Weird because that is how it is in Europe. In the US people are completely paranoid about never offending anyone and apparently challenging someone's opinion or calling bullshit on it, no matter how stupid, hateful or plain wrong that opinion may be, seems to be a taboo. I think two people can use the word "respect" and mean two different things. Sometimes I think when people throw the word around they are really appealing for cool-headed discussion, which arguably makes communication easier. But other times people are only trying desperately to prevent others from calling them out on their bullshit. They try to make you look like someone who only wants to cause problems just because you want people to examine their own beliefs.
Ok, I like your videos for the most part, and I somewhat agree with your point that not all people or opinions seem all that respectable. On the other hand, I think that there is a certain level of maturity demonstrated by those who treat others with respect. There are many though that prove themselves to be less respectable than others. I guess, it's not as much of a matter of respecting someone as not treating them with disrespect.
On a completely side-note though, your comments on respecting one's elders simply because they are old and explicitly demand respect reminds me of a skit from an Adam Sandler CD called "Respect" where a child tells his grandfather and his grandfather's friends at the social club about his first day of school. The joke is that they keep using the word "respect" while being very disrespectful of others as well as one another. I'm sure you can find it on Youtube somewhere.

It is natural to want a world that is fair and sane, but fair according to who? Or sane according to what criteria. I get that you are engaged,passionate and clearly willing to speak. I would strongly suggest that even when it is hard you are also willing to listen. Further that you are willing to acknowledge the need for civility. In my opinion showing contempt is an easy way out of not engaging how complex life truly is and it only leads to then the aggregation of power to control others.
maybe if you separate out your emotional reaction from you actual thoughts and arguments you will be able to strongly express your point of you while still showing respect. There is no doubt about it, being a strong but respectful advocate is simply harder and requires more thought and more intellect to engage in. I saw some videos you made on abortion. and while I happen to be narrowly pro-choice, the fact was that you said beware there that you called the piece a bunch elfin worst propaganda, and talked about a lot of stupid coming at you and such. But the piece to bring up some legitimate ways abortion is misused. your passion is great but your unwillingness to hear possible complications with your own POV discredits you to some.
I think it is great you are passionate and have a very definite point of view but you need to ask yourself are you on you tube to persuade or to create a sense of mob group think that agrees with you so others will bend to your point of view. one has utility and will make the world a better place, the other ambition is using an issue and a desire to see change to engage verbally and socially coercive action. respect is all about understanding the limits of free speech and respect. when Civility breaks down the next thing to usually go are the institutions that provide for free expression and obedience to law. Its easy to be young and passionate. when one has young you have not lived the mixed results of your own less than optimal decisions so everything is so obvious. except that life is not really that obvious. It's not just about what people believe. It's also about the things that too many religious people say and do. I believe that Cristina and all those vocally critical of religionists are necessary to help combat the evils of acting on false beliefs with violent and ignorant tendencies.
And btw...I'm aware that religion has brought about bad things in the world....but you could say that about EVERYTHING. Not just religion. Sex has brought about bad things too. So has marriage. So have automobiles. Are these bad things, too? Of course not. Look, anything, when abused, can turn into a bad thing. The same thing goes with religious belief. Religion has done a lot of good for society too. Religion doesn't kill...people do.

It's one thing to attack religion. I don't have a problem with that. But Cristina Rad goes much further in her approach when she starts to attack religious people. I just think that's wrong...ESPECIALLY when she then runs her big mouth on national television going on about how religious belief is used often to justify bigotry...yet she uses her opposition to religion to justify the same bigotry she exercises. She's as bigoted, judgmental and closed-minded as the religious right she criticizes.

However, here in the civilized world, having respect for each individual's right to express an opinion, goes without saying.
