  • Burlington lore- The black and white dog is "Olamidae" who is Amy's. She's the blond woman grooving near the barrels, she once told me that Antelope was written as a result of Fishman hiking to the top of Camels Hump while enjoying a trip....Well he was enjoying it so much he forgot he had a gig that evening. Suddenly he launched himself back down the trail telling his friends that they had to run like an antelope out of control, he later made it to the gig in one piece, I think it was at Hunts.

  • Dio, superlativo.

  • this is every kind of awesome.

  • Trey kinda looks like my teacher from 3rd grade

  • It's even before trey really figured out his guitar tone, before the compression and the hollow body. Very interesting to say the least.

  • vintage. good work @trfrasier

  • There running arround on the barn out of there minds on acid. There sitting to watch phish.

  • @Dmtnredbull It's "they're" as in "they are." it's a contraction. The second one is "their." The third one is again "they're." Sorry, I am the grammar police and you are under arrest.

  • Marco Esquandolas......Been you to have any spike, man?

Love it....one of my favorite Phish jams......between the fuzziness you could see classic Trey facial moves!

I wish I was at that party.

  • why are they all sitting down?!?

  • Does anyone have a time machine? Seriously?

  • @MrGrevy I'm sure you had a great band in 1987......

  • garbage

  • i need a fucking time machine so i can go back and witness this live

  • Damn, did I just see Trey Anastasio turn around to turn up his amp!?

  • Trey looks like meredith from the office

  • 5:52 - Doesn't know what the hell to think about these strange guys.

  • Gordo looks like a caveman. Trey looks like a really homely girl. Yet even at this early stage, they had the absolute belief and focus to work their material no matter what. It worked out very well...

  • EPIC!

  • i wonder if the guys ever listen to one of their own shows. if i played guitar like trey i wouldnt b able to stop listening to myself. id probably b really annoying...haha. awesum vid tho and thanks for getting it on here. i would love to have this vhs haha

  • is that a bearded cactus???

  • Tou call that a 50,000 rig ...the whole bands equipment back then wasn't 50.000

  • MARLEY!

  • HIPPIES!!!!!!!!!

  • 7:07-7:30 What the hell are people doing on the roof??

  • @whatthecello42 being hippies

  • This video is SO grainy, but such a treasure. I swear I saw Bigfoot playing what looked like a bass guitar in there.

  • wow....that's some old school Phish right there!! Loves it. Thank you for sharing...btw what year is this from?

  • @happiestbean 87!!

  • So good to see some super old skool Phish!

  • 2:48-2:51 ish definitely one of treys favorite licks to this date

  • 2:48-2:49 definitely one of treys favorite licks to this date

  • who hears the allman brothers influence at 6:30ish?

  • Don't know why, but this reminds me of REM's Imitation of life video... I guess it's because people appear randomly while the music is playing, it is funny

  • well thanks for the smart ass answer, it would have taken you less time to just type the date and like most phish heads you seem to me one of those people peole who think there poo doesnt stink just like trey

  • WOW, this has go to be the best Antelope ever.

  • Despite their considerable musical talent, they really look like opportunists copying the Grateful Dead as an opportunity. The singer invariably reminds me of Bill Gates- the businessman.

  • @Joeey

Holy shit dude, they should be burned alive for finding a niche and making money by doing what they love. No other musicians on the planet have ever dared make money by performing/recording in the style of musicians that predated them. Unless you count every rap artist who ever sampled from anybody else. Or guys like Jimi Hendrix, the Stones, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughn, or any other musicians who took the songs and techniques of old blues players and turned them into rock albums.

  • @Joeey

You talk such stupid shit about how Phish copied the Grateful Dead, as if The Dead were the first to ever form a jam band. Remember, The Grateful Dead came from an era when this style of music was wildly popular. The Dead just did it better, and had more endurance than anybody else. That's why you think The Dead invented this format of music.

If you want to talk shit, talk shit about those cardboard pop stars like justin beiber who relies on computer software to carry a tune. F U

  • @domco2525 I have a request for you. Look up band "Tim Machine." You might like it. Lyrically it is good. Balls for day and something to say. the drummer and bass player are Soupy Sales's sons.

  • OMG HOW OLD IS THIS??????? and where is it

  • @pickingaround Read the description...

  • @pickingaround look at the description REATRD

  • @LedZeppelin362 really for a wanna be hippie you sure are an asshole.

