. All others were pretenders. It's too bad he's gone!

  • I saw this about 20 yrs ago.

    Still lovely :)

  • O outrageous and most delightful classic Brett! I love the leap. ;) A close second is the recurring refrain: "Mrs. Hudsonnn! Fetch me a cab!"

  • Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock Holmes , he is a great actor , I love this serial , the first time I hear him in the original version , thanks very much

  • love this episode ggggggreat

  • I ADORE this clip! In fact, I watch it daily. Thanks for posting!