  • OMG HOW OLD IS THIS???????

  • I love seeing the dudes running on the roof. Also great to remember back when one could see a Phish show and easily count the number of people in the crowd.

  • This video shows just how much of a cool rock & roll band Phish were back in the day. I would suggest Phish Vol. 9 which is from 1989, great live show!

  • I FRIGGIN LOVE THIS BAND ,, THANK YOU PHISH FOR YOUR MANY YEARS OF AMAZING TALENT , PLEASE KEEP IT GOING ANOTHER ALMOST 30 YEARS

  • haha no shortage of dogs walking around

  • Oh wow, I just watched that WHOLE thing. God, I love trey.

  • man partys back than ruled

  • Wow, thanks for this sweet gem.

  • what kinda guitar does trey have?

  • @jesse1291

    Languedoc

  • @jesse1291 In this clip it's a starcaster, which is what the later languedoc was modeled after.

  • @concretejungle80cruz

Wrong, that's a "Time" guitar built in Burlington by Paul Languedoc while he was working for Time Guitars.

  • @douchechillum it's a time? looks like an Ibanez. you learn something new every day.

  • @douchechillum are you 100% positive? I'm not.

  • is that sean white?

  • Amazing, my favorite phish song

  • Dude That's Shaun White singing!!!! Hilarious!! Or maybe that's trey snowboarding?

  • @jwc165 haha posted my comment as soon as i seen it,to funny..

  • this shows that these guys payed their dues and were great from the get go. Even if you don't like Phish, you still have to respect the musicianship.

  • Comment removed

  • dude i would shoot one of yall to have been at this

  • marley marlodown

  • no dogs allowed, no dogs allowed, no dogs allowed in the subway. so climb up the stairs and be on your way, cause there's no dogs allowed in the subway today!

  • phabulous

  • when was this?

  • effortless

  • david bowie @ 7:30ish

  • this is great...

  • sos, fukin phantastic

  • this is back when they knew how to play

  • I remember I ordered tickets for Sugarbush NY, "2 day show". I ordered the tickets, and my dad was mad, I used hid credit card. I finally got to the show, and they had "No tickets for me". I had to buy them again! Trey and Phish are just rip off artists! Over rated to the max. Talented, yet rip off!

  • @benslooking4junk Karma is a bitch.

  • @benslooking4junk maybe pop canceled your tickets,oh well good story now but in this time 50 bucks is well worth 330 hours of jammin high energy amazing lights shows..

  • young marley! awww

  • Actuallllly.......Languedoc didn't work there for long....and the reason Time guitars stopped is because of a fire they had that burned the place down.....Languedoc was more of like an intern there......you can find out more about time guitars here.....

yahoo search time guitars and you will find it

  • i like how the dogs are just running around

  • is that treys first languedoc?

  • @smilesguy42993 I believe that's a Time guitar. Languedoc worked there and IMO, pretty much took a headstock design of theirs for his =D, but I do not believe they make guitars anymore and they're all for his success.

But no, Trey did not use his Languedoc as his primary until 1990. A video on here from February has him playing his first (H-S-H pickup).

  • everyone here is absolutely tripping their tits off. friggin' roof walkers! you kidding me?

  • Gotta love that Ibanez Trey's playing.....and Marley dog playing in the background!! Good ole days!

  • i live in shelburne and i still can't find the ranch. im thinking its shelburne orchards

  • holy fucking shit these people have no fucking clue....

  • yeh.. that's cause they are all way too high..

  • holy fucking shit these people have no fucking clue....

  • always wanted to go to a phish show but never got to when they broke up i was devestated then last year i finnaly got to go to alpine valley for a show it was wicked!

  • You can see Trey's dog Marley in this video!

  • I have never posted a comment on anything but, shit, after watching that, I am Speechless - I was compelled to post this. ?? Anyway. it's just amazing and I can't wait to see what Phish has in store for us over the next 10 years. I purchased JOY and was very happy with it!!!

  • what fantastic vintage footage. trey absolutely shreds.

  • what kind of guitar is trey playing?

  • 5:55-6:24

    orgasm

  • this is a cool video man. end of story.

  • proof that trey's tone comes not from his expensive gear but his own finger tips

  • actually there are some very distinct differences in trey's tone here to trey's tone now. His tone goes through several phases. His style remains the same.

  • @TwilitParade actually the gear here is really good! top jbl speakers, great guitars and such..

  • @TwilitParade appart from his guitars most of his gear is relatively cheap actually. But you are 100% right tone IS in the fingers. Good gear just gives it that extra little bit of something.

  • @TwilitParade

Trey's an amazing guitarist, but he does have a 50,000 dollar rig that allows him to get the best tone in the industry, maybe its 50/50 ;)

  • @TwilitParade I'd hafta' say that his style comes from his fingertips, and influences.. but, you can definately hear a major difference in tone from this vid, til' now. Just an observation..

  • ok.look at this vis in 87 & think of phish in 97. now in 09 you ppl say that phish sucks now and their best yars were 95-98. You ppl are f'ing CARZY!!!!!! think of how much they progressed from 87-97...10 years. it's stupid to think that the same thing wont happen again from 97-09...it's an ever-evolvin process you f'ing morons!!

  • yeah i hate phish phans that go to phish now a days and are just critics. i hate how people dont like now a days phish, any phish is best phish. phish phish phish phish

  • On a face melting scale of 1-10 this get a 420!!

  • @Knoxesdad fag

  • thats marley walkin on the "stage" dude.

  • Good long jam Psych

    Cool real people vibe too

  • The early Trey really reminds of Frank Zappa and a little bit of Duane Allmann and Dicky Betts.

  • wtf dog walking on stage

  • @paulk1997

    Marley!!

  • I thought this was a cover band at first, LOL!!! I like this as it shows how this song has evovled into what it is today. Much like how I love listening to the evolution of the Dead's music, just great to hear the beginnings of awesome music. Peace!

  • this is from Amy's Farm, right?

  • it says "the Ranch" top right

  • Wow. This is the oldest video of them i've ever seen. Trey's hair is crazy! No wonder he doesn't grow it out anymore.

  • Go Ernest go!

  • Very cool to see Phish in the early days, thanks for sharing this!

  • Awesome! You can hear trey's Zappa inspiration back then.

  • wow that looks like fun..Im going to see the boys tomorrow in charlottesville....id trade it in a second to be at this place

  • Wow...for someone who was there and should know better....That guitar is NOT a Kramer....It's a Time Guitars Inc. of Vermont guitar. Languadoc worked there before he made guitars for Trey and Mike.

  • For saying this, you obviously know nothing about music.

  • what kind of Kramer is that?

  • WOW, that's amazing

  • Trey played a kramer. I remember, cause I was at the ranch that day, my 2nd or 3rd show. Rob D. runnin on the roof was an everyday thing. Mar mar and shasta bring back memories. Almost as good as fest 8 LOL

  • god... even in 1987 with only 20 people in a backyard u still got an idiot hippie doing something stupid and deadly like running on a roof. I guess it was kind of inevitable that they would ruin the scene LOL

im jus jokin tho, this videos awesome, seein them in this setting is just a crazy mindfuck lol

  • I love how trey cranks his amp at about 3:30 in the vid... he CRANKS IT!

  • OLD SKOOL

  • man it would be cool to go back in time and show all four of these guys videos from big cypress and say this is what will be happening with you guys in 13 years.

  • actually, this is not the surviving lineup i belive.

  • now this is a great song...even back then

  • thats probably trey's metal guitar when he was into that shit back in the day before he went to his first dead show

  • trey is sounding really really great. and he's a goofy motherfucker in this video

  • I wish I was at that party.

  • wow im really surprised at how good they are in there early days, this really rocks, some of the beginning sounds very dead like too, all in all pretty good stuff

  • im diggin the dog in the beginnin

    and trey at 1:10

  • whoever was working the camera was definitely tripping balls

  • fraggel rock is on youtube?

  • I'm so amazed at how good they are in '87! Its amazing. Its like they've been this good since they started! Truly amazingly talented! Or whatever...

  • what type of guitar is that / how does trey get his tone here? is this before his tube screamer days?

  • Most likely a Time Guitar, where Paul Languedoc worked before going full time as Phish's soundman. It might be the lack of sound quality from the old video but his signal sounds compressed and he might have used his Ross compressor that far back. As far as overdrive goes I'm not sure, his signal sounds pretty clean and he might just be relying on pure tube breakup, if he was using a TS9 you would easily see the bright ass green of it on the ground :)

  • so young!!

  • my home town

  • Gourgous!!

  • pretty humbling...

  • 最高ですね!
